On the eve of the bringing of the Don Icon of the Mother of God to the Volgograd Metropolis, Metropolitan Mercury of Rostov and Novocherkassk also gave an interview to the press service of the Volgograd diocese.

The Bishop spoke about the history of the veneration of the holy image, its special significance for the inhabitants of the Don and the spiritual meaning of the presence of the shrine in other dioceses.

“For me, the Don Icon of the Mother of God and the Most Pure One Herself are the most valuable things that can be in life, as for most believers. At first we tried to treat this holy image with special care, we were afraid to even touch it, but over time we realized something much more important: it is not we who protect the icon, it protects us. Indeed, the Don Icon of the Mother of God is the spiritual Guardian of this region. Tomorrow the holy image will go to the Volgograd Metropolis, where it will stay for almost a month. We are happy to see off the shrine, because we know: the believers of the Volgograd Metropolis are looking forward with love and hope to the opportunity to venerate the Don Icon and offer their prayers before it,” noted Metropolitan Mercury.

Είναι ωραίο που ο μητροπολίτης Μερκούριος είπε ότι δεν εμείς φυλάμε την εικόνα, αλλά εκείνη φυλάει εμάς. Το ίδιο νιώθω κι εγώ με την Παναγία στο σπίτι μου. Ας την υποδεχτούν με πίστη οι άνθρωποι στο Βόλγκογκραντ.

Ja, der Satz, dass nicht wir die Ikone hüten, sondern sie uns, ist wirklich stark. Genau das habe ich auch schon beim Wandern in den Bergen gespürt, wenn man plötzlich merkt, dass die Gottesmutter einen selbst trägt. Hoffentlich kommen viele aus Volgograd und beten vor ihr.

Ja, der Gedanke, dass die Ikone uns trägt und nicht umgekehrt, hat mich auch schon beim Kochen oder im Chor berührt – plötzlich spürt man, dass man selbst gehalten wird. Bei uns in Frankfurt haben wir die Don-Ikone vor ein paar Jahren auch kurz gehabt, und es kamen wirklich viele, die vorher kaum in die Kirche gingen. Hoffentlich wird es in Wolgograd ähnlich.
