Genetic studies of the relics of the blessed Prince Dimitry Donskoy can help to recreate the image of this saint, as well as learn new facts about his relationship, said acting director of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolai Makarov.

– First of all, it is important to check him [Dmitry Donskoy – ed. ] belonging to the Rurikovichs, which we already know from the remains of Dmitry Alexandrovich - the son of Alexander Nevsky. We have reference genetic profiles that can be compared with the genetic profile of Dmitry Ivanovich,” Nikolai Makarov told RIA Novosti.

The representative of the Institute of Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences did not rule out that a genetic study of the remains of the prince will make it possible to learn new facts about kinship about his loved ones, while the scientist urged to wait for the results and “give the floor to geneticists.”

An interesting point is that, as Nikolai Makarov noted, a genetic analysis of the relics of St. Demetrius of Donskoy can provide information about the color of his eyes and hair.

Let us recall that the relics of the holy prince were discovered in July 2026 during restoration work in the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. With the blessing of Patriarch Kirill, several fragments of the relics were placed in arks for veneration...
