The foundation of a horreum was discovered in the Roman Castle of Răcaritranslated

Specialists from the Oltenia Museum have identified, during the research in the Roman Castle of Răcari, the stone foundation of a horreum, a public building from the Roman era used as a warehouse or barn.

The announcement was made by the president of the Dolj County Council, Cosmin Vasile, on his Facebook page.

According to the quoted source, the archaeological discovery brings to light an important part of the history of the places almost 1,800 years ago.

"The discovered traces show that the fire destroyed this essential building for the Roman command which was based near today's Craiova, in Răcari. The horreum was the second most important building after the command and housed the necessary supplies for a Roman garrison: grain, food and fodder for animals", explained Cosmin Vasile.

The President of the County Council pointed out that the massive stone walls and the traces of the fire that marked its end tell a story almost two millennia old and provide new information about the last moments of the fortification, most likely during the Gothic invasions of the 3rd century.

Interesant, horreumul ăsta era practic hambarul principal al garnizoanei, după comandament. Păcat de focul ăla, se vede că a ars tot, probabil în timpul invaziilor gotice din secolul III. O să treacă cineva pe la Muzeul Olteniei să vadă fundația?

Yes, horreumul ăla era al doilea ca importanță după comandament, țineau acolo cereale și nutreț pentru cai. Păcat de incendiul ăla din secolul III, se vede că gotii n-au lăsat nimic în picioare. Aș merge și eu la Muzeul Olteniei să văd fundația de piatră, dacă ajung prin Craiova.

Interesting find at Răcari. Those thick stone foundations and burn marks really bring home how the garrison depended on that horreum for grain and animal feed right up until the Gothic raids hit in the third century. I'd like to see the actual foundation stones next time I'm near the Oltenia Museum.

Too bad about that fire that burned the whole horreum, it's clear from the fire marks they found. The second most important building after the command, with grain and fodder for animals - practically the heart of the garrison at Răcari.
