Ecumenical Patriarch: The renewal of our churches must be accompanied by spiritual renewal (PHOTOS)

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew presided over the blessing and ceremonial reopening of the historic Church of Saint Charalambos in Bebek, Constantinople, on Sunday, September 27, 2026, following its extensive restoration.

The 19th-century church, which has long served as a spiritual center for the local Greek Orthodox community, was completely renovated through the initiative of its Church Committee and a donation from businessman Byron Nicolaides, a member of the Greek Orthodox community originally from Chalcedon.

Addressing the faithful, the Ecumenical Patriarch emphasized that the restoration of a church should serve as an invitation to personal spiritual renewal.

“The church has been renovated; let us also renew ourselves,” he said, drawing a parallel between the restoration of the historic building and the spiritual transformation of believers.

He explained that churches exist to bring people closer to God and encourage them to become living temples of the Holy Spirit.

“The walls have been cleaned, what was damaged has been restored, and the icons shine once again. Let our souls also be cleansed through repentance, let the divine image within us be restored,” he…
