Shirts with white embroidery will be exhibited at the Romanian Peasant Museumtranslated

August 14, 2026 · 1 min read

The "White on White" exhibition will be opened on August 19, from 5:00 p.m., at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant and will present interwar shirts from the collections of Horațiu Silviu Ilea and Ioana Corduneanu.

The opening is organized by Semne Cusute Association and can be visited in Sala Noua Galerie. The exhibited works come from several regions of the country and illustrate embroidery techniques made with white thread on white cloth.

The organizers explain that the shirts' embroideries have been affected by wear, sun and water, and the white can also tell the story of the materials' transformation over time. In some cases, white was chosen as a safe option for decoration. In other cases, it can be what is left after the discoloration of the strands.

"White on White invites us to understand our heritage and tradition from another perspective as well. Beyond rituals, symbols, the expression of identity and status, there is something at least as powerful that we must take into account when we want to understand old shirts: the practical aspects", according to a statement sent on Wednesday by the Sewn Signs Association.

The "White on White" exhibition will be open to the public from August 20 to September 13, from Wednesday...

It's interesting how the sun and water change these old threads. In Tula, our grandmother also had such embroidered shirts, white on white, but they quickly faded from washing. It’s a pity that I won’t be able to go to Bucharest to see it, but the idea of the exhibition is good.
