Abuse prevention, liturgy central to Vatican courses for new bishops

September 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The Vatican is hosting its annual formation course for newly appointed bishops from Sept. 2-10, bringing together 147 prelates from five continents to strengthen ecclesial communion and provide practical tools for the exercise of episcopal ministry.

The program has been a fixture of the Church calendar since 2000, when it was launched by St. John Paul II. I hope the focus on preventing abuse will be very practical, especially with all these new bishops from Africa and Asia. In our schools here in Beirut, we notice how much priests need clear training on this subject. Was anything mentioned about how to apply these tools in small parishes?

Good program, especially that they put prevention of abuse at the center. In our Yaroslavl diocese, a couple of years ago, we also held similar meetings for priests, but more and more on paper. I wonder if these 147 bishops from Africa and Asia were given any ready-made document templates or instructions that could be immediately implemented in small parishes, as Mirna asks.
