My grandmother used to bake apple pies on this day and distribute them to the soup. How is it that such traditions are still preserved in our area? And we really knew the sign about Anna’s plank - after her, the summer began to spin like sand.

My grandmother on my mom's side used to bake apple pies on Anna's day too and give them away, exactly like Elena's бабуся. We still do it sometimes in our little garden here in San Francisco when the early apples come in. Never noticed the rain sign working the same way though — our summers are pretty dry anyway.

My grandma on my dad's side always baked extra apple pies on St. Anna's day and sent them over to the church kitchen for the widows. We still do a couple every July, though our New York apples usually aren't ready till August. Do you use a particular kind in your San Francisco garden?
