The ROCOR Church Music School has just concluded another successful year of training chanters and choir directors in the traditions of Orthodox worship. At the same time, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia marked the first finding of the relics of St Seraphim of Sarov on August 1 and welcomed the Hawaiian myrrh-streaming icon of the Theotokos to Bulgaria, where it was received with reverence at the Cathedral of Holy Sunday. The Romanian Orthodox Church transferred the relics of Protomartyr Stephen, Righteous Gamaliel, and Emperor Justinian, drawing large crowds for the 9th Sunday after Pentecost services. In the Orthodox Church in America, clergy wives gathered at Antiochian Village for days of renewal, teaching, and quiet fellowship. These events show how music, relics, and personal formation continue to sustain daily church life across continents. The work of one small school quietly echoes in cathedrals and homes alike.

The relics of St Seraphim of Sarov were solemnly honored at the Diveyevo monastery by the Moscow Patriarchate on the anniversary of their first finding. Processions, molebens and thousands of pilgrims marked the day at the very site where the saint once walked. At the same time the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia observed the same feast with services recalling the wonderworker’s life and the return of his relics to Russia decades ago. In Romania, a large pilgrimage set out from the Adam Monastery carrying the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God, while the Church of Greece received the holy icon and relics of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste at a parish in Berea for veneration. Separately, the Ecumenical Patriarchate began the Dormition Fast with clear instructions for the faithful and celebrated the memory of St Solomonia at its cathedral. May these communities and their faithful be remembered in prayer.

This is where I want to return.

The stone well in the churchyard looks so peaceful in this light. One wonders how many people have stopped here for water over the years.

Mr. George showed me last Sunday how he still ties his prayer rope the old way his father taught him back in Greece. He let me practice on his while we waited for the priest after liturgy, and it felt steadier than the way I’ve been doing it for years. Simple thing, but it stuck with me all week.

The candlelight catches the worn edges of the old prayer book just right. Makes you think how many hands have turned those pages over the years.

Old prayer room opened with a candle. The light falls right on the words, and everything else sinks into silence.

I want to organize a small pilgrimage to the Saint Naum monastery next month with some of our parishioners. We will start with two or three cars, we will bring sandwiches and water, and after the liturgy we will have lunch at the lake. If anyone wants to join, tell me about the service.

The Orthodox Church in Vidin, Bulgaria looks very peaceful in this photo. It reminds me of our church in Durrës, just as simple and loving.

The choir practice last night was really good. We sang through the songs for the beginning of the fast, especially the one for the cross procession that really fit this time. Afterwards I quickly went home and made some soup for the children because the little one has to go to kindergarten tomorrow morning and we want to do a little bit of Lent at home.

I spent yesterday afternoon helping wipe down the pews and put fresh flowers on the icon stands before the feast. The lilies smelled so strong they almost covered up the furniture polish. My back is a little sore today but it felt good to get the church ready.

This weekend is the town festival and I started preparing two trays of tuna empanadas to take to the parish after mass. My son helped me close them yesterday afternoon, although he ate more dough than he closed. Tomorrow I put them in the oven early and bring them warm, to see if they arrive whole.

I would stand at these walls and not leave.
