On the birthday of the God-loving maiden A.I.V.... her 24th year of life, I give this little book as a gift to her, so that the Mother of God may have strong intercession on her. Many sinners I. Macarius. This book was written by the sinful hieromonk Macarius in 1820, while in the Virgin Plogtsap desert, and he wrote it for 11 months. Having moved to the Vvedenskaya Optina Hermitage in 1834, I used it as much as possible, and when I went to the monastery and wanted to find salvation in spirit, my daughters, the maiden A.I.V. and the maiden A.N.G., my dear niece, then I gave them this book to both of them for spiritual benefit and as a sign of their inseparable love, peace and harmony in the Lord. Nil Sorsky This little book teaches spiritual work, which is corrected more by humility, which attracts God’s help. I bless this little book to nun M - e, so that by learning from it and struggling with passions, you may become last and least of all, and receive peace and the Kingdom of Heaven, according to the word of the Lord: blessed are the poor in spirit, for of them is the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 5:3). 9. On the book of St. Barsanuphius (written by the elder himself) Due to my diligent disposition and desire to have this book for spiritual benefit about the Lord to sisters nuns A-ii and Ma-e, I bless it to them. On the Ladder (written by nuns) This book is St. John Climacus in the Russian translation, compiled and corrected from various translations of this book available in the Optina Desert: the first main translation, which was more adhered to as reliably accurate, by the Moldavian elder Paisius, handwritten Slavic; the second is an old printed Slavic with the addition of words: existence and interpretation (printed in Moscow in 1646), the third is a printed semi-Slavic translated in 1794, the fourth is Makariy, Archimandrite Volkhovsky, written Russian (Archimandrite Makariy was a missionary in the Altai mission, then the rector of the Volkhov Monastery, died in 1847), and the fifth is printed in Russian translation, published by the Moscow Theological Academy in 1851. All of them were carefully examined and compared and, to the best of our understanding, the present translation was corrected through the works of the Optina monastery of monk I-ya (formerly John Polovtsov) with the brethren helping him in Christ, completed in 1852. 10 At the end of the book, comments and interpretations on some matters are taken directly from the book by Fr. Archimandrite Macarius. An alphabetical index of the Optina Hermitage was compiled for the same book by hieromonks Macarius and Ambrose in 1854, for the glory of God glorified in the Holy Trinity and for the benefit of those who read and listen to this inspired book. And if there is any mistake, then we humbly ask those who worked in this matter to forgive our feeble-mindedness and unintentional sin.
