I. Christ the firstborn is the wisdom of God, and by Him all things were created In the Proverbs of Solomon: “The Lord has made me the beginning of my ways, my works; Before the age was the foundation of me, in the beginning, before I could create the earth, and before I could make the abyss, before I could become a source of water, before the mountains could be raised, and before all the hills He gave birth to me. The Lord created the countries and the uninhabited and the ends of the inhabited places under heaven. Whenever you prepare the sky, you run with it; and when he cast away his throne to the winds, and when he was strong, making the clouds above, and when he established the fountains of the heavenly places as strong... and when he was strong, he created the foundations of the earth, who built with him. And when you rejoiced over her, you rejoiced every day before Him for all time, having finished the whole world with joy” (Prov. 8:22-31). Also in the book of Wisdom of Sirach 2: “I breathed out from the mouth of the Most High and covered the earth like darkness. I am seated on high, and my throne is in a pillar of cloud; the circle of heaven is one and the same in the depths of the abyss, the wave of the sea and the whole earth and all the people and the tongue of money-grubbers... and has taken root in the glorified people... Come to me, you who desire me” (Sir.24:3-6, 13, 21). Also in Psalm 88: “And I will make him the firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. I will keep my mercy for him forever and my covenant will be faithful to him; And I will place his seed for ever and ever... If his sons forsake my law, and do not walk in my destinies; If they defile my excuses and do not keep my commandments, I will visit them with the rod of iniquity and the stripes of their iniquity, but I will not destroy my mercy from them” (Ps. 89:28-34). In the Gospel of John, the Lord says: “Behold, there is an eternal life, that they may know Thee the one true God, and Him that Jesus Christ sent. I have glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do; and now you, Father, have glorified me with your own glory, since before you had peace there was no peace” (John 17:3-5). Also Paul in the Epistle to the Colossians: “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; ... the firstborn from the dead, so that he may be preeminent in all things” (Col. 1:15, 18). And in the Apocalypse: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end; I will give to the thirsty the living food of the fountain of water” (Rev. 21:6). That He is the wisdom and power of God, Paul speaks of this in the First Epistle to the Corinthians: “For now both Judah ask for a sign, and the Greeks seek wisdom; But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews, and foolishness to Greeks, but to those who are called Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Cor. 1:22-24). II. It was proclaimed by those who were sent for this purpose that Christ is the wisdom of God - also about the mystery of His incarnation, suffering, cup, altar and apostles In the Proverbs of Solomon: “Wisdom built herself a house and set up seven pillars, slain her sacrificial offering and mixed her wine in her cup and prepared her meal. He sent his servants, convening with a high sermon to the cup, saying: whoever is mad, let him turn away to me; and to those who require intelligence, he says: Come, eat my bread and drink the wine that I have dissolved for you; forsake foolishness... and seek understanding and correct understanding in knowledge” (Prov. 9:1-6). III. That the same Christ is the Word of God In Psalm 44: “My heart will vomit out good words; I will speak my deeds to the king” (Ps. 44:2). Also in Psalm 32: “By the word of the Lord the heavens were established, and by the Spirit of His mouth all their strength” (Ps. 32:6). In Isaiah: “For the Lord perfects the word and cuts it with righteousness, just as the word is cut in all the world” (Is. 10:23). And again in Psalm 106: “I sent my word and healed” (Ps. 106:20). Also in the Gospel of John: “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was to God, and God was the Word. From time immemorial with God, all that was, and without Him was nothing as it was. In that life is, and life is the light of man, and the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not comprehend it” (John 1:1-5). And in the Apocalypse: “And I saw the heavens opened, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it was faithful and true, just and warlike: and he was clothed in a robe of scarlet blood. And his name is called the Word of God” (Rev. 19:11, 13). IV. That the same Christ is the hand and arm of God In Isaiah: “The hand of the Lord cannot save food? or have your ears become too hard to hear? But your sins separate you and God, and sin for your sake, turn away its face from you, so as not to have mercy. For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers are full of sins, but your mouth has spoken iniquity and your tongue has taught unrighteousness; no one speaks the truth, below is the true judgment; They trust in vain things and speak in vain, for they conceive labor and give birth to iniquity” (Is. 59:1-4). He says: “Lord, who believes our hearing? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?” (Isa.53:1) And he also says: “Thus says the Lord: heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool; What house will you build for Me, and what place of My resting place? “My hand has done all these things” (Is. 66:1-2). Also in Isaiah: “Lord, Your arm is high, and knowing it not, they will be put to shame” (Is. 26:11). “And the Lord will open His holy arm before all nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation that comes from our God” (Is. 52:10). Again from him: “Behold, I created you like the wheels of a new chariot, wiping out like a saw, and you demolished the mountains and thinned out the hills and laid down like dust, and brought it out, and the wind took me away, and I scattered the storm. But you rejoice in the saints of Israel, and the poor and the poor will rejoice. They will look for water and there will be no water, their tongue is dry from thirst. I am the Lord God, I will hear them, the God of Israel, and I will not leave them; But I will open rivers on the mountains, and springs in the midst of the fields; I will make the desert into meadows of water, and the thirsty land into streams of water; I will place in the dry land cedar and pine trees and myrrhsine and cypress and poplar, so that they may see and understand and think and see together that the hand of the Lord has created all this, and the Holy One of Israel has shown it” (Is. 41:15-20). V. That Christ is the same Angel and God In the book of Genesis it is said to Abraham: “And the angel of the Lord called from heaven and said: Abraham, Abraham; he says: behold, az. And he said: do not lay your hand on the youth, but do something to him; Now I know that you feared God and did not spare your beloved son for My sake” (Gen. 22:11-12). The same book says to Jacob: “And the angel of God spoke to me in a dream... I am God, who appeared to you in the place of God, where you anointed the pillar there and promised me there the vow” (Gen. 31:11, 13). Also in the book of Exodus: “God led them in the day with a pillar of cloud, and showed them the way by night with a pillar of fire” (Ex. 13:21). And below: “The Angel of God will go before the army of the children of Israel” (Ex. 14:19). And again in the same book of Exodus: “Behold, I will send My angel before you, that He may keep you on the way, as He will bring you into the land that is prepared for you. Listen to yourself and listen to Him and do not disobey Him, for you will not be offended; for My name is upon Him” (Ex. 23:20–21). That is why the Lord says in the Gospel: “I came in the name of My Father, and you did not accept Me; If another comes in his own name, him you will receive” (John 5:43). Also in Psalm 117: “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Ps. 118:26). And in Malachi: “My covenant was with him of life and peace, and I gave him the fear of fearing me, and from the presence of my name he would be afraid; the law of truth was not in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his mouth; Correct the world, come with me and convert many from unrighteousness. As long as the lips of the priest retain their understanding, they will require the law from his mouth; as the Angel of the Lord Almighty is” ( Mal. 2:5–7 ). In the book of Genesis: “God spoke to Jacob: Go up to the place of Bethel and live there, and build there an altar to the God who appeared to you when you fled from the presence of your brother Esau” (Gen. 35:1). In Isaiah: “This is what the Lord of hosts says: Egypt has become weary and the purchases of Ethiopia, and high men of Shebaim will come to you, and they will be your slaves, and they will follow you, bound by hand... and they will worship you and pray in you, for there is God in you - unless you have God; For you are God and do not know, God of Israel’s Savior. All who resist him will be ashamed and put to shame and will go away in the cold” (Is. 45:14-16). He says: “A voice crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord; make right the paths of our God. Every wilderness will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be humbled, and all the rough will be right and the sharp will be smooth on its way. And the glory of the Lord will appear, and all flesh will see the salvation of God, for the Lord is the Lord” (Isaiah 40:3–5). Also from Baruch: “This God is ours, nothing will be counted against him; having invented every way of cunning, and given it to Jacob his servant, and to Israel his beloved, therefore he appeared on earth and lived among men” (Bar.3:36-38). In Zechariah, God says: “And they will pass through the narrow sea and smite the waves of the sea, and all the depths of the river will dry up, and all the insults of the Assyrians will be taken away, and the scepter of Egypt will be taken away; And I will strengthen them in the Lord God, and in His name they will praise, says the Lord” (Zechariah 10:11-12). And in Hosea the Lord says: “I will not do according to My wrath, I will not leave Ephraim to consume; I am already God, and not a man; He is holy in you, and I will not go into the city” (Hosea 11:9). Also in Psalm 44: “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom; Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore for the sake of Thy anointing, O God, Thy God is more than Thy partaker with the oil of joy” (Ps. 44:7-8). In Psalm 45: “Be silent and understand that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth” (Ps. 45:11). And in Psalm 81: “Unknowingly, without understanding, they walk in darkness” (Ps. 82:5). In Psalm 67: “Sing praises to God, sing praises to His name; make a way for him who ascended into the west, the Lord is his name” (Ps. 67:5). And in the Gospel of John: “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was to God, and God was the Word” (John 1:1). In the same Gospel, the Lord says to Thomas: “Bring your finger to this and see in my hands: ... and do not be unfaithful, but faithful. And Thomas answered and said to Him: My Lord and my God. Jesus said to him: Because when you saw Me, you believed; who have not seen blessedness and yet have believed” (John 20:27–29). Also Paul in the Epistle to the Romans: “I prayed that I myself should be separated from Christ according to my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, whose sonship and glory, and covenants and law, and ministry and promises, are of their fathers, and of whom is Christ according to the flesh, who is blessed above all God forever” (Rom. 9: 3-5). Also in the Apocalypse: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end; I will give to the thirsty animal from the source of water. He who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be my son” (Rev. 21:6–7). Even in Psalm 81: “God is in the company of gods, but in the midst the gods will judge” (Ps. 82:1). And below: “I am God of nature and the sons of the Most High; But you, like men, are dying” (Ps. 82:6–7). If the righteous and those who obey the commandments of God can be called gods; then is not Christ, the Son of God, much more God? So He himself says in the Gospel of John: “Is it not written in your law: I am God, I am God? If these are the words of the gods, then the word of God comes to them, and the scripture cannot be discredited; His Father, holy and sent into the world, you say, as if you were speaking blasphemy, you have already said, I am the Son of God. Unless I do the works of my Father, do not have faith; “Even if I do this, even if you do not believe Me, believe in My work, so that you may understand and believe that the Father is in Me, and I am in Him” (John 10:34–38). The same is in the Gospel of Matthew: “And they will call His name Immanuel, which is what we say: God is with us” (Matthew 1:23). VII. That Christ God, who came, is the Enlightener and Savior of the human race In Isaiah: “Be strong, weak hands and weakened knees, take comfort in your cowardly mind, be strong, do not be afraid; Behold, God our judgment rewards and will reward, he will come and save us. Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will hear. Then the lame will leap like a tree, and the tongue of the destroyers will be clear, like the waters of the desert and the wilds of a thirsty land” (Is. 35:3-6). “Not an intercessor, a lower angel, but the Lord Himself saved them, loved them dearly, and spared them, Himself delivered them” (Is. 63:9). He says: “I the Lord God has called you in righteousness, and I will hold your hand and strengthen you, and give you for the covenant of the race of Israel, for the light of the tongues, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out those who are bound in chains and from the prison house and those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord God, this is My name; I will not give My glory to anyone else, who is lower than My virtues and graven images” (Is. 42:6-8). Also in Psalm 24: “Tell me Your ways, O Lord, and teach me Your paths; guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God and my Savior” (Ps. 24:4-5). Why does the Lord say in the Gospel of John: “I am the light of the world; If you walk on Me, you will not have to walk in darkness, but will have living light” (John 8:12). Also in the Gospel of Matthew, the Angel Gabriel says to Joseph: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to receive Miriam your wife, for that which is born in her of the Spirit is Holy; and she will give birth to a son and call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20-21). And in the Gospel of Luke: “Zechariah... was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying: Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and brought deliverance to His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David” (Luke 1:67–69). In the same Gospel, the Angel says to the shepherds: “Behold, I bring you good news... that this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, is born to you in the city of David” (Luke 2:10–11). VIII. That the Son of God, although He was from the beginning, still had to be born according to the flesh In Psalm 2: The Lord spoke to Me: “Thou art my son, this day I have given birth to Thee. Ask of Me and I will give You the tongues of Your inheritance and Your possession the ends of the earth” (Ps. 2:7-8). Also in the Gospel of Luke: “And when Elizabeth heard Mary kissing, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and cried with a great voice and said: Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And where do I get this from, so that the Mother of my Lord may come to me?” (Luke 1:41–43). Also in Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians: “And when the end of the year was come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman” (Gal. 4:4). And in the First Epistle of John: “every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not from God; and this one is the Antichrist” (1 John 4:2–3). IX. That the sign of His birth will be that a man and a God, a son of man and a son of God, will be born from the Virgin. In Isaiah: “And the Lord said unto Ahaz, O river: ask thyself a sign from the Lord thy God, in depth or in height. And Ahaz said: Ask not, lest I tempt the Lord. And he said: Do you hear, O house of David: food is not enough for you to give as a man, and how much labor do you give to the Lord? 3 For this reason the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and you will call his name Immanuel: you will eat oil and honey, before you know whether he will do evil or choose good” (Is. 7:10-15). God predicted that from the wife would come a seed that would erase the head of the serpent - in the book of Genesis: “And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this, cursed are you from all cattle and from all the beasts of the earth; You will walk on your belly, and you will carry away the earth all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He will keep your head, and you will keep his heel” (Gen. 3:14–15). X. That Christ will be man and God in order for Him to be a mediator between us and the Father In Jeremiah: “There is a man, and who can know Him?” (Jer.17:9). Also in the book of Numbers: “a star will rise from Jacob, and a man will arise from Israel” (Num. 24:17). And a little higher: “A man will come forth from his seed, and will have many languages, and his kingdom will be exalted greater than Gog, and his kingdom will increase. God brought him out of Egypt, like the glory of the unicorn; The enemy will girdle their tongues and exhaust their calves and shoot the enemy with his arrows. He lay down like a lion and like a skiman; who will stir Him up? Bless those who bless you, and curses those who curse you” (Numbers 24:7-9). Also in Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for the sake of anointing me, to bring good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to preach release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to call the year of the Lord pleasant and the day of recompense” (Is. 61:1-2). And therefore, in the Gospel of Luke, the Angel Gabriel speaks to Mary: “And the Angel answered and said to Her: The Holy Spirit will come upon You and the power of the Most High will overshadow You; In the same way, the holy thing that is to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). Also in Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians: “The first man is from the earth with a ring; the second man is the Lord from heaven. Jacob is the ringed, so are the rings; and yakov is heavenly, and tats are also heavenly; And as we have put on the image of earth, let us also be clothed in the image of heaven” (1 Cor. 15:47-49). XI. That He had to be born in the flesh from the seed of David In the Second Book of Samuel: “And the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, Go and speak to my servant David. This saith the Lord: Thou hast not built a house for Me to dwell in... And it shall come to pass, when thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, such as shall be from thy womb, and I will prepare his kingdom; he will build a house for my name, and I will rule his throne forever. I will be his Father, and Mi will be his son; ... and his house and his kingdom will be faithful forever before Me” (2 Samuel 7:4–5, 7:12–14, 16). Also in Isaiah: “And a rod shall come out of the root of Jesse, and a flower shall spring up from its root; and the Spirit of God will rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and godliness, the Spirit of the fear of God will fill Him” (Is. 11:1-3). And in Psalm 131: “The Lord swears to David in truth, and it will not be rejected: I will plant the fruit of your womb on your throne” (Ps. 131:11). The same is in the Gospel of Luke: “And the Angel said to Her: Do not be afraid Miriam, for you have found grace with God. And behold, you conceived in your womb and gave birth to a son, and you called His name Jesus. This one will be great, and he will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of His father David, and he will reign in the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:30-33). In the Apocalypse: “And I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne, a book written inside and outside, sealed with the seventh seal. And I saw a strong Angel preaching with a great voice: who is worthy to open the book and loose its seals? And no one else can open a book, neither in heaven nor on earth, nor below the earth, nor to see it below. And I cried a lot, because not a single one was found worthy to open and read the book, below the eyes. And one of the elder’s words was: don’t cry; Behold, the lion who is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome, to open the book and loose its seven seals” (Rev. 5:1–5). XII. That He will be born in Bethlehem In Micah: “And you in Bethlehem, the house of Ephrath, had little food to eat among the thousands of Judah? From you, for me, an Elder will come forth, who will become a prince in Israel; he has come forth from the beginning from the days of the world” (Mic. 5:2). Also in the Gospel of Matthew: “Now Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, and behold, a wolf came from the east to Jerusalem, saying: Where is the King of the Jews who has been born? For we saw His star in the east and when we came to our feet we worshiped Him” (Matthew 2:1–2). XIII. That at His first coming He will appear humiliated In Isaiah: “Lord, who believes our hearing? and to whom has the arm of the Lord revealed itself? He proclaimed that he was born before him, like a root in a thirsty land; there is no form of Him, lower than glory, and we have seen Him and not in the name of form, nor kindness, but His form is dishonorable, belittled more than all the sons of men, a man in the ulcer and knowing to endure illness, as if he had turned away His face, he was dishonorable and not imputed. We bear this sin and suffer for us, and we impute His being in labor and in ulcers (from God) and in bitterness. The same ulcer was for our sins and tormented for our iniquities; the punishment of our peace is upon Him; by His striping we are healed. All like sheep have gone astray; man has gone astray from his path, and the Lord gave up His sin for our sakes. And he who is already embittered does not open His mouth” (Is. 53:1-7). From the same prophet: “I do not resist, nor oppose the verb; I put My capes on the wounds and My cheeks on the blows, but I did not turn My face away from the cold of spitting, and the Lord the Lord was My helper” (Is. 50:5-7). He says: “He will not cry... His voice will be heard outside. He will not erase the broken reeds and will not quench the smoking flax, but will bring forth judgment in truth. He will shine forth and not go out until He brings judgment on the earth, and in His name the nations will trust” (Is. 42:2-4). Also in Psalm 21: “Now I am a worm, and not a man, a reproach to men and the humiliation of men. All who saw Me mocked, spoke with their lips, nodded their heads. He trusts in the Lord, let him deliver him, let him save him as he wills him” (Ps. 21:7-9); “My strength has become weaker, and My tongue has clenched My throat” (Ps. 21:16). And in Zechariah: “And the Lord showed me Jesus, the great priest, standing before the angel of the Lord, and the devil standing at his right hand to resist him... But Jesus was clothed in vile garments and stood before the angel. And he answered and spoke to those standing before him, saying: Take away the vile garments from him. And he said to him: Behold, I have taken away your iniquity from you... and clothe him with a garment and put a clean miter on his head” (Zech. 3:1, 3-5). Paul also says the same thing in his Epistle to the Philippiseys: “Whoever is in the form of God is not equal with God through admiration; but he diminished himself and took on the form of a servant, becoming in the likeness of humanity and being found in the image of a man; He humbled himself, being obedient even to the point of death, death on the cross. Therefore God also exalted Him and gave Him a name that is above every name, that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:6-11). XIV. That He whom the Jews were about to put to death is a righteous man In the book of the Wisdom of Solomon: “let us catch (by flattery) the righteous, because it is indecent for us to eat and opposes our deeds and reproaches us with the sins of the law... He proclaims to us the mind of having God and calls himself the servant of the Lord. It is hard for us to reprove our thoughts, and it is hard for us to see, because his life is not like others and his paths are excellent. We blame him as a reproach and move away from our ways, as if from uncleanness; Blessed is the last of the righteous and glorified by the Father who has God for himself. We will see if his words are true, and we will tempt them to come true to him... We will torment him with vexation and torment, so that we may wear away his meekness and tempt his goodness. We will condemn him to death with reproach... Having thought this, they were deceived, for their malice blinded them, and they did not take away the mysteries of God” (Wis. 2:12–17, 19–22). Also in Isaiah: “You see how the righteous perish and no one accepts it in his heart, and the righteous men fall to the ground and no one understands; from the face of unrighteousness the righteous has taken action. His burial will be in peace" (Isa. 57:1-2): That is why in the book of Exodus it is first commanded: “If she is innocent and righteous, thou shalt not kill” (Ex. 23:7). And in the Gospel we read that Judas, having repented, said to the priests and elders: “I have betrayed those who have sinned with innocent blood” (Matthew 27:4). XV. That He is called a sheep and a lamb prepared for the slaughter; also - about the mystery of suffering In Isaiah: “Like a sheep that is led to the slaughter, and like a Lamb that is silent before its shearers, so it does not open its mouth. In His humility His judgment will be taken; Who can confess His generation? As if His belly was lifted from the ground, for the sake of the iniquities of my people, led to death. And I will give the wicked instead of His burial, and the rich instead of His death; for you will not commit iniquity, but flattery will be found in His mouth... For this sake He will inherit many, and will share the gain of the strong; His soul was first delivered up to death and imputed with the transgressors, and He bore the sins of many and was handed over for their iniquities” (Is. 53:7-9, 12). Also in Jeremiah: “Lord, tell me, and I will understand, then I will see their undertakings. But I, like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter, did not understand, because I had thought an evil thought against me, saying, “Come, let us put wood for his bread, and let us destroy him from the land of the living, and let his name not be remembered by anyone” (Jer. 11:18-19). And in the book of Exodus, God says to Moses: “let every one take a sheep from the houses of his fathers... a perfect male sheep, blameless and one of a kind, you shall receive from the lamb and from the goats... and they shall slaughter the whole multitude of the council of the children of Israel at evening. And they will receive it from the shelter and anoint it on both the rootstock and on the grass in the houses, and eat it in them. And they will eat meat in that night of fire, and they will eat unleavened bread with bitter herbs. You will not take them away harshly, below boiled in water, but baked by fire, the head with the legs and the womb; You will not abandon it until morning and you will not break its bones, but the remains of it you will burn with fire until morning. And you took it off: your loins are girded, and your saps are on your feet, and your staffs are in your hands, and you took it off with care. “The Passover is the Lord’s” (Ex. 12:3–11). And also in the Apocalypse: “And I saw, and behold, in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures, and in the midst an old lamb standing as if it had been slain, having seven horns and seven feathers, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he came and received the book from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. And when the book was received, the four living creatures and the twenty and the four elders fell before the lamb, each having harps and vials of gold full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sing a new song saying: “Thou art worthy to receive the book and to open its seals, for thou hast slain and redeemed us to God with Thy blood from every tribe and tongue and people and nations, and thou hast made us Gods, our kings and priests, and we will reign on the earth” (Rev. 5:6-10). The same is in the Gospel of John: “When John saw Jesus coming to himself in the morning, he said, “Behold, the lamb of God takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29). XVI. That He is also called a stone In Isaiah, this is what the Lord says: “Behold, I am laying for the foundation of Zion a stone of great value, chosen, a cornerstone, an honorable stone for its foundation, and whoever believes in it will not be put to shame” (Is. 28:16). In Psalm 117: “the stone that he carelessly built, this was the head of the corner; this speed came from the Lord and is wondrous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. O Lord, save; O Lord, make haste. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (Ps. 117:22-26). Zechariah: “Behold, I brought forth the stone that I gave before the face of Joshua, and on one stone they were piled” (Zechariah 3:8–9). Also in Deuteronomy: “And on these stones you wrote all this law clearly” (Deut. 27:8). terebith, which is before the Lord. And Jesus said unto the people, Behold, this stone shall be unto you for a witness: for all the things spoken of the Lord are spoken unto you this day: and this shall be for a testimony unto you in the last days, when ye lie unto the Lord your God" (Joshua 24:26-27). Also in the book of the Acts of the Apostles, Peter says: “princes of the people and elders of Israel, even though we are today tormented because of the good deeds of a weak man, because of this we were saved, be wise to all of you and to all the people of Israel, for in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, for whom God raised from the dead, for this reason stands before you healthy This is a stone rooted from you who built it, which was at the head of the corner and there is no other way of salvation; For there is no other name under heaven given among men, by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:8-12). He is the stone that served as Jacob’s head (for the head of the husband is Christ) at a time when he was sleeping and saw in a dream a ladder touching heaven, on which the Lord was established and on which Angels ascended and descended (Gen. 28ff.): Jacob consecrated this stone and poured oil on it, signifying Christ with the sacrament of anointing. He is the stone on which Moses sat, having ascended to the top of the hill, when Joshua fought against Amalek (Ex. 17ff.): by the mystery of the stone and the firmness of sitting on it, Amalek was defeated by Jesus, that is, the devil was defeated by Christ. He is that great stone on which the ark of the covenant was placed, released and returned by foreigners and brought on a chariot by oxen (1 Samuel 16ff.): He is the stone with which David struck the forehead of Goliath and killed him (1 Samuel 17:49), showing that the devil and his servants are overthrown after defeating the part of the head that does not have on itself that sign by which we are always safe and secure we live. He is the stone that Samuel set up after Israel’s victory over the foreigners, and called Abennezer, that is, “stone of help” (1 Samuel 7:12). XVII. That this stone will finally turn into a mountain and fill the whole earth In Daniel: “And behold, the body is one, a great body it is, and its appearance is high, standing before your face, and its image is terrible. The body, its head is pure from gold, its arm and chest and muscles are silver, its belly and thighs are copper, its legs are iron, its nose, some of it is iron and some of it is meager... until the stone was torn away from the mountain without hands and hit the body in the nose, iron and meager and wear them out to the end; Then the stone, iron, copper, silver and gold were shaken off together, and it became like dust from the summer threshing floor, and I was taken away by a great wind, and no place was found for it; And the stone that struck the body became a great mountain and filled the whole earth” (Dan. 2:31–35). XVIII. That this mountain will appear in the last times and nations will go to it, but only the righteous will climb In Isaiah: “In the last days the mountain of the Lord will be revealed, and the house of God will be on the top of the mountains, and will be exalted above the hills; and all the nations will come to her. And many nations will go out and say: Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord and to the house of the God of Jacob, and He will tell us His way, and we will walk in it. For out of Zion shall come the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem; and the tongue will judge in the midst and expose many people; and they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks... and they will not learn how to fight” (Is. 2:2-4). Also in Psalm 23: “Who will ascend to the mountain of the Lord? or who will stand in His holy place? He is innocent in his hands and pure in heart, who does not take his soul in vain and does not swear by his sincere flattery. This one will receive blessings from the Lord and alms from God his Savior. This is the generation of those who seek the Lord, who seek the face of the God of Jacob” (Ps. 23:3-6). XIX. That Christ is the bridegroom, and His bride is the Church, from which spiritual children are born In Joel: “Blow the trumpet in Zion, consecrate the fast, preach celibacy, gather the people, consecrate the church, elect elders, unite the babes with wet teats; let the groom come from his bed and the bride from her palace” (Joel 2:15-16). Also in Jeremiah: “And I will abolish from the cities of Judah and from the ways of Jerusalem the voice of those who rejoice and the voice of those who rejoice, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride” (Jer. 7:34). And in Psalm 18: “And like a bridegroom he departs from his palace, like a giant his mother-in-law will rejoice in the way. From the end of the heaven is its departure and its meeting to the end of the heaven, and there is nothing that can hide its warmth” (Ps. 19:6-7). The same in the Apocalypse: “Come, I will show you the bride and the lamb’s wife. And he led me in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the city... holy Jerusalem, coming down from heaven from God, having the glory of God” (Rev. 21:9-11). And in the Gospel of John: “You yourselves bear witness to me, that I said (to those who were sent to me from Jerusalem): I am not Christ, but that I was sent before him. Have a bride; have a groom; and the friend of the bridegrooms, standing and listening to him, rejoices with joy for the voice of the bridegrooms” (John 3:28-29). This secret is also indicated on the occasion when Joshua was commanded to take off his shoes, to signify that he was not the groom; for, according to the law, the one who refused the marriage took off his shoes, and the future groom put on his shoes (see Ruth.4:7). Here are the words from the book of Joshua: “And when Joshua was near Jericho, and he looked with his eyes, he saw a man standing before him, and his sword was drawn in his hand. And Jesus came and said to him: Are you ours or one of our fellows? He said to him: I am the archangel of the power of the Lord, now I have come. And Jesus fell with his face to the ground and worshiped him, and said: Lord, what do you command your servant? And the chief captain of the Lord spoke to Jesus: Break the boot from your foot, for the place where you are standing is holy” (Joshua 5:13–15). Likewise, Moses, since he was not the groom, is commanded to take off his shoes, according to the legend of the Book of Exodus: “The Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from a bush; and he sees that the bush is burning with fire, but the bush is not burned up. Moses said: As I pass by, I will see this great vision, as if the bush were not burned up. When the Lord saw him begin to see, the Lord called him out of the bush, saying: Moses! Moses! he said: What is it, Lord? He said: do not approach this; Take the boots from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy. And he said to him: I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob” (Ex. 3:2-6). The same thing is explained in the Gospel of John: “John answered them, saying: I baptize with water, but he stands in the midst of you, whom you do not know; He is the one who comes for me, who was before me, but I am not worthy of Him, that I may loose the thong of His shoe” (John 1:26–27). The Gospel of Luke says: “Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning. And you are like a man who waits for his Lord when he returns from marriage, so that when he comes and pushes the abi, it will be opened to him. Blessed are the servants, for whom the Lord will find those who are watching” (Luke 12:35–37). And also in the Apocalypse: “The Lord God Almighty reigns: we rejoice and are glad and give glory to Him; for the lamb had come, and His wife prepared food for herself” (Rev. 19:6-7). XX. That the Jews would nail Him to the cross In Isaiah: “I have stretched out my hands all day long to people who do not repent and speak against people who do not walk in the true way, but follow their sins” (Is. 65:2). And in Jeremiah: “Come, let us put wood into his bread, and let us destroy him from the land of the living” (Jer. 11:19). Also in Deuteronomy: “And your life will hang before your eyes, and you will fear day and night, and you will not have faith in your life” (Deut. 28:66). And in Psalm 21: “I have dug up my hands and my nose, I have worn out all my bones; They looked at me and despised me; I divided my garments for myself and cast lots for my clothes. But You, Lord, do not remove Your help from Me, attend to my intercession; deliver my soul from the weapon and my only begotten dog from the hand of the dog; save me from the mouth of lions and from the horns of the unicorn my humility. I will tell your name to my brethren; in the midst of the church I will sing praises to you” (Ps. 21:17-23). And in Psalm 119: “Nail my fear to Thy fear” (Ps. 119:120). And also in Psalm 140: “The lifting up of my hand is an evening sacrifice” (Ps. 140:2). Zephaniah said about this sacrifice: “Fear the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is near; For the Lord has prepared his sacrifice and sanctified those who are called” (Zeph. 1:7). In Zechariah: “and they will look upon Him, His blood has broken” (Zechariah 12:10). And in Psalm 87: “I have cried to You, O Lord, all day long, I have lifted up my hands to You” (Ps. 87:10). Therefore, also in the Gospel of John, the Lord says: “just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so it is fitting for the Son of man to be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him... may have eternal life” (John 3:14-15). XXI. That in suffering and the sign of the cross all the strength and might From Habakkuk: “The heavens are covered with His virtue (power), and the earth is filled with His praises, and His radiance will be like light; rise in His hands and place love as the sovereignty of your strength; the word will go before Him and go out into the field under His foot” (Hab. 3:3-5). Also in Isaiah: “A Son was born unto us, and was given unto us, whose rulership was upon His frame; and His name is called the great angel of counsel” (Is. 9:6). By the sign of the cross Joshua defeated Amalek through Moses. In the book of Exodus, Moses said to Jesus: “Choose for yourself strong men, and go out and fight against Amalek in the morning; and behold, I will stand on the top of the mountain, and the rod of God is in my hand... And it came to pass, when Moses lifted up his hand, that Israel prevailed; Whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hand is heavy; and he took up a stone, placed it on it, and sat on it, and Aaron and Hor supported his hand, one from here, and the other from there; and Moses' hands were strengthened until the sun went down. And Jesus overcame Amalek and all his people by killing him with the sword. The Lord said to Moses: write this in the books as a keepsake and put it in the ears of Jesus, for by destruction I will destroy the memory of Amalek from under heaven” (Ex. 17:9, 11-14). XXII. That in this sign of the cross lies salvation for all who will be marked by it on their foreheads The Lord says this in Ezekiel: “Go through the midst of the city of Jerusalem and show a sign on the faces of the men who groan and are sick because of all the iniquities that happen among them” (Ezek.9:4). And further: “Cut and have no mercy on your eyes and have no mercy; slay the old, the young, the virgin, the little children, and the wives for consumption; But don’t touch anyone who has a sign on them; Begin from my sanctified ones” (Ezek.9:5-6). Also in the book of Exodus, God says to Moses: “And the blood will be for you as a sign on the houses in which you will be there; and I will see the blood and cover you, and there will be no plague in you to perish when I strike the land of Egypt” (Ex. 12:13). Also in the Apocalypse: “and I saw, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him an hundred and fourty and four thousand, having the name of His Father written on their foreheads” (Rev. 14:1). And in another place of the Apocalypse: “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Blessed are they that do His commandments, that their territory may be a living tree” (Rev. 22:13–14). XXIII. That during His suffering there will be darkness in the middle of the day Amos: “And in that day, saith the Lord God, the sun will go down at noon, and the light of the earth will be darkened that day; And I will turn your festivals into pity and all your songs into mourning” (Amos 8:9–10). Also in Jeremiah: “She who gave birth to seven was idle, her soul was impoverished, the sun set for her while it was still midday, she was ashamed and reproached; I will give the rest of them to the sword before their enemies” (Jer. 15:9). And in the Gospel: “from the sixth hour darkness came over all the earth until the ninth hour” (Matthew 27:45). XXIV. That He will not be overcome by death and will not remain in the underworld In Psalm 29: “Lord, you have brought up my soul from hell” (Ps. 29:4). Also in Psalm 15: “Do not leave my soul in hell, let Thy venerable one see corruption” (Ps. 15:10). And also in Psalm 3: “I fell asleep and fainted, and arose, for the Lord would intercede for me” (Ps. 3:6). And in the Gospel of John: “no one will take my soul from Me, but I lay it down for Myself; The Imam shall lay down the region, and the Imam shall again accept the region: I have received this commandment from My Father” (John 10:18). XXV. That He will rise from the grave on the third day In Hosea: “He will heal us in two days; on the third day we will rise again” (Hosea 6:3). Also in the book of Exodus: “The Lord spoke to Moses: Go down and testify to the people and cleanse me this day and morning, and let the garments be scattered; and let them be ready on the third day; on the third day the Lord will descend upon Mount Sinai” (Ex. 19:10–11). And in the Gospel: “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah; Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale for three days and three nights, so will the Son of man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights” (Matthew 12:39–40). XXVI. That after the Resurrection He will receive all power from the Father and His power will be eternal In Daniel: “I saw in a dream at night, and behold, the Son of man came upon the clouds of heaven, and came even to the Ancient of Days, and was brought before Him; and to him was given power and honor and a kingdom, and all people, tribes and nations would serve him; His power is everlasting power, which will not pass away, and His kingdom will not be destroyed” (Dan. 7:13–14). Also in Isaiah: “Today I will rise, says the Lord, today I will be glorified, today I will be exalted. Today you will see, today you will feel, the strength of your spirit will be in vain: you will burn with fire” (Is. 33:10-11). And in Psalm 109: “The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I will make your enemies your footstool. The Lord will send you a rod of strength from Zion, and rule in the midst of your enemies” (Ps. 109:1-2). The same in the Apocalypse: “And I turned to see the voice that spoke with me; and turning he saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the seven lampstands she was like the Son of man, clothed in a robe, and girded about her breast with a golden girdle; His head and hair are white, like yarina white, like snow; and His eyes are like a flame of fire; and His nose is like halkolivan, as in a furnace; and His voice was like the voice of many waters; and holding in his hand the seven stars, and from His mouth a sharp and sharp sword proceeds, and His face, like the sun, shines in its strength. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as if dead; and place your right hand on me, saying to me: Fear not; I am the first and the last, and the living; and I was dead and behold, I am alive forever and ever, Amen; and the Imam is the key of hell and death” (Rev. 1:12–18). Also in the Gospel, the Lord, after His Resurrection, says to the disciples: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth; So go and teach all languages, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all the things given to you in the commandments” (Matthew 28:18-20). XXVII. That one can come to God the Father in no other way than through His Son, Jesus Christ In the Gospel: “I am the way and the truth and the life; no one will come to the Father except by Me” (John 14:6). Elsewhere: “I am the door; By me whoever enters will be saved” (John 10:9). Also in the Gospel: “many prophets and righteous women saw things that they saw, but did not see; and hear even as you hear, and not hear” (Matthew 13:17). And again: “believe in the Son to have eternal life; But if anyone does not believe in the Son, he will not see the life, but the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36). Also in Paul’s Epistle to Ephesians: “And he came to bring good news of peace to you far and near; Therefore, the imams brought both in one Dus to the Father” (Eph. 2:17–18). And in the Epistle to the Romans: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God; We will be justified by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:23–24). Also in the First Epistle of the Apostle Peter: “Christ alone suffered for our sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). In the same letter: “To preach the gospel to the dead also, that they may receive judgment” (1 Peter 4:6). And in the First Epistle of John: “Let everyone deny the Son, not having the Father; but confess that you have the Son and the Father” (1 John 2:23). XXVIII. What He has to come as a Judge In Malachi: “Behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace, and I will be burned, and all the foreign women and all who do wickedness will be like a stalk; and I will burn for the day of the Lord to come, says the Lord” (Mal.4:1). And in Psalm 49: “The God of gods, the Lord, spoke, and called the earth from the east of the sun to the west. From Zion the splendor of His beauty, God will come, our God, and will not be silent: a fire will kindle before Him and a green storm will surround Him. He will call the heavens from above and the earth to judge his people. Gather to Him His venerables, who have bequeathed His covenant regarding sacrifices. And the heavens will declare His righteousness, for God is the Judge” (Ps. 49:1-6). Also in Isaiah: “The Lord God of hosts will come out and destroy the army, will stir up zeal and cry out against his enemies with strength; silent, food and always keep silent? (Isaiah 42:13–14). Again in Psalm 67: “Let God rise again, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from His presence. As smoke disappears, let them disappear; as wax melts in the presence of fire, so let sinners perish from the face of God, and let the righteous rejoice, let them rejoice before God, let them enjoy themselves in joy. Sing to God, sing to His name, create a path for him who has ascended to the west; The Lord is His name, and rejoice before Him. Let them be troubled at His presence, the father of the orphans and the judge of widows; God is in his holy place. God brings like-minded people into the house, destroying those who are bound by courage, and those who live in tombs are also grieving. God, sometimes You go out before your people, sometimes You pass by in the desert” (Ps. 67:2-8). And also in Psalm 81: “Rise up, O God, judge the earth; for You are an inheritor among all nations” (Ps. 82:8). Also in the Gospel of Mark: “What do we have to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? You have come to destroy us” (Mark 1:24). And in the Gospel of John: “For the Father judges no one, but giveth all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son as they honor the Father, and whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him” (John 5:22–23). And in Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians: “For it is fitting for us all to appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that everyone may receive what he has done with his body, either good or evil” (2 Cor. 5:10). XXIX. That He is the King who will reign forever In Zechariah: “Cry to the daughter of Zion 4: Behold, your King is coming to you, righteous and saving, he is meek and always upon the yoke and the young stallion” (Zechariah 9:9). Also in Isaiah: “Who will tell you the eternal place? walk in truth... and shake your hands from gifts; harden the ears, lest blood hear judgment; Close your eyes, so that he will not see untruth. This one will dwell in a high cave of strong stone; bread will be given to him and his water will be faithful: you will see the King with glory” (Is. 33:14-17). And in Malachi: “I am a great king, says the Lord Almighty, and my name is bright among the nations” (Mal. 1:14). The same in Psalm 2: “I have been appointed King by him over Zion, His holy mountain, who will proclaim the commandment of the Lord” (Ps. 2:6-7). And in Psalm 21: “they will remember and turn to the Lord all the ends of the earth will worship before Him; for He is the kingdom of the Lord, and He possesses the tongues” (Psalm 21:28-29). the gates are your princes, and the everlasting gates will be lifted up, and the King of glory will come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory" (Ps. 23:7-10). And again in Psalm 44: “My heart will vomit out good words, I will speak my deeds to the princess; my tongue is the cane of a scribe and a cursive writer. Handsome in kindness than the sons of men, grace was poured out in Your lips; For this sake, God bless You forever. Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O Mighty One. By Thy beauty and Thy kindness, and prosper and reign, for the sake of truth and meekness and righteousness” (Ps. 44: 2-5). In Psalm 5: “My King and my God, I will pray to You..., in the morning hear my voice, in the morning I will appear to You and see me” (Ps. 5: 3–4). And in Psalm 96: “Lord, reign, let the earth rejoice; let the many islands rejoice” (Ps. 96:1). And again in Psalm 44: “The queen appeared at your right hand, in robes of gold, her garments were full of gold. Hear, daughter, and see, and incline your ear, and forget your people and your father’s house, and the king will desire your kindness: because of Him is your Lord” (Ps. 44:10-12). Even in Psalm 73: “But God our King, before the ages, wrought salvation in the midst of the earth” (Ps. 73:12). Also in the Gospel of Matthew: “Now Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, and behold, a wolf came from the east to Jerusalem, saying: Where is the King of the Jews born? For we saw His star in the east and when we came to our feet we worshiped Him” (Matthew 2:1–2). And in the Gospel of John, Jesus said: “My kingdom is not of this world; Even if My kingdom had been of this world, my servants would have fought, lest I should be betrayed by Judea; now my kingdom is not from here. Pilate said to Him: Art thou a king? Jesus answered: You say that I am the King; For this I was born and for this I came into the world, that I may bear witness to the truth; and everyone who is of the truth will listen to My voice” (John 18:36-37). XXX. That He is both Judge and King In Psalm 71: “O God, grant Thy judgment to the king, and Thy righteousness to the king’s son, to judge Thy people in righteousness” (Ps. 72:1–2). Also in the Apocalypse: “and I saw the heavens opened, and behold, a white horse, and the one riding on him was faithful and true, and just and warlike; His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns; His name is written, no one knows except He himself; and clothed in a robe of scarlet blood. And His name is called the Word of God. And the host of heaven followed Him on white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And from His mouth came a weapon (both) sharp, so that it would pierce the tongues; and I will shepherd Him with a rod of iron, and He will crush the winepress of the rage and wrath of God Almighty. And to have His name written on his robe and on his side: “King of the king and Lord of the Lord” (Rev. 19:11-16). Also in the Gospel: “When the Son of man comes in His glory and all the holy angels with Him; then He will sit on the throne of His glory, and all the nations will be gathered before Him and will separate them from each other, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will put the sheep on his right hand, and the goats on his left. Then the King says to those on His right hand: Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Be hungry, and give Me food; You became thirsty and drank Me; he was strange, and he knew me; naked and clothed; I am sick and visiting Me; you were in prison, and came to Me. Then the righteous women answered Him, saying: Lord, when did I see You hungry and drink You? or thirsty and drunk? When did you show strangeness and introduce? or naked and covered? When did I see You sick, or in prison, and come to You? And having answered, the King said to them: Amen, I say to you, since you have made one of these lesser brothers of Mine, you have made them with Me. Then He also speaks to those who are on His side: Depart from Me, cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil 5 and his angel. You are hungry, and you will not let Me eat; You were thirsty and did not give Me a drink; he was strange, and did not know Me; naked and unclothed; sick and in prison, and not a visitor to Me. Then they also answered Him, saying: Lord, when did I see You hungry, or thirsty, or strange, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and not serving You? Then he answers them, saying: Amen, I say to you, because you did not make the least of these, neither did you make them for Me. And these go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into everlasting life” (Matthew 25:31-46). At St. Cyprian and in the Vulgate this passage from the Wisdom of Sirach reads like this: “I came out of the mouth of the Most High, firstborn before all creation. I made it so that an unceasing light would rise in the sky and, as if with darkness, cover the whole earth. I dwelt on high, and my throne was on a pillar of cloud. I walked around the circle of heaven, penetrated into the depths of the abyss, walked on the waves of the sea, stood on the whole earth; had primacy among every people, every language; trampled the hearts of all high and low with her power. In me is all the hope of life and strength. Come to me, all who desire me.” Our Slavic text: “food... how do you give the Lord’s work?” corresponds to the Greek LXX: κυρίῳ παρεχετε ἀγῶα.
