The book of Ezra is called so because Ezra himself, who was a priest and reader, tells and describes the return of the children of Israel from Persia to Jerusalem. This return followed first with permission, and then according to the command of the kings Cyrus and Darius, given to Joshua, the son of Josedek, Ezra and Zerubbabel; They competed to resolve certain issues, receiving the promise that the winner could ask the king for anything he wanted. One said that wine is strongest, and the other said that the king is stronger; Zerubbabel said that the strongest thing is women, and the strongest thing is the truth. When he, having said this, remained victorious and received permission to ask for whatever he wanted, he began to ask that the Jews be freed from captivity and Jerusalem built. As he asked, so it was done; the captives were released, because then seventy years of God's wrath had been fulfilled. The descendants of Judah and Benjamin and the Levites who returned from captivity numbered forty-two thousand people, three hundred and thirty horses, two hundred and forty-five mules, four hundred and thirty-five camels, seven thousand three hundred and thirty-four male and female servants, two hundred singers, and six thousand seven hundred and twenty donkeys. The builders were Zerubbabel, Joshua the son of Jozedek and Nehemiah; and Ezra, being versed in the law, brought the law and read it, and arranged everything pertaining to the church and the Levites. He declared the law and made an order that those who took foreign wives during captivity should expel them. They all drove them out and were cleansed, and he celebrated Passover according to the law, as it is written, and also fasting. This ends the first book of Ezra.
