With the blessing of Archbishop Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas We would like to express our gratitude to Andrei Aleksandrovich Klishas for his help in publishing the book. The book that the respected reader holds in his hands is a unique publication of its kind, since its text was published in full form for the first time in the past century. “Memoirs of an old professor. From 1847 to 1913,” written by the famous Russian scientist-theologian of pre-revolutionary Russia - Professor Alexander Lvovich Katansky, - were originally published in the periodical of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy - the magazine “Christian Reading”, in issues from January 1914 to December 1917. The memoirs, covering the period from 1847 to 1913, were never published as a separate publication, although a beginning had been made: in 1914, in Petrograd, in addition to a journal publication, the first book devoted to the period only from 1847 to 1867 appeared. However, there was no continuation of a separate publication. Nevertheless, “Memoirs” of the honored professor of the St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Theological Academy, a resident of Nizhny Novgorod, a graduate of the Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary, have always been in demand among historians, writers, theologians, publicists and just readers interested in the past of the famous educational theological institutions of Russia - described truthfully, historically accurately and in a humanly sincere and emotional way. The initiative for the complete publication of “Memoirs” today belongs to the professor of the Moscow Theological Academy and Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary Vladimir Dmitrievich Yudin. Written by him, together with MDA professor A.I. Sidorov, the biography of A.L. Katansky in an abbreviated form is presented in this edition as a preface to the main text of “Memoirs”.
