Gen.9:18. “And the sons of Noah that came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.” Often the Seventy Interpreters, not being able to accurately render in Greek the letter het, which signifies double aspiration, inserted the Greek letter chi to show us that we should aspirate words of this kind. Why in this place they translated Cham instead of Ham, from which Egypt is still called Ham in Egyptian. Gen.9:27. “May God spread Japheth, and may he dwell in the tents of Shem.” From Shem the Jews are born, from Japheth the people of the Gentiles. So, since the multitude of believers is vast, Japheth received the name “vastness.” The word [in Hebrew] is leyepheth ( לְיֶ ֔ פֶת ). And the words “let him dwell in the tents of Shem” prophesy about us: after the rejection of Israel, we study and understand the Scriptures. Gen.9:29. “And all the days of Noah were 950 years.” Do you see? After the flood, Noah lived 350 years! From which it is clear that, as I said above, 120 years are the years given to the pre-flood generation for repentance, and not approved as the life expectancy of mortals.
