What I have heard is that already in Pskov the laity judge priests and execute them in church matters, other than that, except for the Christian law: it is not right for the laity to judge, execute, or condemn a priest, nor say a word against him; but whoever appoints them is the saint who judges them, executes them, and teaches them. And you, my children, Pskovites, from great to small, would naturally not judge the priests, nor execute them, would naturally not have a sin on their souls, nor would they make a pledge for the whole of Pskov. I also heard that some young priests became widowed, and left the priesthood and got married; and it is also not suitable for you to judge, so that naturally they are not borrowed 1323 with anything; the saint knows that whoever appoints them will install them and cast them out, and judge and execute and teach; and it’s not right for you to get involved in those matters. And whoever the Church of God and the saint announces, and according to that announcement it is appropriate for you to hold him in the same way. And what about church lands or villages, whether they will be purchased, or who will give, when dying, to which churches, and in those natural lands, no one from you would enter, so that the Church of God would not be abused, for this is a great sin from God. For this reason, I, according to my rank and according to the region that God has given me, am teaching you, my children, and you listen to my words. And whoever does not listen to this letter, do not have God’s mercy on him or my blessing; or whoever listens, and the mercy of God is upon you.
