About Church courts, about lands and about duties 1319 This is Cyprian, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus', according to the tradition of the Holy Apostles and Holy Fathers, the Rule, which set the limits of the churches of God, metropolises and bishoprics, and whoever gravitated towards which metropolitanate, or to the bishopric: monasteries, abbots with monks, priests, deacons and every church person, then all are under authority, in obedience to the saint: let no one dare, not a single peasant, no matter how small or great, to intervene in those matters. If someone from those abbots, or priests, or monks is about to be taken away from the saint by the worldly rulers, the divine rules are cast out and excommunicated; but whoever has to intercede for them is not blessed. And what about churchyards and villages and lands and water and duties, what was drawn to the Church of God, or purchases, or who gave according to the memory of sharing, but not a single Christian intercedes: and whoever intercedes is not blessed by the divine rules. For this reason, I Cyprian, Metropolitan of All Rus', according to those divine rules, gave this charter of mine to the bishopric of Novgorod, to St. Sophia, and to his son, Archbishop Ivan of the Great Novagorod: yes, as many monasteries have abbots, let him have subjugation and obedience, and the entire priestly rank; also churchyards and villages and land and water with all the duties that, under the first rulers, drew to that bishopric, to St. Sophia: just as under the first rulers of 1320, no matter what was there, so now it will pull to St. Sophia and to Bishop Ivan. And no one would dare to enter into church duties, neither into the lands, nor into the waters; they would fear the execution of the holy rules; and whoever stood up would have stopped 1321 from this hour. And whoever listens to the holy Apostles, the rules and the holy Councils, tradition and my teaching, on that, the mercy of God and His Most Pure Mother and my blessing; and whoever does not listen to my blessing and attempts to offend the Church of God, do not awaken the mercy of God and His Most Pure Mother, nor my blessing. And the letter was given in Moscow, in the summer of 6900 1322, the month of August on the 29th day. Contents from the Synod. list Makar.
