You know in me, O Christ, the doer of all iniquity and truly a vessel of all kinds of vices, which I also know, and full of shame and shame; I was overcome by oppressive sadness and my heart was possessed by an unbearable tightness. But the light of Your face that mysteriously shone upon me drove away thoughts, erased the darkness and brought joy down into my humble soul. So, I would like, Christ, to be sad, but sadness does not stick to me. I am saddened rather so that I do not die for this joy and do not deprive my unfortunate future joy. But do not deprive me of it, Master, never, neither now nor in the next century, my King! For the contemplation of Your face is joy: are you not, my God, every and only good? But, providing every good thing to those who see You, You fulfill them through communion and fellowship with those whom You look upon, not those who talk about it, alas! as soon as about the future, but those who, even now, being in the body, are worthy of You, that is, those who have been cleansed through repentance.
You Yourself see them and allow them to clearly see You, not at all in a ghost or imagination of the mind, and not only by memory, as some think, but by the very truth of a divine and terrible deed, in fulfillment of a truly divine economy. For You then create the unity of the distant, being the God of salvation for all sinners.
For those who received Your baptism from infancy and lived their whole lives unworthy of it will have greater condemnation than those who were not baptized, as having desecrated, according to Your words (Heb. 10:29), Your holy garment. And You, the Savior, knowing this well, granted us repentance for secondary cleansing, sealing it with the grace of the Spirit, which we first receive in baptism. Since You did not say that grace is given only through water, but rather through the Spirit and the invocation of the Trinity. So, when we are baptized, being insensitive children, as imperfect, we receive grace in an imperfect way, receiving only permission from the first crime. For this alone, I think, You commanded, Master, to perform this divine font, through which those who are baptized enter into the vineyard, receiving redemption from darkness, hell and death, and being completely freed from corruption. The vineyard, it seems to me, is paradise from which we fell, called again into it.
And as Adam was then before the Fall, so are all those who are consciously baptized, except those who, out of insensibility, did not accept the mental feeling produced by the action of the descending Spirit. In the same way, we all, like Adam, receive commandments to do and keep them. These commandments, understood spiritually, constitute a spiritual and divine law, which is fulfilled bodily through the body through action. Since man is twofold, he also needs a twofold law. If he had not been careless, he would not have fallen away from goodness. For the soul alone cannot do good; but the body, if it does things without divine knowledge, is no better than a working ox or a beast of burden.
So, those who were called through Thy baptism into Thy vineyard, that is, into paradise, and having entered it, became completely sinless and holy, just as the primordial Adam was, then neglected such salvation and Thy unspeakable providence, doing worse deeds than Adam, despising Thy love for mankind and not considering the font of baptism through the Divine Spirit - in this work of Thy terrible economy, how can they, along with their sins, retain their stay inside paradise, which, according to many, is possible? How will those saints who have again become defiled 136 be admitted into it, having desecrated, O my Christ, Thy tunic with vices? And is it even possible to admit that You, pure and holy, could at least dwell inside their dirty hearts? Away, said God, let him not be 137 My child.
For you know 138 that you too were baptized, but then became defiled, just as you sinned when you were a child, and how foolishly you erred. You know how much you cried, how much you lamented, how you then renounced the whole world, being barely prayed for by the prayers of your father Simeon 139. At first, in an intelligent way, through an intelligent feeling, I honored you with a voice, and then with a ray, and after that I humanely appeared to you like light. Then, taking the form of a small fire-like cloud sitting above on your head, I gave you only contemplation of the image and tears of amazement with great tenderness. I burned the passion of the flesh and the darkness of your head, so that from them came, as you know, the smell of its flesh burned in the fire. You completely forgot about those disasters after that and about the cramped conditions that you had to endure then. But I, as an omniscient God, know that faith and that humility that you had towards your father, and that complete renunciation of your will, which is imputed to Me and is martyrdom. For he who does not have his own will completely dies and is found in My will, because he lives in Me.
So, due to the fact that you were almost like that, and he 140 daily forced Me, good by nature, with his tears, I began, as you know, to appear to you more often, little by little cleansing your soul with repentance and burning away the substance of passions that was in you - these are not carnal or material, but immaterial thorns, like dark clouds, like thick darkness and darkness. After you were enlightened, of course, by fasting and the labors of vigil, prayer and all kinds of suffering and washed with incessant hot tears in prayer, in food and even more in drinking, I barely made you a suitable vessel; and not only comprehensible, but also purified in the fire, so that you may remain in it (listen) unburnt. Having thus made you as you saw then, the Light that flew around you and surrounded you, being itself unapproachable by nature, completely entered you and miraculously changed you with a beautiful change.
So, if you do not serve Him with all your deeds, (i.e.) Me, but under some pretext or without pretext you allow in your heart even a small hostile thought against someone and express it in a word or just think badly about it, and if at the same time you do not repent ardently, with tears, having removed from yourself by repentance the hostile thought, as well as any bad disposition of the heart, then this Light will not will abide in you, because He is the Divine Spirit, co-abiding with Me and the Father, as being consubstantial with Me; but secretly and suddenly it will fly away from you, like the setting sun, and disappearing as if in the blink of an eye, it will cease to be visible. How can He really reside in a soul that has not been completely purified and has not come to a sense of repentance? Or how could that soul, which is filled with thorns of passions and sin, endure the nature of unbearable fire? How could it contain an essence that is completely uncontainable? how, being darkness, would it unite with the unapproachable Light and not disappear from His presence?
- No, child, this is in no way and completely impossible, because I am removed from all creatures. When I, the Creator of everything, became a creature, then only in the flesh I became like people, having also, like them, received both soul and mind. Having become a man myself, I did not then make all people gods; but only through faith and observance of My commandments, through baptism and divine communion of My terrible secrets, I give life to everyone. When I say life, I mean My Divine Spirit. However, let those who have My shining Spirit in their hearts know that they have, according to the words of the apostle. Paul, the One who calls to My Father and to Me, saying through them, O Abba, my Father! (Rom. 8:14–15). For since they have become children of God, knowing Me, they look at Me with boldness and call Me Father. The Divine Spirit speaks to each of them who have Him now, absolutely truly: O children, do not be afraid! here I am, as you see, inside you and co-exist. Once and for all, I free you from corruption and death and show you as children and friends of God. This is who I made you! rejoice in the Lord!
So, let this be among people a true sign of those who have become sons of God and heirs and have received My Divine Spirit. Hence they are called Christians not by name, but in reality, in deed and in truth. This reliable and desired deed happens to those whom You, my Christ, clearly foresaw and through the Divine Spirit gave them to be conformed to Your image. For such as those called by You into unspeakable joy, this is always and everywhere possible forever. For everyone else, this seems impossible, for those who, slandering, do not believe it at all, and deluded in their own thoughts, think to calm down, crazy, on empty hopes. Speaking haughtily and subtly, expressing themselves in refined words and interpreting all this in relation to what is dear to them, they are completely careless about Your terrible commandments.
Not wanting to look for You, they imagine that they have You; if they admit that they do not have You, then they preach that You are completely elusive to everyone, and as if none of the people can see You, and that there is no one who surpasses them in knowledge. Therefore, they teach that You are either accessible and perceptible to all people, or completely elusive and inaccessible. But, as darkened ones, they are mistaken in both cases, not understanding the things Divine and human.
Grant them the light of knowledge, send divine fear to their aid, let them rise from the depths of evil and come to the consciousness and feeling that they are in a pit, sitting in darkness, not seeing that Divine Light about which they undertake to speak and testify, not believing that even now there are those who see You. If You do not illuminate them with Your light, and if they do not consciously see it, then how will they fully believe that You are worthy, converse with them and cohabit with them now and forever, as with Your friends and faithful servants, according to Your word. But You are the God of the faithful, not of the unbelievers. Therefore, You do not look at them at all, for how will You, the Savior, show them the light of Your face, when they, denying You, claim that Your eternal Light does not shine in the souls of the saints? - No way, if they do not acquire, according to Your word, great faith and do not begin to diligently preserve Your divine law, devoting themselves for Your sake even to death to the true practice of Your wise commandments. So, this is the salvation of all those who are saved, and there is no other way of salvation, as You said, O my God!
Give mercy, give mercy, O Savior, to those who need You now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
In l. n. there is no this anthem. Equally and P. r. did not preserve it for us, since the end of it was lost (starting from hymn 35). From the table of contents of the hymns in the said code it is clear that the real hymn should be in 55th place in it.
and did not repent, of course. After all, before St. The Father mentioned repentance, which is given to us for secondary cleansing.
From further words it is clear that Simeon is talking about himself here.
Continuing to speak as if on behalf of God, Rev. Simeon recalls here the most important events from his life.
Rev. Simeon means in this case his spiritual father - Simeon the Reverent.
That is, Simeon "Reverent."
