How, being hidden, do You see and observe everything? How, invisible to us, do you see us all? But You, my God, do not know everyone you see, but, loving, You know only those who love You, and only to them (only) do You reveal Yourself. Being the Sun hidden for all mortal nature, You rise in Your (slaves), we see you being them, and they rise in You, having previously been darkened: fornicators, adulterers, libertines (ἄσωτοι), sinners, tax collectors. Through repentance they become sons of Your Divine Light. After all, light, of course, gives birth to light: therefore they also become light, children of God, as it is written (Ps.
81, 6), and gods by grace - those who renounce the vain and deceptive world, without hatred (ἀμίσως) hate their parents and brothers, considering themselves strangers and strangers in life; those who will deprive themselves of wealth and property, completely rejecting addiction to them; those who, for the sake of heavenly glory, from the soul abhor empty glory and human praise; those who cut off their will and became like gentle sheep for the shepherds; those who have become dead in body to every bad deed, working until they sweat at (cultivating) virtues (ἰδρώσαντες εἰς ἀρετῶν τοῦς πόνους) and being guided in life only by the will of the helmsman, through obedience becoming dead and coming to life again; those who, thanks to the fear of God and the memory of death, shed tears all day and night and intelligently fall at the feet of the Lord, asking for mercy and remission of sins. These, through every doing of good (τῶν καλών) come to a good state (οὖτοι ἐν ἕξει γίνονται τοῦ καλοῦ) and, like those who cry daily and diligently (ἐπιπόνως) those who push, attract (to themselves) mercy.
With frequent prayers, unspoken sighs and streams of tears, they purify the soul and, seeing its purification, perceive the fire of love and the fire of desire - to see it completely purified. But since it is impossible for them to find the end of the world, their purification is endless.
For no matter how much I am purified and enlightened, wretched me, no matter how much I see the Spirit (Holy) purifying me, it will always seem to me (only) the beginning of purification and vision, because in the infinite depth and in the immeasurable height who can find the middle or the end? I know that there is a lot [of light], but I don’t know how much. Strongly wanting more and more, I constantly sigh that I have been given little (although it seems to me like a lot) in comparison with what, as I guess, is far away from me, which, seeing, I lust and think that I have nothing, since, completely not feeling the wealth given to me, although I see the Sun, I do not consider it as such. How is this possible? - listen and believe. What I see is the Sun, Which is inexpressibly pleasant to the senses; It attracts the soul to ineffable and divine love. The soul, seeing Him, ignites and burns with love, wanting to completely have within itself what appears to it, but cannot, and therefore it grieves and (no longer) considers it good to see or feel Him.
When the One who is visible to me and cannot be contained by anyone, as truly unapproachable, deigns to have mercy on my contrite and humble soul, then as He appears to me, shining before my face, He is seen shining in me, completely filling me, humbled with all joy, all desire and divine sweetness. This is a sudden transformation and a wonderful change, [and in general] what is happening in me is inexpressible (in words). After all, if someone saw that this sun, visible to everyone, descended into his heart and everything moved into him, and would also shine; then wouldn’t he die from the miracle and become speechless, and wouldn’t everyone who saw it be amazed? If someone sees the Creator of the sun, like a luminary, shining within himself, acting and speaking, then how will he not be amazed and shudder at such a vision? how can he not love (his) Life-Giver? People love people like themselves when they seem to them to be somewhat better than others; The Creator of all, the only immortal and omnipotent, who, having seen Him, will not love?
If many, believing by hearing, loved Him, and the saints (even) died for Him, and (nevertheless) they are alive; then those who have shared the vision of Him and the light, known by Him and having come to know Him, how can they not love Him? tell me, how will they not cry incessantly for His sake? How will they not despise the world and what is in the world? How will they not renounce all honor and glory, who, having become above all glory and honor of the earth and having loved the Master, have found the One who dwells outside the earth and everything visible, better than the One who created everything visible, as well as invisible, and received immortal glory, having in Him every good thing without lack? Also, they drew every remission [of sins] and every desire for eternal blessings and divine things, like some kind of wealth, from the same eternally living source, from which grant us, O Lord, and all who seek and ardently love You, to be abundantly satisfied, so that we, too, with Your saints, may enjoy eternal blessings forever and ever. Amen.
In P. r. this is the 8th word, and in Latin. translation Chapter 8
