After this, the Prophet narrates how during the reign of Zedekiah, in the fourth year, the false prophet Hananiah, in the presence of the people and priests, dared to say: (Jer.28:2). This is what the “Lord” of hosts says: “The God of Israel, who crushed the king of Babylon with a yoke.” (Jer.28:3). “And two more years, I will return” the carried away sacred “vessels; (Jer.28:4) and I will bring back Jeconiah” with all the captives. The Prophet Jeremiah himself, wanting to show that he wanted this, said out loud to everyone: Jer.28:6. May the Lord confirm your word, which you have prophesied, that the vessels will be returned to the house of the Lord, and all those who have been carried away from Babylon to this place. However, he did not want to confirm the prophecies with his consent. For he said: Jer.28:7. Above all, hear this word that I speak in your ears yours, and “in the ears of all people.” (Jer. 28:8) “The prophets who were before me, and before you, from the beginning of time, prophesied over many lands, and against great kingdoms, about armies, and about destruction,” and about death. (Jer.28:9) “The prophet prophesied peace; when the word comes, they recognize the prophet, and the Lord is his messenger in faith;” that is, the fulfillment in practice will prove the truth of the prophecy. Therefore, let's see whether, according to my prophecy, we will be betrayed to the Babylonians. But the false prophet did not take advantage of this at all; on the contrary, he crushed the treasures that the Prophet was carrying, saying that he would be crushed (Jer. 28:11) by “the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar” after two years. The God of all commanded the Prophet to say to Ananias: Jer.28:13. You destroyed the treasures of wood, and I will create “instead of those treasures of iron.” He calls the yoke of Babylon (Jer. 28:14) “iron,” because for disobedience they will be punished with the heaviest punishment. Then the Prophet, knowing for sure that Ananias’ prophecy was false, said to him with grief: Jer.28:15. Hear, Ananias: the Lord did not send you a message: you made these people to trust in unrighteousness; that is, you brought the people to the point that they evaded and believed your false word. Then Jeremiah spoke about the death of the false prophet and about the immensity of God’s patience; because he did not immediately take his life, expecting repentance, but after seven months he put to death the one who persisted in wickedness.
