“And it came to pass in the fourth and tenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria went up against all the strong cities of Judah, and took them. And King Sennacherib sent an ambassador... Rapshakes (Rabshakes) from Lachish... to King Hezekiah... And Rapshakes said to them: cry out to Hezekiah thus... behold, trust in this broken rod of the Reeds, in Egypt, if a man leans on him, he will enter into his hand and perforate you... The Lord He said to me: go up to this land and destroy it” (Is. 36:1-2, 4, 6, 10). Rabshakeh, the chief butler, was sent to Jerusalem to convince its inhabitants to surrender the city to the lord of Rabshakah, deceiving the inhabitants of Jerusalem with the fact that his master did not come against them in war of his own free will, but by the will of God, who said to him: “Come up to this land.” Rabshakeh spoke in Judean, or because he was from among the Israelites who had previously been taken captive, and was now sent by the Assyrian princes in order to speak through him with the Jews; or because Rabshakeh was Sennacherib's translator, since he knew both languages.
