“Come, O Gentiles, and you will hear” (Is. 34:1). Just as the prophet previously spoke about the Assyrians alone, so now he begins to speak together about the Assyrians and the Edomites. “And the sky will disappear... and all the stars will fall” (Is. 34:4), that is, the pride and all the strength of the Assyrians will fall, for the prophet, under the image of the powers of heaven, represents the princes of the Assyrians. “My sword is drunk in heaven” (Is. 34:5), that is, with the blood of the Assyrians, represented under the image of heaven. “As the leaves fall from the vine, and as the leaves of the fig tree fall” (Is. 34:4). This is said about the kingdom of the Assyrians, and after them the Edomites will receive judgment. “Like the Lord’s sacrifice in Bozrah” (Is. 34:6) upon his return; The sacrifice is that the Edomites will be destroyed by the sword in the judgment of righteousness. “And the unicorns, that is, the Edomites, will fall with them, and the earth will be drunk with their blood. And its streams will turn to pitch, and its land to a bug... And the birds will inherit it, and the hedgehogs, owls and corvids will nest in it... and the demons will hide... then the monsters of the night will rest, having found their own resting places" (Is. 34: 7, 9, 11, 14 ). All the horrors listed here by the prophet will actually be in Idumea after the predicted desolation; Instead of inhabitants, birds, hedgehogs, corvids and vultures will settle in the houses of Edom. “And they will inherit it, that is, Edomites, forever... And His hand divided it among them in measure... and not one of them will perish. Search in the book of the Lord, and you will find that nothing perished” (Is. 34:17, 16), that is, everything that Moses and other prophets predicted about the Assyrians and Edomites was fulfilled over them, and not one of their predictions remained in vain.
