1–15. The generation of Aaron, or the high priestly line until the time of the Babylonian captivity. 16–30. Descendants of Gershon, Kohath and Merari. 31–49. The ancestors of Heman, Asaph and Ethan, the leaders of the Levitical choirs of the time of David. 50–53. Descendants of the high priest Eleazar to Ahimaaz. 54–81. Dwellings are places where the Levites settled.
1 Chronicles 6:1. The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
1 Chronicles 6:2. The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izgar, Hebron and Uzziel.
1 Chronicles 6:3. Children of Amram: Aaron, Moses and Miriam. Aaron's sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
Descent of Aaron from Levi. The names of the sons of Levi, Kohath, Amram and Aaron are counted in (Gen.46:11; Exod.6:18,20,23; Num.3:2–4).
1 Chronicles 6:4. Eleazar begat Phinehas, Phinehas begat Abishui;
1 Chronicles 6:5. Abishui begat Bukkiy, Bukkiy begat Uzziah;
1 Chronicles 6:6. Uzziah begat Zerahiah, Zerahiah begat Meraioth;
1 Chronicles 6:7. Meraioth begat Amariah, Amariah begat Ahitub;
1 Chronicles 6:8. Ahitub begat Zadok, Zadok begat Ahimaaz;
Verses 1 Chronicles 6:4–15. Descendants and successors of Eleazar son of Aaron in the high priesthood. Considering the line of Eleazar as the only legitimate one, the author lists the high priests who came from it and does not touch upon the line of Ithamar at all, although he knows about its existence (1 Chronicles 24:3 etc.). For this reason alone, the list of Old Testament high priests he provides is incomplete. It is further strengthened by the omission of some high priests from the line of Eleazar. Yoddai - a contemporary of Joash (2 Kings 11), Uriah - a contemporary of Ahaz (2 Kings 16:10), Azariah - a contemporary of Hezekiah and some others. In general, of the 28 high priests of the pre-exilic period (Josephus, “Antiquities of the Jews,” 5:15), the author notes only 23. According to Keil, all these omissions were probably in the sources of the book. Paralipomenon.
1 Chronicles 6:9. Ahimaaz begat Azariah, Azariah begat Johanan;
Since Ahimaaz is the son of Zadok (1 Chronicles 6:8), a contemporary of David (1 Chronicles 24:3), then the time of his life should fall during the reign of Solomon. Zadok’s grandson Azariah could also serve under him, which is confirmed (1 Kings 4:2).
1 Chronicles 6:10. Johanan begat Azariah, the one who was the priest in the church built by Solomon in Jerusalem.
The remark about Azariah cannot be understood to mean that he was the first high priest in Solomon's temple, since Ahimaas was the high priest when it was built. Azariah of this verse is not Azariah, a contemporary of Solomon, but a contemporary of Uzziah the leper, famous for opposing the King when he, arrogating to himself the priestly right, “wanted to burn incense on the altar of incense” (2 Chronicles 26:16-20).
1 Chronicles 6:11. And Azariah begat Amariah, and Amariah begat Ahitub;
Amariah is a contemporary of Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 19:11).
1 Chronicles 6:15. Jozedek went into captivity when the Lord deported the Jews and Jerusalemites by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
The removal of Josedek, the father of the high priest of the post-exilic period Jesus (1 Ezra 3:2; Hagg. 1:1), took place before the destruction of Jerusalem, since during the fall of the city his father Seraiah was the high priest (2 Kings 25:18,21).
1 Chronicles 6:17. Here are the names of the Girson sons: Livni and Shimei.
1 Chronicles 6:18. The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izgar, Hebron and Uzziel.
1 Chronicles 6:19. Sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the descendants of Levi according to their families.
The two sons of Gershon and Merari and the four Kohaths with the same names are counted in (Numbers 3:17–20).
1 Chronicles 6:20. From Girson: Livni his son; Jahab his son; Zimma his son;
1 Chronicles 6:21. Joah his son; Iddo his son; Zerah his son; Jaethrai his son.
The generation of Gershon from his son Livni; the generation of another son, Shimei, is given below when listing the ancestors of Asaph (1 Chronicles 6:39–43). In both lines there is an identity of names (Jahav, Zimma, Zerah), which does not, however, indicate the identity of persons. The last of the descendants of Gershon, Ieafrai, is not mentioned anywhere else.
Verses ( 1 Chron. 6:22–28 ): The line of Kohath carried to Samuel. Below (verses 1 Chronicles 6:33–38) the same genus is given in an ascending line in order to indicate the descent from Samuel of the singer of the time of David Heman. However, both lists present their own characteristics, consisting either in the omission of some members, or in different forms of the same name.
1 Chronicles 6:22. The sons of Kohath: Amminadab his son; Korah his son; Asher his son;
In the place parallel to this verse - verses (1 Chronicles 6:18) and (Exodus 6:18) Amminadab is not listed among the sons of Kohath. And since in each of these places, as well as in (1 Chronicles 6:38), the mediating member between Kohath and Korah is Yitzhar, most exegetes consider the name Aminadab as a nickname (another name) of Yitzhar.
1 Chronicles 6:23. Elkanah his son; Ebiasaph his son; Asher his son;
According to this verse and according to (1 Chronicles 6:22), Ebiasaph is the great-grandson of Korah, but if you compare them with the verse (1 Chronicles 6:37), it will be clear that he is the son of Korah and the brother of Asher, as is directly stated in (Ex. 6:24), where Asser, Elcona and Ebiasaph are called the sons of Korah. As for the descent from Ebiasaph of Assir and Takhath, it is confirmed by the same (1 Chron. 6:37).
1 Chronicles 6:24. Tahaf his son; Uriel his son; Uzziah his son; Saul his son.
The names Uriel, Uzziah and Saul are replaced in (1 Chronicles 6:36) by others: Zephaniah, Azariah and Joel. In view of the well-known custom of giving two names to one person, it is assumed that these are double names.
1 Chronicles 6:25. The sons of Elkanah: Amasai and Achimoth.
Among the ancestors of Heman, Amasai is also called the son of Elkanah (1 Chronicles 6:35–36). In view of this, Elkanah (1 Chronicles 6:36) should be considered one and the same person with Elkanah of the verse (1 Chronicles 6:25), and this latter, in accordance with the indication (1 Chronicles 6:36), should be recognized as the son of Joel, or the same as Saul according to reading (1 Chronicles 6:24).
1 Chronicles 6:26. Elkanah his son; Tzophai his son; Nahaf his son;
1 Chronicles 6:27. Eliath his son; Jeroham his son, Elkanah his son; [Samuel his son].
Zophai is recognized as one person with Zuph the son of Elkanah (1 Chron. 6:35); Nahath - with Toach (1 Chronicles 6:34) and Eliath with Eliel of the same verse. In (1 Kings 1:1) these names are also pronounced with some peculiarities: Tsuf, Tokhu, Eligui. Jeroham, both in (1 Samuel 1:1) and (1 Chronicles 6:34), appears to be the grandfather of the prophet Samuel.
1 Chronicles 6:28. Samuel's sons: firstborn Joel, secondborn Abijah.
In the Hebrew text the name of Samuel's first son is omitted: namely, after the word "gabbekor" (first-born) there is the expression "vashin" ("second"). LXX and blessed. Jerome takes this latter for his own name. Other translators do the same, besides Syrian, Arabic and Slavic, who introduce the name “Joel”, as undoubtedly omitted here (cf. 1 Samuel 8:2; 1 Chronicles 6:33).
1 Chronicles 6:29. Sons of Merari: Mahli; Livni his son; Shimei his son; Uzzah his son;
1 Chronicles 6:30. Shima his son; Haggia his son; Asaiah his son.
The descendants of Merari (six generations) in the Mahli line are not mentioned anywhere else. Berthold tries to identify them with the ancestors of Ephan (1 Chronicles 6:45–47), but these latter belong to the generation of Mushii, the son of Merari, but not of Mahli.
1 Chronicles 6:31. These are the ones whom David made captains over the singers in the house of the Lord, from the time the ark was placed therein.
Verses (1 Chronicles 6:31–49): The ancestors of the leaders of the Levitical choirs of the time of David - Heman, Asaph and Ethan. In the generation of Heman before Levi, the author counts 23 members, Asaph - 15, and Ethan - 14 members. This inequality in the number of members, despite the fact that all three genealogies embrace the same time, clearly shows that the writer of the book. Chronicles conveyed as many names as were in the ancient table under his hands. If the first generation of Heman, numbering 23 generations before Jacob (1 Chronicles 6:38), can be considered quite complete, then the other two are obviously missing many members.
Wed. (1 Chronicles 15:17), (2 Samuel 6:2,17).
1 Chronicles 6:32. They served as singers before the tabernacle of meeting until Solomon built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem. And they entered into their service according to their regulations.
The Levitical choirs were located in the courtyard of the tabernacle of meeting, where worship was performed, consisting of sacrifice and reading psalms, in accordance with the order indicated by David. It was in the middle that Heman stood with his choir, on the right hand Asaph (1 Chronicles 6:39) and on the left Ethan (1 Chronicles 6:44). The remark: “until Solomon built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem,” makes it clear that under the tabernacle, in the courtyard of which the Levites carried out their ministry, is, of course, the tabernacle of David in Zion (2 Sam. 6:17 et c.; 1 Chron. 21:22), but not Moses’ in Gibeon (1 Chr. 21:29).
1 Chronicles 6:33. These are those who stood with their sons: of the sons of Kohath, Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel,
The names of Heman's sons, Asaph and Ethan, are listed below in (1 Chronicles 25:2–4). In this and subsequent verses the ancestors of these persons are named, and first of all Heman, who, as the leader of the singing, is given the title “singer”, distinguishing him from Asaph and Ethan. From the point of view of chronology, it is quite possible that Heman, a contemporary of David, is the grandson of Samuel.
1 Chronicles 6:34. son of Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Eliel, son of Toah,
1 Chronicles 6:35. the son of Zuph, the son of Elkanah, the son of Mahath, the son of Amasai,
1 Chronicles 6:36. son of Elkanah, son of Joel, son of Azariah, son of Zephaniah,
1 Chronicles 6:37. son of Tahath, son of Asher, son of Abiasaph, son of Korah,
1 Chronicles 6:38. the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, the son of Israel;
See comments on (1 Chronicles 6:22–28).
1 Chronicles 6:39. and his brother Asaph, who stood on his right side, Asaph the son of Berechiah, the son of Shima,
Since Heman is a descendant of Kohath (1 Chronicles 6:33), and Asaph is of Gershon, then, obviously, the term “brother” is not used in its own sense, but in the sense of “relative.”
1 Chronicles 6:44. And of the sons of Merari, their brothers, on the left side: Ethan the son of Kishiah, the son of Obadiah, the son of Malluch,
Ethan also bore the name Idithun (1 Chronicles 16:4,25:1).
1 Chronicles 6:48. Their brothers the Levites are assigned to all services at the house of God;
The duty of singing lay with the generations of Heman, Asaph and Ethan, while the rest of the Levites performed at the tabernacle what was indicated to them by Moses (Numbers 3:8,25–26,31,36–37).
1 Chronicles 6:49. Aaron and his sons burned on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense, and performed every sacred rite in the Holy of Holies and for the purification of Israel in everything, as the servant of God Moses commanded.
After pointing out the duties of the singers (1 Chronicles 6:32) and other Levites, the author notes the functions of the priestly and high priestly service: sacrifice, performing rites for cleansing (Lev. 16) and various cleansing actions over the Jews.
1 Chronicles 6:50. These are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son; Phinehas his son; Abihu his son;
1 Chronicles 6:51. Bukkiy, his son; Uzzi his son; Zerahiah his son;
1 Chronicles 6:52. Meraioth his son; Amariah his son; Ahitub his son;
1 Chronicles 6:53. Zadok his son; Ahimaaz his son.
The listing of the high priests, the heads of the priestly family of Aaron, is quite natural after indicating the duties of the priests. Likewise, the above remark about the ministry of singers is accompanied by a calculation. In the present case, a number of the high priests of the generation of Asaph, Heman and Ethan are brought only to Solomon, but not to the Babylonian captivity, as above (1 Chronicles 6:4-14), probably because for the entire passage from v. (1 Chronicles 6:34) the author used a source in which the prominent surnames of Levi are brought down only to the time of David - Solomon.
1 Chronicles 6:54. And these are their dwellings according to their villages within their borders: the sons of Aaron from the tribe of Kohath, since the lot fell to them,
List of cities (1 Chron. 6:55–81) that fell to the descendants of Kohath, Gershon, and Merari during the division of the Promised Land. The calculation of cities is found in greater detail in (Joshua 21). The coincidences in both lists make us think that both writers used the same source, but the latter with less accuracy.
1 Chronicles 6:55. gave Hebron, in the land of Judah, and its suburbs around it;
The verse is almost literally the same as (Joshua 21:11–12). Only Hebron received the ancient name Kiraf-Arba there, and its geographical location is determined by the expression: “on Mount Judah.” “Suburbs” are places for pasturing livestock.
1 Chronicles 6:56. And the fields of the city and its villages were given to Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
Wed. (Joshua 14:6–14,15:13).
1 Chronicles 6:57. The sons of Aaron were also given cities of refuge: Hebron and Libnah with their suburbs, Jattir and Eshtemoah with their suburbs,
After “Jattir” (Joshua 21:13) there is a remark: “and its suburbs.”
1 Chronicles 6:58. and Chilen and its suburbs, Debir and its suburbs,
Instead of “Hilen” in (Joshua 21:15) – “Holon”.
1 Chronicles 6:59. and Ashan and its suburbs, Bethshemesh and its suburbs,
1 Chronicles 6:60. and from the tribe of Benjamin, Geba with her suburbs, and Allemeth with her suburbs, and Anathoth with her suburbs: all their cities in their tribes were thirteen cities.
After Haman (Josh. 21:16) Jutta is mentioned and before Geba - Gibeon (1 Chron. 6:17). These two cities in the book. For some reason, Chronicles was omitted, and the certainty of the omission is confirmed by the last words of article 60: “all the cities are thirteen.” Only 11 are listed by name. Finally, instead of Allemeth, Joshua has Almon. It is difficult to say which reading is more correct.
In accordance with (Joshua 21:5–7), the total number of cities inherited by the remaining descendants of the Levites Kohath, Gershon and Merari is indicated here; the list of names begins with (1 Chronicles 6:67).
1 Chronicles 6:61. The remaining sons of Kohath, from the families of this tribe, were given by lot ten cities from the inheritance of half the tribe of Manasseh.
In accordance with (Joshua 21:5), the words “from the inheritance of half the tribe of Manasseh” should be preceded by the expression: “from the tribe of Dan.”
1 Chronicles 6:64. So the children of Israel gave the Levites cities and their suburbs.
1 Chronicles 6:65. They gave by lot from the tribe of the sons of Judah, and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon, and from the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, those cities which they called by name.
The remark contained in these verses in (Josh. 21: 8-9) stands before the names of the cities inherited by the priests, the descendants of Kohath. In the present place, it breaks the sequence of the narrative: after indicating the total number of cities, it is natural to follow their listing by name.
1 Chronicles 6:66. Some tribes of the sons of Kohath were given cities from the tribe of Ephraim.
In (Josh. 21:20) it is definitely said that the following cities were given to the Levites, the descendants of Kohath. Instead, the book Chronicles uses a vague expression: “to certain tribes of the sons of Kohath.”
1 Chronicles 6:68. and Jokmeam with its suburbs, and Beth-oron with its suburbs,
The name Jokmeam (“gathered in a heap by the people”) is replaced in (Joshua 21:22) by the name of the completely unknown city Kibtzaim (two heaps). Reading a book Chronicles is confirmed by the LXX, which has Ἰεκμαάν.
1 Chronicles 6:69. and Aijalon with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with its suburbs;
According to instructions (Joshua 21:23), both the two named cities and the two omitted ones - Elteke and Gibeon - belonged to the inheritance of the tribe of Dan. In the present case, the author omits an entire verse from the book. Joshua: “and from the tribe of Dan: “Elteke and its suburbs, Gibeon and its suburbs.” The omission corresponds to the omission in (1 Chron. 6:61).
1 Chronicles 6:70. from the half tribe of Manasseh, Aner and its suburbs, Bileam and its suburbs. This is for the generation of the remaining sons of Kohath.
According to instructions (Joshua 21:25), from half the tribe of Manasseh, the descendants of Kohath inherited Taanach and Gath-Rimmon. Since the name “Aner” of our verse is not found anywhere else, and Taanach is mentioned in (Judges 1:27,5:19; 1 Kings 4:12), then reading the book. Joshua must be recognized as more correct. As for the second, in the book. Joshua must have made a mistake. The city of this name lay in the inheritance of the tribe of Dan and had just been named (Joshua 21:24). But also the name Bileam book. Chronicles should be replaced according to (Joshua 17:11) and (Judges 1:27) the name Ibleam.
1 Chronicles 6:71. The sons of Gershon from the tribe of the half-tribe of Manasseh were given Golan in Bashan and its suburbs, and Ashtaroth and its suburbs.
And in the book. Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 1:4) and Joshua (Joshua 13:12) Ashtaroth is called the capital of Og of Bashan. This city is mentioned with the name Ashterot-Karmaim in the book. Genesis (Gen.14:5). The name Joshua 21.27 Beeshtra is caused by an incorrect reading of the group of Hebrew letters בעשתרה: with the omission of the first letter, it can be read both Ashtarot and Beeshtra, depending on which vowels are substituted.
1 Chronicles 6:72. From the tribe of Issachar, Kedesh and its suburbs, Dabrath and its suburbs,
Instead of Kedesh y (Joshua 21:28), and equally (Joshua 19:20) - Kishion.
1 Chronicles 6:73. and Ramoth with its suburbs, and Anem with its suburbs;
Joshua in (Joshua 19:21) and (Joshua 21:29) this name is written Gen-Ganim “garden spring”. “Anem” of the book of Chronicles (“two sources”) is not found anywhere else.
1 Chronicles 6:75. and Hukok and its suburbs, and Rehob and its suburbs;
In a parallel place at (Joshua 21:31) stands Helkaf, but when counting the cities of the tribe of Assir (Joshua 19:34) the same as here, Hukok.
1 Chronicles 6:76. from the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its suburbs, and Hammon with its suburbs, and Kiriathaim with its suburbs.
In Joshua, Hammon is shown when counting the cities of the tribe of Assir (Joshua 19:28), and when counting the cities of Naphtali - Hammo-dor (Joshua 21:32). In (Joshua 21:32) instead of Kiriathaim there is Kartan. The meaning of both names is the same - “two cities”, and the difference is only in the form. Kartan is an ancient, obsolete, dual number, Kiriathaim is a later one.
1 Chronicles 6:77. And to the other sons of Merari, from the tribe of Zebulun, Rimmon and its suburbs, Tabor and its suburbs.
In comparison with (Joshua 21:34), two cities are missing in this verse: Jokneam and Cartha, and the other two have different names, Rimmon-Dimna, Tabor-Nagalal. The reading of Dimna is hardly correct, since according to the instructions of the book itself. Joshua, in the region of the tribe of Zebulun lay the city of Dimmon (Joshua 19:13), and not Dimnah. The name Nagalal, only in a slightly different form (Naglol), is mentioned in the book. Judges (Judges 1:30), as the name of the city given to the descendants of Zebulun. Reading a book Chronicles - Tabor, it is believed, arose from the fact that the author indicates, instead of the city, the area where it lay.
1 Chronicles 6:78. On the other side of the Jordan, opposite Jericho, on the east of the Jordan, from the tribe of Reuben they gave Bozhar in the wilderness and its suburbs, and Jaaz and its suburbs,
1 Chronicles 6:79. and Kedemoth with its suburbs, and Mephaath with its suburbs;
1 Chronicles 6:80. from the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead and its suburbs, and Mahanaim and its suburbs,
1 Chronicles 6:81. and Heshbon with its suburbs, and Jazer with its suburbs.
