Now the people, priests and authorities of the Jews hear the word of the Lord for the last time in the church. And it was all-encompassing; it embraced everything past, present and future. By asking about John, the Lord makes it clear that He is the true Messiah; the parable of the two sons suggests that the Jews will be rejected and pagans will be called in their place; with the parable of the vinedressers he tells them that destruction awaits the rejected; through the parable of the marriage of the king’s son, he teaches that even of those who came to Him, not all will be worthy, and there will be some whom it will be righteous to cast out into the outer darkness; with answers to questions about tribute to Caesar and about the first commandment, as well as with an accusatory speech, he defines the characteristic features of a saving life; finally, he especially predicts grief for Jerusalem to his disciples and reveals the secret of His second coming. It was enough just to listen to all this with attention in order to be convinced that He is the true Savior of the world - Christ, and to submit to His commandments and teachings. And to this day, reading the chapters of the Gospel about everything that happened on this day is the most effective means of reviving faith in the Lord, and, raising in a Christian the consciousness of what he should be and what to expect, kindling jealousy and showing himself to be confessing the Lord not only in language, but also in deed.
