(1 Thess. 2, 20–3, 8; Luke 11, 29–33) “The queen of the south will rise up in judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them” (Luke 11:31). For what? For indifference to the work being done by the Lord before their eyes. That queen, having heard about Solomon’s wisdom, came from afar to listen to him, but these men, having the Lord Himself in front of him, did not listen to Him, although it was obvious that He was higher than Solomon, “as the heavens are higher than the earth” (Is. 55:9). And the queen of the south condemns all those who are indifferent to the works of God, because the Lord is always and among us as clearly present in the gospel tales as he was then. Reading the Gospel, we have before the eyes of the Lord with all His wondrous deeds, for it is as sure as the testimony of our own eyes. Meanwhile, who listens to the Lord who is so imprinted on our souls? We have closed our eyes or turned them in the other direction, and that is why we do not see; and not seeing, we are not engaged in the affairs of the Lord. But this is not an excuse, but a reason for inattention, as criminal as the very thing that stems from it is criminal. The work of the Lord is our first task, that is, the salvation of the soul. We must heed what is from the Lord without regard to us, especially when it is all directed towards us, towards the organization of our essential work, the significance of which extends to all eternity?
