(1 Cor. 5:9–6:11; Matt. 13:54–58) The Nazarenes did not believe the word of the Lord because, living among them, He did not have in His external position an attractive lordship and representativeness that evoked involuntary respect. We know who He is, they said; It cannot be that there is anything extraordinary in Him. This, however, did not dispose the Lord to accept an impressive appearance; but He Himself all the time remained extremely simple in appearance, and the apostles later behaved the same way, and then all their true followers and imitators were the same. Why is this so? Because it is impossible to invent such external lightness that would fully correspond to the light of life in Christ Jesus. And it is recognized that it is better to keep the appearance of the latest price so that it does not block the inner one. He who has eyes, look straight at this latter, without stopping your attention on the first. St. ap. Paul put it this way: “We have this treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Cor. 4:7). If we were to look at the appearance of the faces that we now revere and call upon in our prayers, we would not believe our eyes: they were so simple. But even to this day, the one who learns what life in Christ Jesus is, abandons appearances and turns entirely inward. That is why the first naturally falls, and the last rises and grows. Even with many, it happens that no one notices this inner lordship, not even the person who possesses it. The evil eye of man; he is not shown what is truly good until it can harm him.
