Unmercenaries and Wonderworkers Cosmas and Damian · St Theodota, Mother of Cosmas and Damian

Евангелие от Луки

Machine translation from the original · Show original
Since many have already begun to tell stories about well-known past affairs between us, as former samovidets and servants of the Word betrayed us from the beginning, I also decided, having examined everything from the beginning reliably, to describe to you in order, venerable Theophilus, so that you may understand the solid foundation of the teaching in which you have been instructed. In the days of Herod, king of Judah, there was a certain priest named Zechariah, from the daylight of Abia, and his wife was from the family of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord blamelessly, and they had no children; since Elizabeth was barren, and both were already old in their days. Once, when he served in the rank of his order before God, according to the custom of the priesthood, it happened to him to burn incense upon entering the church of the Lord, and the whole multitude of people prayed outside during incense; The Angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right hand of the altar of incense. And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. The angel said to him: Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John; and you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; for he will be great before the Lord; and he will not drink wine or strong drink, and will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb; and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God; and he will go before Him with the spirit and power of Elijah, so that he may return the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous - to prepare for the Lord a perfect people. And Zechariah said to the angel: By what reason will I understand this? I am old, and my wife is old in her days. And answering the Angel said to him: I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and was sent with a word to you, to bring this good news to you; and behold, you will remain silent, and you will not be able to say a word, until the day when this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true in their own time. The people were waiting for Zechariah and were amazed that he was delaying in the church. When he came out, he could not say anything to them; and they realized that he had a vision in the church; and he explained to them by signs and remained silent. And when the days of his service were completed, he went to his house. After these days, Elizabeth his wife conceived, and hid herself for five months, and said: Thus did the Lord do unto me in these days, in which he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to the city of Galilee, whose name was Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a husband named Joseph, from the house of David; The name of the Virgin is Mariam. And he went to her and said: Rejoice, O Blessed One! The Lord is with You; Blessed are You among women. She, seeing him, was embarrassed by his words and thought that this was a greeting. And the Angel said to Her: Do not be afraid, Mariam; You have found favor with God; and behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a Son, and you will call His name Jesus; This one will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign in the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end. Mariam said to the Angel: How will this be when I don’t know my husband? And this is what the Angel said in response to Her: The Holy Spirit will come upon You, and the power of the Most High will overshadow You; by the same thing, the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God; behold, Thy dear Elizabeth also conceived a son in her old age, and she is already in her sixth month, called barren; for not a single word fails with God. And Miriam said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; Be unto me according to thy word. And the Angel departed from Her. In those days, Miriam arose and hurried to go to the mountainous country, to the city of Judah; and she came to Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greetings, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and crying out loudly, she said: Blessed are You among women, and blessed is the fruit of Your womb! and where do I get this, that the Mother of my Lord comes to me? and so, when the voice of Your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped with joy in my womb; and blessed is she who believed that what was spoken to her from the Lord would be accomplished. And Miriam said, My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoiced in God my Savior, that He looked upon the humility of His servant; for from now on all generations will call Me blessed; that the Mighty One has done great things for Me; and holy is His name; and His mercy endures throughout all generations of those who fear Him; He created the power with His arm; scattered those who were proud in their hearts; He has dethroned the mighty and exalted the humble; He filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away lean; He received His servant Israel, remembering his mercies, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever. Miriam stayed with her for three months and returned to her house. It was time for Elizabeth to give birth; and gave birth to a son. And those living around and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified His mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the baby, and began to call him by the name of his father, Zechariah. And answering this, his mother said: no; but call him John. They said to her: There is no one in your family who is called by that name. And they began to ask his father by signs what he would like to call him. And he demanded a tablet, he wrote: John will be his name. And everyone marveled. And immediately his mouth and his tongue were opened; and began to speak, blessing God. And there was fear on all those living around them; and throughout the land of Judea stories about all this were repeated. And all who heard it thought in their hearts, and said, “What will happen to this child?” And the hand of the Lord was with him. And Zechariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, that He hath visited and brought deliverance to His people, and raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as He declared by the mouth of His holy prophets from time immemorial, that will save us from our enemies and from the hand of all those who hate us; He showed mercy to our fathers and will remember His holy covenant, the oath which he swore to Abraham our father to bestow upon us, without fear, delivered from the hand of our enemies, to serve Him with holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life. And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, to give the understanding of salvation to His people for the remission of their sins, for the sake of mercy and mercy of our God, that the East from above visited us, to enlighten those sitting in the darkness and shadow of death, to guide our feet on the path of peace. The youth grew and became stronger in spirit; and he was in the wilderness until the day of his appearing to Israel. In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a command to rewrite the entire universe. This census was the first, and during the reign of Quirinius Syria. And everyone went to fit in, each to his own city. Joseph also came from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was from the house and family of David, to sign up with Mary, his betrothed wife, who is not idle. And when they were there, the time came for Her to give birth, and she gave birth to Her firstborn Son and, having entwined Him, laid Him in a manger, since there was no place for them in the monastery (inn). There were shepherds in the same country, and they kept watch over their flock that night. And behold, the Angel of the Lord stood between them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were afraid with great fear. And the Angel said to them: Do not be afraid; I bring you good news of great joy that will come to all people; Behold, today a Savior has been born to you - He is Christ the Lord - in the city of David; and behold a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly a multitude of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and crying: glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And when the Angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to each other: Let us go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us. And they came quickly and found Miriam and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. When they saw it, they told what had been announced to them about this Child. And all who heard were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Miriam kept all these words, writing them in Her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for everything that they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. And when the eight days were completed for His circumcision, they called His name Jesus, which was called by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled; They brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him before the Lord, as it is written in the law of the Lord, that every male child who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord (Ex. 13:2); and sacrifice, according to the law of the Lord, two turtle doves, or two chicks of pigeons. And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. And this man was righteous and pious, seeking the joy of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And he was told by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he saw Christ the Lord. And he came, led by the spirit, to church; and when the parents brought the Child Jesus, they performed upon Him according to the lawful custom, he took Him in his arms and blessed God, and said: Now you are releasing Your servant, O Master, according to Your word, in peace; for mine eyes have seen Your salvation, what You have prepared before all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel. Joseph and His Mother marveled at what was said about Him. And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother: Behold, this One is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel and for a sign of discord, and a weapon will pierce your very soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And Hannah the prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, was of the tribe of Asher; she grew old in many years, having lived with her husband for seven years from her girlhood, Having been a widow for eighty-four years, she did not leave the church, serving God day and night with fasting and prayers. And at that hour she came up, confessed the Lord and spoke about Him to everyone who was looking for deliverance in Jerusalem. And when everything was done according to the law of the Lord; They returned to Galilee, to their city of Nazareth. The baby grew and became stronger in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him. Every year His parents went to Jerusalem on the feast of Passover. And when He was twelve years old, they came, according to custom, to Jerusalem for the feast; and after the feast days were completed, when they returned, the Child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and Joseph and His mother did not see it, but they thought that He was going with others; having walked a day's journey, they began to look for Him among their relatives and friends; and not finding Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. And after three days they found Him in the church, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and questioning them; and all who heard Him were horrified at His understanding and answers. And when they saw Him, they were surprised; and His Mother said to Him: Child! what have you done to us? Behold, Your father and I have been looking for You with great sorrow. And he said to them: Why did you seek Me? or did you not know that it is worthy for Me to be in what is the work of My Father? But they did not understand the words that He spoke to them. And He went with them and came to Nazareth; and was in obedience to them. And His Mother kept all these words in Her heart. Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and grace with God and men. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor in Judea, Herod was tetrarch in Galilee, Philip his brother was tetrarch in Ituraea and the Trachonite country, and Lysanias was tetrarch in Abilene, under the high priests Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, Zechariah's son, in the wilderness. And he came to preach throughout the country of Jordan the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, where it is said: the voice of one crying in the wilderness; prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths right; every wilderness will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be humbled, and the crooked will become straight and the sharp paths smooth; and all flesh will see the salvation of God (Is. 40:3–5). To the people who came to be baptized by him, he said this: brood of vipers! who told you to flee from the wrath to come? Produce fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say within yourself: our father Abraham; I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones. Already the ax lies at the root of the tree; Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. And the people asked him: what should we do? And answering them, he said: He who has two coats, let him give to the poor; and whoever has food, let him do likewise. Publicans also came to be baptized by him, and said: teacher! what should we do? And he said to them: Do not demand anything more than what is commanded you. The soldiers also asked him: what should we do? And he said to them: Do not oppress anyone, do not slander anyone, and be content with your salary. When the people were in hope, and everyone thought in their hearts about John, was he not the Christ? – John answered everyone this way: I baptize you with water, but He who strengthens me is coming, but I am not worthy to untie the thong of His boot; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire; and the shovel is in His hand, and He will clear His threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into His barn, and will burn the chaff with unquenchable fire. He preached the gospel to people in many other ways as well. Herod the tetrarch, rebuked by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil that Herod had done, He also added this evil: he imprisoned John. And it came to pass: when all the people were baptized, and Jesus was baptized and prayed, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended bodily like a dove on Him, and a voice came from heaven, saying: You are My beloved Son; My favor is in You. Such was Jesus in His undertaking, about thirty years old, and He was, as they thought, the son of Joseph, Heli, Matfatov, Leviin, Melkhiev, Iannaev, Josephov, Mattafiev, Amosov, Naumov, Eslimov, Naggeev, Maafov, Mattafiev, Semeiev, Josephov, Judin, Ioannanov, Risaev, Zerubbavelev, Salafielev, Niriev, Melkhiev, Addiev, Kosamov, Elmodamov, Irov, Josiev, Eliezerov, Iorimov, Matfatov, Leviin, Simeonov, Judin, Josephov, Ionanov, Eliakimov, Melfaev, Mainanov, Mattafaev, Nafanov, Davidov, Jesseev, Obedov, Boazov, Salmonov, Nassonov, Aminadav, Aramov, Esromov, Faresov, Judin, Jacoblev, Isaacov, Abrahamov, Farin, Nahorov, Serukhov, Ragavov, Falekov, Everov, Salin, Cainanov, Arfaksadov, Simov, Noev, Lamekhov, Methuselah, Enoch, Jared, Maleleel, Cain, Enosov, Sifov, Adamov, God. Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, We were tempted by the devil for forty days, and in those days I ate nothing; After they had passed, he finally became hungry. And the devil said to Him: If You are the Son of God, command this stone that it may be bread. And Jesus answered him: It is written that man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word of God (Deut. 8:3). And taking Him up to a high mountain, He showed Him all the kingdoms of the universe in a moment of time, and the devil said to Him: I will give you all this power and their glory; for she has been given to me, and I give her to whomever I want; and when You worship me, everything will be Yours. And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get thee away from Me, Satan; It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve Him alone (Deut. 6:13). And he led Him to Jerusalem, and placed Him on the pinnacle of the church, and said to Him: If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written: He will command His angels concerning You, to keep You; and they will bear You up in their hands, lest You dash Your foot against a stone (Ps. 91:11-12). And Jesus answered him: It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God (Deut. 6:16). And having finished all the temptation, the devil departed from Him for the time being. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee; and fame spread throughout the whole country about Him. And He taught in their synagogues; we glorify them all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and, according to His custom, entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. And they gave Him the book of Isaiah the prophet; and He, unfolding the book, found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; and for this reason He anointed Me, to bring good news to the poor, He sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach liberation to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the brokenhearted into joy, it is acceptable to preach the year of the Lord (Isa. 61:1-2). And he folded the book and gave it to the servant, and sat down; and everyone in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on Him. And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And they all bore witness to Him in agreement, and marveled at the words of grace that proceeded from His mouth, and said, Is not this the son of Joseph? And he said to them, “You will truly tell Me this parable: Physician, heal yourself; what we heard happened in Capernaum, do it here in your own country. Truly I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country. In truth I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were closed for three years and six months, so that there was a great famine throughout the whole earth; and Elijah was not sent to any of them, except to Zarephath of Sidon, to a widow wife. And there were many lepers in Israel under Elisha the prophet, and not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian. And all who heard this were filled with rage in the synagogue, and getting up, they drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the cliff of the mountain on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down, but He passed through the midst of them and left. And he came to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath. And they marveled at His teaching; for His word was with authority. And there was a man in the synagogue who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out loudly: leave; What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? You came to destroy us; I know You, who You are, the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked Him, saying: Be silent and come out of him. And the demon threw him into Wednesday and left him without harming him in any way. And horror fell upon them all, and they reasoned with one another, saying, “What is this word that He commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out?” And the rumor about Him spread throughout all parts of that country. Leaving the synagogue, He entered the house of Simon; Simonov's mother-in-law was possessed by a strong fever; and they prayed to Him for her. And standing over her, he forbade the heat; and left her. And immediately she stood up and served them. And at sunset, everyone who was sick with various ailments brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on each of them and healed them. Demons also came out from many and said with a cry: You are the Christ, the Son of God. But He, forbidding, did not allow them to say that they knew in Him the real Christ Himself. When the day came, he went from there to a deserted place, and the people sought Him and, having come to Him, they restrained Him so that He would not leave them. But He said to them: It is fitting for Me to preach the Kingdom of God to other cities too! for this is why I was sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. It happened when the people crowded around Him to hear the word of God, and He stood by the lake of Gennesaret, He saw two ships near the shore on the lake; and the fishermen, leaving them, washed their nets. And he entered one ship - and that was Simonov - and asked him to sail a little from the shore, and sat down and taught the people from the ship. When he stopped talking, he said to Simon: Sail out into the deep, and let down your nets to catch. Answering Simon said to Him: Mentor! We worked all night and didn’t catch anything; But at Your word I will let down the net. And, casting out, they captured a great multitude of fish; even their network was broken. And they beckoned to the comrades who were in the other ship to come help them; and they came and filled both ships, so that they began to sink. Seeing this, Simon Peter fell at the knees of Jesus and said: get away from me, Lord! I am a sinful person. For horror seized him and all who were with him because of this fishing of fish that they caught; also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's companions. And Jesus said to Simon: Do not be afraid; From now on you will be a fisher of men. And they brought both ships to the ground, and left everything, and followed Him. And when Jesus was in one of the cities. A man covered with leprosy, seeing Jesus, fell on his face, begging Him and saying: Lord! if you want, you can cleanse me. And he stretched out his hand, touched him and said: I want you to be clean. And immediately the leprosy left him. And he ordered him not to tell anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them. But even more so, the rumor about Him spread, and many people flocked to hear Him and seek healing from Him for their ailments. He went to deserted places and prayed. And one day, while He was teaching, and the Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting here, who had come from all the places of Galilee, and Judea, and from Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord appeared in healings, behold, people brought a paralytic man on a bed, and they tried to carry him in and lay him before Him, and, not finding where to carry him, behind the multitude of people, they climbed onto the roof, and through the tiles they lowered him with the bed into the middle before Jesus. And seeing their faith, he said to him: O man, your sins are forgiven you. and the scribes and Pharisees began to reason, saying: Who is this? He speaks blasphemy! who can forgive sins except God alone? Having understood their thoughts, Jesus answered and said to them, “What are you thinking in your hearts?” What is more convenient to say: your sins are forgiven you? or should I say: get up and walk? But let it be known to you that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins. He said to the paralytic: I say to you, arise, take up your bed and go to your house. And immediately he stood up before them, took what he was lying on, and went to his house, glorifying God. And horror seized everyone; and they glorified God and, filled with fear, said: We have seen glorious deeds today. After this Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting on the tollhouse 14 and said to him, “Follow Me.” And he, leaving everything, stood up and followed Him. And Levi made him a great feast in his house; and there were many publicans and others reclining with them. The scribes and Pharisees murmured against Him and said to His disciples: Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? Jesus answered and said to them: Those who are healthy do not require a doctor, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. They said to Him: Just as John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, so do the Pharisees; Do yours eat and drink? And He said to them: Can you force the wedding guests to fast while the groom is with them? but the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; and then they fast on those days. He also told them a parable: no one puts the patch of new clothing on old clothes; otherwise the new one will be torn apart, and the patch from the new one will not fit the old one. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the bottle and be poured out, and the bottles will perish; New wine must be poured into new wineskins; and both will be observed. And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately wants new one: they say that the old one is better. It happened that on the second and first Saturday He passed through a sown field, and His disciples plucked the ears of corn and ate them, rubbing them with their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what you should not do on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered them: Have you not read what David did when he and those with him were hungry? How did he enter the house of God, and take the showbread, which was unworthy for anyone to eat except the priests, and eat it, and give it to those with him? And he said to them: Master, Son of man, and the Sabbath. It happened on another Saturday that He entered the synagogue and taught. And there was a man there whose gums were dry. And the scribes and Pharisees looked to see if He would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find something to reproach Him with. But He saw their thoughts, and said to the man who had a withered hand: get up and step into the middle. And he stood up and spoke. And Jesus said to them: I ask you, what is worthy to do on the Sabbath? to do good or to do evil, to save a soul or to destroy? They were silent. And looking at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so; and his hand was established as sound as the other. They were filled with madness and talked among themselves about what they should do with Jesus. In those days He went up the mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in God’s prayer. And when the day came, he called his disciples, and chose twelve of them, whom he called apostles: Simon, and named him Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot, Judas Jacob and Judas Iscariot - he also became a traitor. And he went down with them and stood on a level place, and all his disciples, and a great multitude from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the seaside region of Tire and Sidon, who came to listen to Him and to be healed of their ailments, and those suffering from unclean spirits, and were healed. And all the people sought to touch Him; for power came from Him and healed everyone. And He lifted His eyes to His disciples and said: Blessed are the poor in spirit; for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are those who hunger now; for you will be satisfied. Blessed are those who mourn now; for you will laugh. Blessed will you be when people hate you, and excommunicate you, and revile you, and bring your name to blasphemy, for the sake of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap; behold, your reward is great in heaven; their fathers did the same with the prophets. But woe to you, rich people! you have already received your consolation. Woe to you who are now satiated! for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now! for you will mourn and mourn. Woe to you when all men speak good things about you, for their fathers did the same to the false prophets. But I say to you who hear: love your enemies; Do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you and pray for those who offend you. To the one who hits you on the cheek, offer the other one too; and to him who takes away your robe, do not rebuke him even to swear. Give to everyone who asks you, and do not demand yours from anyone who asks. And as you want people to do to you, do so to them. And if you love those who love you, what gratitude do you have for that? for sinners also love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what gratitude do you have for that? for sinners also do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what gratitude are you for that? for even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back. But you love your enemies, and do good, and lend, without tea, and your reward will be many, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is good to the ungrateful and the wicked. Therefore, be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Judge not, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, lest you be condemned; let go, and they will let you go. Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, shaken down, pressed together, and running over, will be given into your bosom; For with the same measure you use, it will be measured back to you. He also told them a parable: Can a blind man lead a blind man? won't they both fall into the pit? A student is not greater than his teacher, but once he is perfected, everyone will be like his teacher. Why do you see the bitches in your brother's eye, but do not smell the log in your eye? Or how can you say to your brother: brother! Let me take the knots out of your eye, but don’t you see the log in your eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your eye, and then you will see how to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. There is no good tree that bears bad fruit; There is not a bad tree that bears good fruit. For every tree is known by its fruit; Figs are not gathered from thorns, and grapes are not plucked from bushes. A good man brings forth good things from the good treasure of his heart; and an evil man brings forth evil from the evil treasure of his heart; out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Why do you call Me: Lord! God! and do not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will tell you who he is like: like a man building a house; dug, and deepened, and laid the foundation on the rock; and when the flood happened and the river came to that house, it could not shake it, because it was founded on rock. But whoever hears and does not echo is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; when the river approached it, it immediately collapsed; and great was the destruction of that house. When He had finished all His speech in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum. A certain centurion's slave was sick and dying, and that slave was dear to him. When he heard about Jesus, he sent the elders of the Jews to Him, asking him to come and save his servant. And they came to Jesus and besought Him earnestly, saying that he is worthy that You should do this to him, for he loves our people and built us a synagogue. Jesus went with them, and when he was already not far from home, the centurion sent his friends to Him, saying to Him: Do not work, Lord! I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; That’s why I didn’t consider myself worthy to come to You; but speak the word, and my child will be healed. For I am a man under authority, and I have soldiers under my authority, and I say to one: go, and he goes; and to another: come, and he comes; and to my servant: Do this, and he will do it. Hearing this, Jesus marveled at him and, turning, said to the people following Him: I tell you that even in Israel I have not found such faith. Returning to the house, the messengers found the sick slave healed. After this Jesus went to a city called Nain; and with Him went many of His disciples and a great multitude. When he approached the city gates, they carried out the dead man, his mother’s only begotten son, and she was a widow; and many people from the city were with her. And seeing her, the Lord had mercy on her and said to her: do not cry. And he came up and touched the bed; those who wear steel; and said: young man! I tell you, get up. And the dead man sat down and began to speak; and Jesus gave him to his mother. And everyone was seized with fear, and they glorified God, saying: A great prophet has arisen among us, and God has visited His people. And this word about Him spread throughout all Judea and throughout the whole country. And his disciples told John about all this. And calling two of his disciples, John sent to Jesus, asking: Are you the one who should come, or do we expect something else? And having come to Him, those men said: John the Baptist has sent us to You to ask: Are You the one who should come, or do we expect something else? And at that hour He healed many from illnesses and ulcers and from evil spirits, and gave sight to many blind people. And Jesus answered them: Go, tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news preached to them; and blessed is he who is not offended because of Me! After the departure of John’s disciples, he began to speak to the people about John: “What did you go into the wilderness to see?” Is it a cane shaken by the wind? What did you go to see? Is it a man, dressed in soft clothes? But those who live luxuriously and luxuriously are at the royal courts. What did you go to see? a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I send My angel before You to prepare Your way before You (Mal.3:1). And I say to you, among those born of wives there is no greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. And all the people who heard and the publicans revealed the righteousness of God, being baptized with the baptism of John; and the Pharisees and lawyers rejected God’s counsel for themselves by not being baptized by it. And the Lord said: To whom will I liken this generation of men? and who are they like? They are like children who sit in the market places and call each other and say: we played for you, and you did not dance; they sang lamentable songs to you, and you did not cry. For John the Baptist came, neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and say: he has a devil. The Son of Man came: he eats and drinks; and say: This man eats and drinks wine, a friend of publicans and sinners. And wisdom was justified in all her children. One of the Pharisees asked Him to dine with Him, and He... He entered the house of the Pharisees and lay down. And behold, a woman from this city, reputed to be a sinner, having learned that He was reclining in the house of the Pharisees, brought alabaster of myrrh, and standing behind Him at His feet, she wept, and began to water His feet with tears and wipe His hair with the hair of her head, and kissed His feet and anointed them with myrrh. Seeing this, the Pharisee who invited Him said within himself: if He were a prophet, he would know who and what kind of wife was touching Him: she is a sinner. And answering this, Jesus said to him: Simon! I have something to tell you. He says: tell me, Teacher. Jesus said: A certain creditor had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty; but since they had nothing to pay with, he forgave them both. Tell me, which of them will love him more? Simon answered: I think the one who has forgiven more. He said to him: you have judged rightly. And turning to his wife, he said to Simon: Do you see this woman? I came to your house, and you did not give me water for my feet; and she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You didn't give me a kiss; and she, since I came, has not stopped kissing My feet. You did not anoint My head with oil; and she anointed My feet with myrrh. And for this reason I will tell you: her many sins are forgiven because she loved much; and those who are left with little love less. He said to her: Your sins are forgiven. And those reclining with Him began to say to themselves: Who is this, who also forgives sins? He said to his wife, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace. After this He passed through cities and villages, preaching and preaching the good news of the Kingdom of God, and the twelve with Him, and a certain wife, whom he healed of evil spirits and illnesses: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons came out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who served Him from her substance. When a multitude of people had gathered, and from all the cities they came to Him; began to tell a parable: the sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the way and was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it; and some fell on a stone and, having vegetated, dried up, for it had no moisture; and some fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew and choked them; and others fell on good soil and, having vegetated, bore fruit a hundredfold. Having said this, he exclaimed: whoever has ears to hear, let him hear! His disciples asked Him: What does this parable mean? He said: to you it has been given to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God, but to others in parables, so that seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not understand. This is what this parable means: the seed is the word of God; what fell along the way, these are the ones who heard, and then the devil comes and takes the word out of their hearts, so that they would not be saved by believing; and as for the stones, those who have heard, when they receive the word with joy, but have no root, and believe for a while, but fall away during adversity; and what fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, but, living among the worries and riches and pleasures of life, they are suppressed and do not produce fruit; and on the good earth, those who, having heard the word, keep it with a kind and good heart and produce fruit in patience. (Having said this, he exclaimed: whoever has ears to hear, let him hear!) No one, having lit a candle, covers it with a vessel, or places it under a bed, but places it on a candlestick, so that those who enter can see the light. There is nothing secret that would not appear, and nothing hidden that would not become known and would not come to light. Be careful how you listen, for whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him. And His Mother and His brothers came to Him; and they could not approach Him because of the people. And they told Him: Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and want to see you. He answered and said to them: My mother and my brothers are the ones who hear the word of God and do it. And it happened one day that He and His disciples entered the ship and said to them: Let us cross to the other side of the lake. And off we went. During the journey He fell asleep. And a windy storm arose on the lake, and they were flooded, and they were in trouble. And coming up, they woke Him up and said: Master! Mentor! we die. And He stood up and rebuked the wind and the disturbance of the water; and everything calmed down, and there was silence. Then he said to them: Where is your faith? And they feared and marveled, and said to one another, “Who is this who commands the winds and the waters, and they listen to Him?” And they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, on the other side opposite Galilee. When He came out to earth; He was met by a certain man from the city, possessed by demons for a long time; he did not wear clothes, and did not live in a house, but in coffins. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him and said with a loud voice: What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I pray to You, do not torment me. For Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man; for a long time he tormented him, and they bound him with iron bonds and shackles, protecting him; but he broke the bonds, and was driven by a demon through the desert. Jesus asked him: What is your name? He said: legion; This means that many demons have entered into him. And they prayed to Jesus not to command them to go into the abyss. There was a large herd of pigs grazing there on the mountain, and they prayed to Him to command them to enter into them. And he commanded. And the demons came out of the man and entered into the pigs; and the herd rushed from the shore into the lake and drowned. When those who were tending the pigs saw it, they ran and proclaimed it in the city and in the villages. And the people came out to see what had happened; came to Jesus and found a man from whom the demons had come out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in good spirits; and were horrified. Those who saw them told them how the demoniac was healed. And all the people of the Gadarene country prayed to Him to depart from them; for they were overcome with great fear. He entered the ship and returned. And the man from whom the demons had come out prayed to Him to be with Him; but Jesus sent him away, saying: return to your house and tell what God has done for you. And he went and preached throughout the whole city what Jesus had done for him. When Jesus returned; The people received Him, for everyone was waiting for Him. And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was the ruler of the synagogue; and, falling at the feet of Jesus, asked Him to come into his house; He had an only-begotten daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. As He walked, the people crowded around Him. And the wife, who suffered from bleeding for twelve years, spent all her property on doctors, but not one was able to heal her, - she, coming up from behind, touched the hem of His robe; and immediately the flow of her blood stopped. And Jesus said, Who touched Me? And as everyone denied, Peter and those who were with Him said: Mentor! the people surround you and crowd you in; and You say: who touched Me? But Jesus said: someone touched Me: I felt power coming out of Me. And seeing that the wife had not hidden herself, she came up with trembling and, falling down before Him, told Him in front of all the people how guilty she had touched Him, and how she was immediately healed. And He said to her: dare, daughter! your faith has saved you; go out into the world. While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue and said to him: Your daughter is dead; don't bother the Teacher. But after hearing that. Jesus answered him: Do not be afraid, just believe, and you will be saved. Having come to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter, except Peter and John and James, and the father of the girl, and the mother. Everyone cried and sobbed for her; but He said: Weep not; She is not dead, but she is sleeping. And they laughed at Him, knowing that she had died. He, sending everyone out and taking her by the hand, exclaimed: young lady, arise! And her spirit returned, and she rose again immediately; and ordered to give her something to eat. And her parents marveled. He ordered them not to tell anyone about their ex. Having called the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to heal ailments; and sent them to preach the Kingdom of God and heal the sick. And he said to them: Take nothing on the way: neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor silver, and do not have two clothes; and whatever house you enter, stay there, and go from there. And if someone does not accept you; When you leave that city, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them. They went and went through the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere. Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that came from Him, and was perplexed: for others said that John had risen from the dead; others that Elijah appeared, and others that the prophet, one of the ancients, was resurrected. And Herod said: I have beheaded John; Who is this, about whom I hear this? and sought to see Him. And when they returned, the Apostles told Him what they had done; and having seen them, he went away alone to a deserted place, near a city called Bethsaida. But the people, having learned, followed Him; and having received them, he began to speak to them about the Kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. The day began to decline. And the twelve came to Him and said to Him: Let the people go, let them go to the surrounding villages to seek shelter and food; because we are in an empty place here. But He said to them: Give them something to eat. They said: We do not have much, only five loaves and two fish; Should we go buy food for all these people? For there were about five thousand people. But He said to His disciples: Seat them in rows of fifty. And they did so, and seated everyone. He, having received five loaves and two fish and looking up to heaven, blessed them and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. And they all ate and were filled; and twelve koshnits took up the pieces that remained from them. And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He asked them: Who do people say that I am? They answered: for John the Baptist, and others for Elijah; others that a certain prophet from the ancients has risen. And He says: Who do you think I am? And Peter answering said to Him: For the Christ of God. But He forbade them not to tell this to anyone, saying that it was fitting for the Son of Man to suffer much, and to be mocked by the elders and the high priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and to rise on the third day. To all he said: If anyone wants to follow Me, let him deny himself; and will take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his soul will destroy it; but whoever loses his soul for My sake will save it. For what is it good for a person to gain the whole world, but destroy or damage himself? And whoever is ashamed of Me and My words; of whom the Son of man will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father and the holy Angels. I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God. And eight days after these words, He took Peter and John and James and went up to the mountain to pray. And when He prayed, the appearance of His face became different, and His robe was white and shining. And behold, two men were talking with Him - and they were Moses and Elijah, appearing in glory, spoke of His exodus, which He was about to accomplish to Jerusalem. Peter and those with him were burdened with sleep; and when they awoke, they saw His glory, and both men standing with Him. And when they left Him, Peter said to Jesus: Master! It’s good for us to be here; Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He didn't know what he was saying. As he spoke thus, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them; and they were afraid when they entered the cloud. And there came a voice from the cloud, saying: This is My Beloved Son: Hear ye Him. And when this voice came, Jesus was left alone. But they kept silent and did not tell anyone in those days about what they saw. The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a multitude of people met Him. And then one of the people cried out: Teacher! I pray to You, look upon my son; he is my only begotten; but his spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams and shakes all over with foam, and barely retreats from him, exhausting him; and I prayed to Thy disciples to drive him out; and they couldn’t. Jesus answered him and said: O faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you and endure you? Bring me your son here. While he was still walking, a demon overthrew him and shook him; but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him to his father. And everyone marveled at the greatness of God. When everyone marveled at all that Jesus did; He said to His disciples: put these words in your ears: The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of man. But they did not understand this word, and it was hidden from them, so that they would not comprehend it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this word. but a thought arose in their minds as to which of them would be the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, took the child and set him before Him, and he said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for he who is least among you is great. John answered Him, saying: Mentor! We saw that one man casts out demons in Your name, and we forbade him, because he did not follow us. Jesus said to him: Do not forbid; for whoever is not against you is for you. When the days of His ascension from the world were completed, He turned His face to depart for Jerusalem, and He sent messengers before Him; and they went out and entered the Samaritan village to prepare for Him; but they did not receive Him there, for His face was turned towards Jerusalem. Seeing this, His disciples James and John said: Lord! Do you want, say, fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah created? But He turned and rebuked them and said: You do not know what kind of spirit you are; for the Son of man did not come to destroy the souls of men, but to save. And they went to another village. It happened that while they were on their way, someone said to Him: Lord! I will follow You wherever You go. And Jesus said to him: Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; The Son of Man has no place to lay his head. And he said to another: follow me. He said: Lord! commanded me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said to him: Let the dead bury their dead; You go and proclaim the Kingdom of God. And the other said: I will follow You, Lord! but first they told me to say goodbye to my family. But Jesus said to him, “No one puts his hand to the plow and looks back and is ruled in the kingdom of God.” After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them two by two before Him into every city and place where He Himself wanted to go, and he said to them: The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest, that he may bring forth laborers into his harvest. Go; Behold, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not carry with you a vagina, a bag, or boots, and do not greet anyone on the way. Whatever house you enter; First say: Peace to this house. And if the son of peace be there; Your peace will rest on him; and if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, eat and drink what they have: for the worker is worthy of his wages; don't move from house to house. And when you come to some city, and they receive you; eat what is offered to you; and heal the sick who are in it, and say to them: The kingdom of God has come upon you. And in whatever city you enter, and they do not accept you, when you come to the crossroads, say: and we shake off the dust that clings to us from your city for you; but know that the Kingdom of God has come upon you. I tell you that on that day it will be more tolerable for the Sodomites than for that city. Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! If the powers that were in you had been manifested in Tire and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes; but it will be more tolerable for Tire and Sidon in judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, who ascended to heaven, will be brought down to hell. He who listens to you listens to Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me; and whoever rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me. The seventy returned with joy and said: Lord! and the demons obey us in Thy name. He said to them: I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning; Behold, I give you power to tread on the serpent and the scorpion and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will harm you; but do not rejoice that the spirits obey you; Rejoice that your names are written in heaven. At that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit and said: I confess to You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes. Hey, Father! Such was my favor before You. And turning to the disciples, he said: everything has been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and to whom the Son wants to reveal. And turning to the disciples alone, he said to them: Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings longed to see what you see and did not see, and to hear what you hear and did not hear. And so, a certain lawyer stood up, tempting Him, and said: Teacher! What must I do to inherit eternal life? He said to him, “What is written in the law?” how do you read? He answered and said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. Jesus said to him: You answered rightly; do this, and you will live. But he, although he had justified himself, said to Jesus: “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus answered this way: a certain man was walking from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him naked and, having wounded him, they left, leaving him barely alive. By chance, a certain priest was walking along that path and, seeing him, passed by. Likewise, the Levite, being in that place, came up and looked and passed by. A Samaritan, passing by, found him and, seeing him, took pity; and proceeding to bandage his wounds, pouring in oil and wine; and, putting him on his donkey, brought him to the inn, and took care of him; and in the morning, as he was leaving, he took out two pieces of silver, gave them to the innkeeper and said to him: take care of him; and if you spend anything extra, when I return, I will give it to you. Which of those three do you think was a neighbor to the one who became a robber? He said: He showed kindness to him. And Jesus said to him: Go and do the same. As he walked, He entered a certain village, and a certain wife named Martha received Him into her house. And she had a sister named Maria; She, sitting at the feet of Jesus, listened to His word. Martha took a lot of trouble about the treat and, approaching, said: Lord! Don't you see that my sister left me alone to serve? tell her to help me. In response, Jesus said to her: Martha, Martha! you care and fuss about a lot of things, but there is only one thing that is needed; Mary chose the good part, and it will not be taken away from her. It happened that He was praying in a certain place, and when He finished, one of His disciples said to Him: Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. And He said to them: when you pray, say: Our Father who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done as it is in heaven and on earth; Give us our daily bread every day; and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. And he said to them: whoever of you has a friend will come to him at midnight and say to him: friend! lend me three loaves of bread; for my friend has come to me from the path, and there is nothing to offer him. And he will answer him from within: don’t bother me, the doors are already locked, and my children are with me on the bed; and I can’t get up and give it to you. If, I tell you, he does not get up and give him because he is his friend; then for his persistence, standing up, he will give him what he asks. And I will tell you: ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you; For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Which father among you, when his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? or, when there are fish, will he give him a snake instead of a fish? or, when he asks for an egg, will he give him a scorpion? If you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children; much more will the Father who is in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. He once cast out a demon who was dumb, and when the demon came out, the dumb one spoke, and people were amazed. And some of them said, “By the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons, He casts out demons.” And others, tempting, waited from Him for a sign from heaven. But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: every kingdom divided against itself will be desolate, and house divided against house will fall. If Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? How then do you say that I cast out demons by the power of Beelzebub? And if about Beelzebub I cast out demons; then by whom are your sons driving them out? Therefore they will be your judges. If by the finger of God I cast out demons; then the Kingdom of God has surely come to you. When a strong man guards his court armed, then his property is in peace; when someone stronger than him attacks and defeats him, he will take his weapon, which he hoped for, and divide his spoils. He who is not with Me is against Me; and whoever does not gather with Me scatters. And when the unclean spirit leaves a person; He passes through waterless places, looking for peace, and, not finding it, he says: I will return to my house from where I came. And when he came, he found it swept and put away. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter and live there. And the last thing is worse for that person than the first. When He spoke thus, a certain woman, raising her voice from among the people, said to Him: Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that nourished You! He said: Blessed are also those who hear the word of God and keep it. When the people began to gather, He began to say: This generation is wicked, seeking a sign, and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah; For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the south will rise up in judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them; she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and lo, there is more than Solomon. The Ninevites will rise up in judgment with this generation and condemn it; they repented through Jonah's preaching; and behold, more than Jonah is here. No one, having lit a candle, puts it under a cover, nor under a bushel, but on a candlestick, so that those who enter may see the light. The lamp of the body is the eye; So, if your eye is clear, then your whole body will be bright; and if you are deceitful, then your body is dark; Take heed: the light that is in you is not darkness? If your body is all light, and there is no dark part in it; everything will be light, as the lamp illuminates you with its radiance. While He was speaking, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. And he came and lay down. The Pharisee marveled, seeing that He had not washed before dinner. But the Lord said to him: “Today you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cups and dishes; but your inner self is full of robbery and deceit. Crazy! He who created the external, did not He also create the internal? It is better to give alms from your property, and everything will be clean for you. But woe to you Pharisees, because you tithe mint, rue, and all kinds of herbs, and despise the judgment and love of God; it was fitting to do this, and not to abandon it. Woe to you Pharisees, because you love presiding in the synagogues and bowing in the marketplaces. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you are like hidden tombs over which men walk unawares. Answering, one of the lawyers said to Him: Teacher! By saying this, you annoy us too. He said: “Woe to you lawyers too, because you impose unbearable burdens on people, but you yourself do not touch the burdens with a single finger.” Woe to you, for you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers beat them up; Thus bear witness and delight in the works of your fathers, for they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. For this reason, the wisdom of God said: I will send prophets and apostles to them, and some of them will be killed, and others will be expelled; May the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, be required from this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who died between the altar and the church. She, I tell you, will be required of this generation. Woe to you lawyers, because you have taken the key of understanding; they themselves did not enter, and those who entered were forbidden. When He spoke thus to them, the scribes and Pharisees began to fiercely attack Him, pestering Him with many questions, lying in wait for Him and trying to catch something from His mouth in order to accuse Him. When thousands of people had gathered, so that they crowded each other, He first began to say to His disciples: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, that is, hypocrisy. There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing secret that will not be known; Therefore, what you said in the darkness will be heard in the light; and what was spoken in the ear in the house will be proclaimed from the housetop. I say to you, My friends: do not be afraid of those who kill the body and then are unable to do anything more; but I will tell you whom you should fear, fear the one who has the power, after killing, to throw into the fiery wilds; to her, I tell you, be afraid of him. Aren't five birds sold for two pennies? and not a single one of them is forgotten by God. And all the hair on your head is gone. Do not be afraid, you are better than many birds. I tell you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of man will confess him before the angels of God; and whoever denies Me before men; will be rejected before the angels of God. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of man will be forsaken; and whoever speaks blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be left with him. When they bring you to the councils, to the authorities and principalities, do not worry about how or what to answer, or what to say; for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that hour what is proper to say. One of the people said to Him: Teacher! tell my brother to share the property with me. He said to him: Who made Me to judge or to divide you? And he also said to them: Beware, beware of covetousness; for even in abundance no one’s life depends on his possessions. He also told them a parable: a certain rich man’s field was born; and I thought to myself: what should I do if I have nowhere to gather all my fruits? And he said: This is what I will do; I will destroy my barns and build a greater one, and there I will gather all my grain and all my goods, and I will say to my soul: soul! You have a lot of good things for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him: crazy! this night your soul will be demanded of you; and who will get everything that you have prepared? Such is he who gathers for himself and does not grow rich in God. He said to His disciples: For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your soul, what you eat, nor about your body, what you put on; the soul is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. Look at the ravens: they neither sow nor reap; They have neither storehouses nor granaries, and God feeds them; How much better are you than the birds? And which of you, through his care, can add even one cubit to his height? If you can’t do even a little; Why do you worry about other things? Look at the lilies as they grow; They neither toil nor spin; But I tell you that Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. If the grass is in the field, existing today and swept into the oven tomorrow, God dresses it like this; then how much more so than you, you of little faith. And don't look for what to eat or what to drink, and don't worry; The people of this world are looking for all this, and your Father knows that you need all this; rather, seek the Kingdom of God, and then all things will be added to you. Fear not, little flock! for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your property and give alms. Create for yourself vaginas that do not decay, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where the thief does not approach and where the moth does not corrupt. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning; and you are like people waiting for their master when he returns from marriage, when he comes and knocks, so that the door can be opened to him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, finds watching; Truly I say to you, he will gird himself, and make them sit down, and begin to serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and in the third watch he comes, and finds them like this; then blessed are those servants. And know that if the master of the house knew what hour the thief would come, he would have been vigilant and would not have allowed his house to be undermined; so be ready; for, at what hour you do not remember, the Son of Man will come. Peter said to Him: Lord! Are you speaking this parable to us, or to everyone? The Lord said: Who is a faithful steward and a wise man, whom the master has appointed over his servants. give them a grain dacha in due course? Blessed is the servant whom, when he comes, his master finds faithful in that deed; Truly I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. If that servant says in his heart: My master will not come soon and begin to beat slaves and slaves, eat and drink and get drunk: The master of that servant will come on a day he does not care, and at an hour he does not think about, and will cut him in pieces, and will make him share with the infidels. The servant who knew the will of his master, and did not prepare, and did not do according to his will, will receive many beatings; and whoever did not know and did something worthy of execution will receive few punishments. But to everyone to whom much is given, much will be required; and to whom much is entrusted, more will be required of him. I have come to bring fire to the earth; and how I wish it would already ignite! I must be baptized with baptism; and how I yearn until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to earth? No, I tell you, but separation. For henceforth the five in one house will be divided; three on two, and two on three; father will be divided into son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. He also said to the people: when you see a cloud rising from the west, immediately say: it will rain; and it happens like this. And when the south wind blows, say: there will be heat; and it happens. Hypocrites! You know how to distinguish the face of heaven and earth, how come you do not recognize this time? Why don’t you judge yourself truthfully? When you go with your rival to the prince, try to deal with him on the way, so that he does not drag you before the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the minister, and the minister will throw you into prison. I tell you: you won’t leave there until you give away your last penny. At that time they came and told Him about the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. And to this Jesus said to them: Do you think that these Galileans were more sinners than all the Galileans, that they suffered so much? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as well. Or do you think that those eighteen on whom the pillar fell in Siloam and killed them were more guilty than all those living in Jerusalem? He also told this parable: a man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came to look for fruit on it, and did not find it; and he said to the vinedresser, Behold, for the third year I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and have found none; cut it down; Why does she exercise the earth? But he answered him: Master! leave it for this year as well, while I dig it up and cover it with pus; will it bear fruit? if not, then finally cut it down. He taught in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath; and there was a woman there who had been sick in spirit for eighteen years, and was bent over, and could not straighten up in any way. When Jesus saw her, he called her and said to her, “Woman, you have been released from your illness.” And he laid his hands on her; and immediately straightened up and praised God. But the elder of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus healed her on the Sabbath, said to the people: there are six days when it is worthy to do; come on those days to be healed, and not on the Sabbath day. The Lord answered him: hypocrite! Doesn't each of you untie his ox or donkey from the manger on the Sabbath and lead it to water? Satan has bound this true daughter of Abraham for eighteen years now, and was it not worthy to loose her from these bonds on the Sabbath day? And when He spoke thus, all those who opposed Him were ashamed; and all the people rejoiced over all His glorious deeds. He said: What is the Kingdom of God like? and to what shall I compare it? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden; and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of the air took refuge in its branches. He also said: What will I liken the Kingdom of God to? It is like leaven, which a woman took and put in three measures of flour until it was all leavened. And he passed through cities and villages, teaching and directing the way to Jerusalem. Someone said to Him: Lord! Are there really few people being saved? He told them: strive to enter through the strait gate; many, I tell you, will try to pass and will not be able to, when the ruler of the house gets up and closes the doors; and you will begin to stand outside and knock on doors and say: Lord! God! open to us. And He will answer you: I don’t know you, where you come from. Then you will begin to say: we ate and drank before You, and You taught at our crossroads. And he will say: I tell you, I don’t know you, where you come from; Depart from Me, all workers of iniquity. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the Kingdom of God, but you are being driven out. And they will come from the east and the west, and the north and the south, and will lie down in the kingdom of God. And behold, some last will be first, and some first will be last. That day some of the Pharisees came and said to Him: get away and get away from here, for Herod wants to kill You. And he said to them: Go, tell that fox: Behold, I cast out demons, and I perform healings this day and morning, and on the third day I will die. However, it is fitting for Me to walk this day and morning and on the next day, for it is impossible for a prophet to perish except in Jerusalem. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you beat up the prophets and stoned those sent to you! how many times have I wanted to gather your children like a bird’s chicks under its wings, but they did not want to! Behold, your house is left to you empty. I tell you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! It happened when He entered on Saturday into the house of a certain prince of the Pharisees to eat bread; and they watched Him, So a certain man came to Him, possessed by a watery illness. Answering them, Jesus said to the lawyers and Pharisees: Is it worthy to heal on the Sabbath? They were silent. And touching him, he healed him and released him. And in response he said to them: Which of you will have a donkey or an ox fall into a well? will he not immediately tear it out on the Sabbath day? And they could not answer Him to those words. He also spoke a parable to those invited, noting how the first places were chosen, and said this: when you are invited to marriage by someone; do not sit in the first place, so that someone more honest than you from those invited does not appear, and the one who called you and him would not have said to you, “Make room for him.” and then you will begin to hold on to the last place with shame. But when you are called; When you arrive, sit down in the last place, so that when you call, when you come, he will say to you: friend! sit higher; then you will have honor before those who are called with you, For everyone who exalts himself will humble himself, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. He also said to the one who called Him: when you make lunch or supper; Do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors, so that when they call you, you will be rewarded. But when you create a feast; call the poor, the weak, the lame, the blind; and you will be blessed that they have nothing to repay you with; You will be rewarded for the resurrection of the righteous. Hearing this, one of those reclining with Him said to Him: Blessed is he who eats bread in the Kingdom of God! He said to him: a certain man made a great supper and called many; And he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited: Go, for everything is ready. And they began to deny everything together. The first one told him: I bought the village, and I need to go and see it; I beg you, forgive me. And the other said: I bought five pairs of oxen and am going to test them; I beg you, forgive me. And another one said: I took a wife for myself, and therefore I cannot come. And when he came, that servant told his master about this. Then, angry, the ruler of the house said to his servant: go quickly to the crossroads and streets of the city, and bring the poor, and the crippled, and the lame, and the blind here. And the servant said: Master! it has been done as you commanded, and there is still room. And the master said to the servant: Go along the roads and along the fences, and force him to come, so that my house may be filled; and I tell you that not one of those men who were called will taste my supper. (For many are called, but few are chosen.) And a multitude went with Him; and turning, he said to them: If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and also his own life, he cannot be My disciple; and whoever does not carry his cross, but follows after Me; cannot be My disciple. For which of you, even though he is building a pillar, does not sit down first and consider the price, whether he has what it takes to complete it? so that when he lays the foundation and is not able to complete it, all who see it will not mock him, saying, “This man began to build and was not able to finish it?” Or what king, going to battle against another king, does not sit down and consult first whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand? otherwise, while he is still far away, he will send an embassy to him to plead for peace. Likewise, anyone of you who does not renounce all his property cannot be My disciple. Good is salt; but if the salt loses its strength, how will it be salted? there will be no need for either soil or pus; they throw it away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear! All the publicans and sinners approached Him to hear Him. The Pharisees and scribes grumbled, saying: He accepts sinners and eats with them. And He told them this parable: What man among you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until he finds it? and having found it, he places it on his shoulders, rejoicing; and, having come home, calls together friends and neighbors, saying to them: Rejoice with me; I found my sheep dead. I tell you that there will be such joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, more than over ninety-nine righteous people who do not require repentance. Or what wife, having ten drachmas, when she loses one drachma, does not light a candle and begin to sweep the room and search diligently until she finds it? and having found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying: Rejoice with me; I found a lost drachma. This, I tell you, is the joy of the Angels of God over one sinner who repents. He also said: a certain man had two sons; and the youngest of them said to his father: Father! give me a worthy part of the estate. And he divided the estate for them. And not many days later, having collected everything, the youngest son went to a distant country and there squandered his property, living dissolutely. When he had lived through everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need; and he went and accosted one of the inhabitants of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs; and he was glad to fill his belly with the faces that the pigs ate; but no one gave it to him. Having come to his senses, he said: How many hired servants does my father have in surplus grain, and I am perishing from hunger! I will get up and go to my father and say to him: Father! I have sinned against heaven and before you, and is no longer worthy to be called your son; take me as your hired servant. And he got up and went to his father. And even farther away, his father saw him, and he felt sorry for him, and he ran, fell on his neck and kissed him. The son said to him: Father! I have sinned in heaven and before you, and am no longer worthy to be called your son. And the father said to his servants: Bring the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and boots on his feet; and bring the fat calf and kill it; Let's eat and have fun! For this son of mine was dead, and is alive again; perished and was found. And they started having fun. His eldest son was in the field; and, returning, when he approached the house, he heard singing and rejoicing; and, calling one of the servants, asked: what happened? He said to him: Your brother has come; and your father killed the fat calf, because he saw it healthy. He became angry and did not want to enter. His father came out and began calling him. But he answered his father: Behold, I have worked for you for so many years and have never transgressed your commandment; and you never gave me even a kid to have fun with my friends; and when this son of yours, having squandered your substance with harlots, came; You slaughtered a fat calf for him. He said to him: My son! you are always with me, and everything I have is yours; it was necessary to rejoice and rejoice. because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; perished and was found. He said to his disciples: a certain man was rich and had a steward, and it was reported to him that he was wasting his property; and calling him, he said to him: What do I hear about you? give an account of the house management; for you can no longer rule the house. And the ruler of the house said to himself: What should I do? my lord will take away the stewardship from me; I can’t dig, I’m ashamed to ask; I know what to do; when I am removed from the management of the house, so that they will receive me into their homes. And calling his master’s debtors, each one separately, he said to the first: How much do you owe my master? He said: one hundred measures of oil. And he said to him: take your letter and sit down quickly, write: fifty. Then he said to another: how much do you owe? He answered: one hundred measures of wheat. And he said to him: Take your letter and write eighty. And the lord praised the unrighteous steward for acting wisely; for the sons of this age are more prudent in their generation than the sons of light. And I say to you: make for yourselves friends from the mammon of unrighteousness, so that when you become poor. accepted you into eternal shelters. Faithful in little, and faithful in much; and unrighteous in a little, and unrighteous in much. And if you were not faithful in the unrighteous, who will believe you in the true? And if you were not faithful in someone else’s, who will give you yours? No slave can work for two masters; or he will hate one and love the other; or he will hold on to one, but will not care about the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. The Pharisees, being lovers of money, heard all this and mocked Him. And he said to them, “You present yourselves as righteous before men; God knows your hearts; What is high among men is an abomination to God. Law and Prophets before John; from then on the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone enters into it with power. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one trait to perish from the law. Anyone who lets his wife go and brings another commits adultery; and whoever marries one who has been released from her husband commits adultery. A certain man was rich; and he clothed himself in purple and fine linen, rejoicing brightly every day. There was a certain beggar named Lazarus, and he lay rotting at his gate, and wanted to be satisfied with the grains falling from the rich man’s meal; but the dogs also came and licked his pus. And the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in hell, who was in torment, lifting up his eyes, he saw Abraham from afar, and Lazarus in his bosom, and crying out, he said: Father Abraham! have mercy on me and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I suffer in this flame. And Abraham said: child, remember that you received good in your life, but Lazarus received evil; now he is comforted here, and you suffer; and more than all this, a great abyss has been established between us and you, so that those who want to pass from here to you will not be able to pass, nor will they pass from there to us. He also said: I pray you, father, send him to my father’s house; for I have five brothers; let him bear witness to them, that they too may not come to this place of torment. Abraham said to him: They have Moses and the prophets, and let them listen to them. He said: no, Father Abraham; but if one comes to them from the dead, they will repent. Then Abraham said to him: If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets; and even if someone rises from the dead, they do not have faith. He also said to His disciples: it is impossible for temptations not to come; but woe to those for whose sake they come; It would have been better for him if a millstone had been hung around his neck and thrown into the sea, than for him to offend one of these little ones. Listen to yourself. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, let him go; and if he sins against you seven times a day, and seven times a day he turns back, saying: I repent; let him go. And the Apostles said to the Lord: Add faith to us. The Lord said: If only you had faith the size of a mustard seed, and said to this fig tree, “Be plucked up and planted in the sea.” I would listen to you. Which of you, having a slave yelling or shepherding, when he returns from the field, will say to him: lie down quickly? Will he not say to him, on the contrary: prepare supper for me, and, having girded, serve me while I eat and drink? and then will you eat and drink yourself? Will he thank this servant for doing what he was commanded? I don't think. So you too, when you have done everything commanded to you, say that we are unbreakable slaves, we only did what we had to do. It happened that, going to Jerusalem, He passed between Samaria and Galilee. And when He entered a certain village, ten lepers met Him and stood from afar, and they said loudly: Jesus Mentor! have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said to them: Go, show yourself to the priests. And while they were walking, they were cleansed. One of them, seeing that he was healed, returned with a great voice, praising God, and fell prostrate at His feet, giving Him praise; and he was a Samaritan. Jesus answered and said, “Were not ten cleansed?” where is nine? How come they are not there, and they have not returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner? And he said to him: Arise, go; your faith has saved you. Having been asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, he answered them and said: The Kingdom of God will not come without notice, and they will not say: here it is, or there. For behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. He said to His disciples: The days will come when you will desire to see the Son of man for one day, and you will not see. And they will tell you: here, or there; don't go and don't look. For like lightning shining from one end of heaven to the other, so will the Son of Man be on His day. But first it is fitting for Him to suffer much and to be rejected by this generation. And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of man: They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Just as it was in the days of Lot; ate, drank, bought, sold, planted, built; and on that day, when Lot left the Sodomites, it rained fire and brimstone from the sky and destroyed everyone. So it will be on the day when the Son of Man appears. On that day, whoever is on the housetop and his vessels in the house, let him not go down to take them; and whoever is in the field, let him not return back either; Whoever seeks to save his soul will destroy it; and whoever destroys her will live her. I tell you: on that night there will be two on one bed: one will be eaten, and the other will be left; two will be grinding together; one is eaten, and the other is left; two will be on the field; one is eaten, and the other is left. And in response they say to Him: where, Lord? He said to them, “Where the body is, there the eagles will also gather.” He also told them a parable about how they should always pray and not lose heart. saying: there was a judge in a certain city, such that he was not afraid of God and was not ashamed of people. A certain widow was in the same city and, coming to him, said: protect me from my rival. And I didn’t want to for a long time. And finally he said to himself: although I do not fear God and I am not ashamed of men; but as this widow continues to bother me, I will protect her so that she does not come to bother me any longer. And the Lord said: Do you hear what the unjust judge says? Will God not create protection for His chosen ones who cry out to Him day and night, although He suffers for a long time about them? I tell you that he will take vengeance on them quickly. Only the Son of Man, having come, will bring faith to earth? He also spoke to others who trust in themselves that they are righteous, and to those who humiliate others, this parable: Two people entered the church to pray: one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed to himself: God! I give You praise, that I am not like other people, predators, unrighteous, adulterers, or like this publican; I fast twice a week; I give tithes on everything I buy. The publican, standing from afar, did not dare to raise his eyes to heaven; but, beating himself on the chest, he said: God! be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you, this man went to his house justified more than this; for everyone who exalts himself will humble himself, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. They brought infants to Him, that He might touch them; The disciples, seeing this, forbade them. But Jesus, calling them, said: Leave the children to come to Me and do not forbid them: of such is the Kingdom of God; Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. And a certain prince asked Him: Good Teacher! What must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to him: Why do you call me good? no one is good except God. You know the commandments: do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother. He said: I have kept all this from my youth. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing; Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and follow Me. He, hearing this, became sad; because he was very rich. And Jesus seeing that he became sorrowful, said: How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the Kingdom of God! and it is easier for a camel to go through the ears of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, “Who can be saved?” But He said: what is impossible with men is possible with God. Peter said: Behold, we have left everything and followed You. And He said to them: Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house, or parents, or brothers, or sisters, or wife, or children for the sake of the Kingdom of God. and would not have received much more in this time and in the age to come, eternal life. Calling back His twelve disciples, He said to them: Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything written through the prophets about the Son of Man will come to an end; For they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, and they will mock Him, and they will wound Him, and they will spit on Him, and those who beat him will kill him; and on the third day he will rise again. But they did not understand any of this, and this verb was hidden from them, and they did not understand what was said. When they approached Jericho, a certain blind man was sitting by the road, asking for alms; and hearing that people were walking by, he asked: what is it? They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. And he cried: Jesus, son of David! have mercy on me. Those walking ahead forbade him to remain silent; but he cried even louder: Son of David! have mercy on me. Jesus stopped and ordered him to be brought to Himself; and when he approached Him, he asked him: what do you want from Me? He said: Lord! so that I can see the light. Jesus said to him: see; your faith has saved you. And he immediately received his sight and followed Him, glorifying God. And all the people, seeing this, gave praise to God. And Jesus entered Jericho and passed through the city. And behold, a man named Zacchaeus, an elder of the tax collectors and a rich man, sought to see Jesus who He is; but he could not follow the people, because he was small in stature; and, running ahead, climbed a fig tree to see Him; for He had to pass by her. And when Jesus came to that place, he saw him and said to him: Zacchaeus! come down soon; for today it is fitting for Me to be in your house. And he hastened down and received Him with joy. And everyone, seeing this, began to murmur and said that He had entered the house of a sinful man. Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord: Lord! I will give this gift of mine to the poor, and if I have offended anyone with anything, I will repay him fourfold. And Jesus said to him, “Now salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost. To those who heard this he added a parable: since He was near Jerusalem, and they thought that the Kingdom of God should appear a hundred soon. He said this: a certain man of good family went to a distant country, took over a kingdom and returned; Having called ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas 15 and said to them: trade until I return. But his citizens hated him and sent ambassadors after him to say: we do not want him to reign over us. And when he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered to call the slaves of those to whom he gave the silver, in order to find out what they had traded. The first one came and said: Master! your mine brought ten mines. And he said to him: good deed, good servant; Because you have been faithful in little things, you shall possess ten cities. And the second one came and said: Master! your mine brought five mines. He also said to him: “You too shall rule over the five cities.” And another one came and said: Master! here is your mine: I kept it, put it in the curb; I was afraid of you, that you are a stern man, you take away what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow. And he said to him: I will judge you out of your mouth, you wicked servant; You knew that I am a stern man, I take away what I did not put in, and I reap what I did not sow; Why didn’t you give my silver as a purchase, and then, when I came, I would have received it with a profit? And he said to those present: take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas. And they said to him: Master! he has ten minutes. I tell you that to everyone who has it will be given; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away; Bring my enemies, those who did not want me to be king over them, here and flog them before me. Having said this, He went further, ascending to Jerusalem. And when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, to the mount called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples, saying: Go to the village that is right in front of you, and when you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied on a leash, which no one has ever sat on; having untied him, bring him; and if anyone asks you: why do you untie? tell him this: that the Lord requires him. And the messengers went and found as He had told them. When they untied the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” They answered that the Lord required him. And they brought him to Jesus, and putting their clothes on the colt, they set Jesus on it. And as He walked, they spread their clothes along the way. And when he was already approaching the descent from the Mount of Olives, all the multitude of disciples began to loudly praise God with joy for all the powers that they had seen, saying: Blessed is the King who comes, in the name of the Lord! peace in heaven and glory in the highest! And certain Pharisees from among the people said to Him: Teacher! rebuke your disciples. But He answered and said to them: I tell you, if they remain silent, the stone will cry out. And when he approached, seeing the city, he cried for it and said: Oh, that you too would understand in this day what your peace is! now these things are hidden from your eyes; for the days will come against you, and your enemies will surround you with trenches, and surround you, and drive you out from everywhere, and they will ruin you, and they will slay your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation. And he entered the church and began to drive out those who were buying and selling in it, saying to them, It is written: My house is a house of prayer; and you made it a den of thieves (Isa.56:7; Jer.7:11). And he taught every day in the church. The chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people sought to destroy Him, and they did not find anything to do with Him; for all the people kept near Him, listening to Him. On one of those days, while He was teaching the people in the church and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and scribes came with the elders, and they said to Him: Tell us, by what authority are You doing this, or who gave You this authority? He answered them: I ask you and I about one thing, and tell Me: Was John's baptism from heaven or from men? They reasoned among themselves, saying: if we say: from heaven; - He will say: why didn’t you believe him? and if we say: from people; - all the people will stone us, for it was known about John that he was a prophet. And they answered: we don’t know where. Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” And He began to speak to the people this parable: a certain man planted a vineyard and, having given it over to vinedressers, went away for a long time; and in due time he sent a servant to the laborers, so that they would give him fruit from the vineyard; the workers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. And he sent another slave; They beat and dishonored him and sent him away empty-handed. And he sent a third one; They also wounded him and kicked him out. Then the lord of the vineyard said, “What will I do?” I will send my beloved son; Perhaps, when they see him, they will be ashamed. But when the workers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, “This is the heir; Let's go, kill him, and it will be ours. And they took him out of the vineyard and killed him. What will the lord of the vineyard do for them? He will come and destroy those workers and give the vineyard to others. Those who heard said: Let it not happen! But He, looking at them, said: what does this written mean: the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone (Ps. 117:22)? everyone who falls on that stone will be crushed; and on whomever it falls, it will crush him. And at that hour the chief priests and scribes sought to lay hands on Him; and they were afraid of the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable to them. And, watching Him, they sent crafty people, pretending to be righteous, to catch Him in the word in order to betray Him to the authorities and hegemonic power. And they asked Him: Teacher! We know that You speak and teach rightly, You don’t look at faces, but you truly teach the way of God; Is it worthy for us to give taxes to Caesar or not? Having understood their wickedness, He said to them: Why are you tempting Me? show Me the denarius: whose image and inscription is on it? They answered: Caesarian. He said to them, “Render therefore the things that are Caesar’s to Caesar, and the things that are God’s to God.” And they could not catch Him in His word before the people, and, marveling at His answer, they remained silent. Some of the Sadducees also came - they say there is no resurrection - and asked Him: Teacher! Moses wrote to us: if anyone's brother dies and leaves his wife, and dies childless, then let his brother take his wife and raise up seed for his brother (Deut. 25:5). There were seven brothers. The first, having taken his wife, died childless; and the second took a wife, and he died childless; and the third took it, and so did all seven; and they left no children, and died. After all, the wife died. So, on the resurrection, which of them will she be the wife of? for seven had her as a wife. And Jesus answered and said to them, “The children of this age marry and commit violence; and those who are worthy to reach that age and the resurrection from the dead do not marry or encroach; and they can no longer die; for they are equal to the angels and are the sons of God, being the sons of the resurrection. And that the dead rise, and Moses said at the bush, when he called the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob; God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for with Him all are alive. To this, some of the scribes said: Teacher, you have spoken rightly! And they no longer dared to ask Him about anything. He told them: How do they say that Christ is the son of David? For David himself says in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool (Ps. 109:1). So David calls Him Lord; How can He be his son? And in the presence of all the people who heard, he said to his disciples: Beware of the scribes, who love to walk around in long robes, and to be bowed down to them in the marketplace, who love to preside in the synagogues and have the first place at suppers, they devour the houses of widows and perform long prayers for show; these will receive greater condemnation. Jesus looked up and saw the rich, sweeping their gifts into the treasury; I also saw a certain poor widow who put two mites there; and said: Truly I say to you, this wretched widow has laid down more than all others; for all of them, out of their abundance, put in as a gift to God, but this one, out of her poverty, put in all the food she had. And when others began to talk about the church, which was decorated with expensive stones and deposits; He said: the days will come when all that you see here will not be left one stone upon another; everything will be destroyed. And they asked Him: Teacher! when will this happen? and what sign will there be when this is to happen? He said: Take heed, lest you be deceived; for many will come in my name, saying that I am he; and the time is near. Don't follow them. When will you hear about wars and troubles; don't be horrified. It behooves this to happen first; but this is not the end yet. Then he said to them: nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; There will be great earthquakes in places, and famines, and pestilences, and there will be fears and great signs from heaven. First of all, they will lay their hands on you, and will persecute you, delivering you up to hosts and prisons, and will lead you before kings and rulers, for My name’s sake; and this will be your testimony. So, put it on your heart not to think in advance what to answer, For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries will not be able to resist, nor give an answer. You will be betrayed by your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends; and they will kill some of you, and you will be hated by everyone for My name's sake. But not even a hair of your head will perish. Support your souls with your patience. When you see Jerusalem surrounded by troops, then understand that its desolation is approaching: Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; and whoever is in the midst of the city, come out; and if anyone is in the surrounding country, do not enter into it; then these are the days of vengeance, that all that is written may be fulfilled. Woe to them that are pregnant and to those who nurse at the breast in those days; for there will be great disaster on the earth and wrath on this people, and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be carried away into captivity among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. And there will be signs in the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and on earth the despondency of the peoples from an unexpected misfortune, when the sea will roar and be indignant; people will die from fear and anticipation of everything that is coming to the universe; for the powers of heaven will move, and then they will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and much glory. When will this begin to come true; Arise and lift up your head, as your redemption draws near. And he told them a parable: You see the fig tree, and what kind of trees they are all: when they are already blooming, seeing this. You know yourself that summer is coming. So you too, when you see what is coming true, know that the Kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away, when all these things are done. Heaven and earth will pass away; but My words will not pass away. Take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be burdened with gluttony and drunkenness and the cares of this life, and that day suddenly come upon you: for, like a network. He will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth; Be vigilant at all times, praying, that you may be worthy to avoid all these future troubles and to appear before the Son of Man. And He was in the church during the day and taught, and at night He went out and settled on the mount called Olivet. And all the people came to Him in the church in the morning to listen to Him. The Feast of Unleavened Bread, called Passover, was approaching; and the chief priests and scribes sought how to destroy Him; They were still afraid of the people. Satan entered into Judas, who was called Iscariot, one of the twelve; and he went to talk with the chief priests and the leading people about how to betray Him to them. And they rejoiced and agreed to give him the pieces of silver; He promised, and looked for a convenient time to betray Him to them, not in front of the people. The day of unleavened bread came, when the Passover lamb was to be slain. And he sent Peter and John, saying: Go, prepare for us to eat the Passover. They said to Him: Where do you want to prepare? He said to them: behold, when you enter the city, you will meet a man carrying water in a jug; follow him into the house where he enters, and say to the ruler of the house: the Teacher says to you: where is the monastery where I can eat the Passover with My disciples? and he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare there. And they went and found as he had told them, and prepared the Passover. And when the hour had come, He lay down, and the twelve Apostles with Him. And he said to them: I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I accept suffering; for I tell you that from now on I will not eat it until it is completed in the Kingdom of God. And having accepted the cup, and having given praise, he said: Take it and divide it among yourselves; For I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. And having received the bread, and having given praise, he broke it and gave it to them, saying: This is My Body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me. Likewise the cup after supper, saying: This cup is the new testament through my blood, which is shed for you. But behold, the hand of him who betrays Me is with Me at the table. For the Son of man comes as it was ordained; but woe to man by whom He is betrayed. And they began to reason among themselves which of them would want to do such a thing. There was also a dispute between them as to which of them was considered the greatest. He said to them: the kings of the nations rule over them, and their rulers are called benefactors; But you are not like that: but whoever is the greatest among you must be like the younger, and the oldest must be like one serving. For who is greater: the one who reclines or the one who serves? isn't he reclining? And I am in your midst as one who serves. But you remained with Me in My troubles; and I will bequeath to you, as My Father has bequeathed to Me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And the Lord said: Simon! Simon! Behold, Satan asks that he may sow you like wheat; but I prayed for you, so that your faith may not fail; and once you have turned, strengthen your brethren. He answered Him: Lord! I am ready to go with You to prison and to death. But He said: I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you do not know Me. And he said to them: When I sent you without a vagina and without a bag and without boots, did you need anything? They answered: nothing. Then He said to them: But now, whoever has a vagina, take it, and also the bag; and whoever does not have it, sell his clothes and buy a sword; For I tell you that it is fitting that this which is written should also be fulfilled in Me: “I was imputed with the transgressors.” For what is written about Me comes to an end (Is. 53:12). They said: Lord! here are two swords here. And He said to them: Enough. And he went out and went according to custom to the Mount of Olives; and His disciples followed Him. Having arrived at the place, he said to them: Pray so that you do not fall into temptation. And He Himself retreated from them a stone's throw and, kneeling, prayed, saying: Father! If only it were Your will to take this cup past Me! But not My will, but Yours be done. An angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. And being in trouble, he prayed more diligently; and His sweat was like drops of blood falling on the ground. And he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, and found them sleeping with sorrow. and said to them: Why are you sleeping? Arise and pray, so that you will not fall into temptation. And while He was still speaking, behold, a crowd appeared, and one of the twelve, called Judas, walked ahead of them, and came to Jesus to kiss Him. For he gave them this sign: whomever I kiss, he is the one. Jesus said to him: Judas! Do you betray the Son of man with a kiss? Seeing this, those who were with Him said to Him: Lord! Should I strike with a sword? And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Then Jesus said: Leave it, enough. And touching his ear, he healed him. And Jesus said to the high priests and elders of the church and the elders who came against Him, “You came out as if against a thief with weapons and a dagger to take Me!” Every day I was with you in the church, and you did not raise your hands against Me; but behold, your hour and the power of darkness have come. And they took Him and led Him away and brought Him into the courtyard of the high priest. Peter followed from afar. They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together; Then Peter sat down in the midst of them. Seeing him, a certain slave girl sitting in the light, and looking at him, said: “This one too was with Him.” but he denied Him, saying to the woman, “I do not know Him.” And a little later, another, seeing him, said: “You too are one of them.” And Peter said to the man, No. About an hour passed, and someone else spoke urgently: truly, this one was with Him; for he is a Galilean. Peter also said to the man, “I don’t know what you are saying.” And immediately, as he said again, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter; And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as He said to him: Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly. And the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him; and, covering Him, they struck Him in the face, asking Him: Prophesy, who hit You? And many other blasphemous words were spoken against Him. And when the day came, the elders of the people and the high priests and the scribes gathered together and led Him into their congregation, and they said: Are you the Christ? tell us. And He said to them: If I tell you, you will not believe; If I ask you, you will not answer Me and will not let me go; from now on the Son of man will sit at the right hand of the power of God. And they all said: So are you the Son of God? He answered them: You say that I am. They said: What more evidence do we need? you yourself heard from His mouth. And the whole multitude stood up and led Him to Pilate, and they began to lay blame on Him, saying: We have seen that He seduces our people and forbids giving tribute to Caesar, calling Himself Christ the King. Pilate asked Him: Are you the King of the Jews? He answered and said to him, “You speak.” Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the people: I find no guilt in this man. But they stubbornly began to say that He corrupts people, teaching throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee to this place. Hearing about Galilee, Pilate asked: Is He a Galilean? And having learned that He was from Herod's region, He sent Him to Herod; Herod was also in Jerusalem these days. Herod, seeing Jesus, was very happy; for he had long wanted to see Him, having heard a lot about Him, and hoped to see some sign from Him. And he questioned Him a lot; but He did not answer him. The chief priests and scribes stood there and diligently slandered Him. But Herod, with his soldiers, reproaching Him and mocking Him, clothed Him in light clothes and returned Him to Pilate. That day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; before they were at enmity with each other. Pilate, having called together the high priests and elders and the people, He said to them: You brought this man to me as one who corrupts the people; and so, having examined it in front of you, I do not find in this man a single guilt that you place on Him; also Herod: I sent Him to him, and nothing was found in Him worthy of death; So, having punished Him, I will release Him. He had to let them have one for all the holidays. But all the people cried out: execute Him! release Barabbas to us. That Barabbas was thrown into prison for some rebellion in the city and for murder. Pilate again raised his voice, wanting to release Jesus. But they cried out: crucify him, crucify him! And he said to them a third time, “What evil has He done?” I found nothing worthy of death in Him; So, having punished Him, I will release Him. But they continued with a great cry to demand Him to be crucified; and their cries and those of the bishops prevailed. And Pilate decided to be at their request, and he released to them the one who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, whom they asked; and he gave Jesus over to their will. And when they led Him away, they captured Simon, a certain Cyreneite, who was coming from the field, and laid the cross on him to carry the cross after Jesus. And a great multitude of people and women followed Him, weeping and lamenting for Him. Jesus turned to them and said: Daughters of Jerusalem! do not weep for Me, but weep for yourself and for your children; For the days are coming when they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not nursed! Then they will begin to say to the mountains: fall on us, and to the hills: cover us. If they do this to a green tree, what will happen to a dry tree? They led the other two villains with Him to death. And when they came to the place called Execution; There they crucified Him and the villains, one on the right and the other on the left. Jesus said: Father! let them go; they don’t know what they are doing. And they divided His garments by casting lots. And people stood and watched. The leading people also quarreled with them, saying: He saved others, let him save himself, if he is the Christ, God’s chosen one. The soldiers also mocked Him, approaching and offering Him vinegar, and they said: if You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself. There was also an inscription over Him written in Hellenic, Roman and Hebrew characters: This is the King of the Jews. And one of the hanged villains blasphemed Him and said: If You are Christ’s, save Yourself and us. The other, answering, reproached him and said: Or are you not afraid of God, when you yourself are condemned to the same thing? and we accepted in truth what is worthy of our deeds; This one did not do a single evil. And he said to Jesus: remember me, Lord, when you come in your kingdom! And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Now it was the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour; and the sun darkened, and the veil of the church was rent in Wednesday. And, shouting with a great voice, Jesus said: Father! I commit My spirit into Your hands. And having said this, he betrayed his spirit. The centurion, seeing what had happened, glorified God and said: Truly this man was righteous. And all the people who came to this shame, seeing what was happening, returned, beating their chests. And all who knew Him and the women who followed Him from Galilee stood afar off and looked at all this. And behold a man named Joseph, a member of the council, a good and righteous man, not involved in their advice and work, - from Arimathea, the city of Judea, and himself looking forward to the Kingdom of God, went to Pilate and asked for the Body of Jesus; and, taking it off, he wrapped it in a shroud and laid it in a tomb hewn out of stone, where no one had ever been laid before. That day was Friday, and Saturday dawned. Then came those wives who had come with Jesus from Galilee, and saw the tomb, and how His body was laid out. Having returned, they prepared spices and ointment; and on the Sabbath they kept silent according to the commandment. On the very first day of the week, very early, they came to the tomb, wearing the prepared aromas, and others with them; but they found a stone rolled away from the tomb, and when they entered they did not find the Body of the Lord Jesus. And so, when they were perplexed about this, two men stood before them in shining robes. They said to those who were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground: Why are you looking for the living with the dead? He is not here - He has arisen, as He told you when He was still in Galilee, saying that it is fitting for the Son of Man to be delivered into the hands of sinful people and to be crucified and to rise on the third day. And they remembered His words, and, returning from the tomb, they announced all this to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary of James, and others with them, who told the Apostles this. And their words appeared to them as lies, and they did not believe them. Peter got up and ran to the tomb and, leaning close, saw only the vestments lying and left, marveling at what had happened. And so, on the same day, two of them went to a village sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, whose name was Emmaus, and talked among themselves about everything that had happened. And so, while they were talking, reasoning with each other, Jesus Himself approached and walked with them; but their eyes were stopped so that they would not recognize Him. And He said to them: What are you talking about as you walk among yourself, and why are you sad? And answering, one named Cleopas said to Him: Were you the only stranger who was in Jerusalem and did not see what happened there in these days? And he said to them: what is it? They said to Him: About Jesus of Nazareth, He was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all people, how our bishops and princes handed Him over to be condemned to death and crucified Him; and we hoped that He had come to deliver Israel; but here, and after that. It’s already the third day now since all that happened. But some of our wives also terrified us, who were early at the tomb: They did not find His Body and, when they came, they said that they had seen the appearance of Angels, who said that He was alive. And some of us went to the tomb, and found everything just as the women had said; They didn't see it themselves. And He said to them: O foolish and inert hearts, believe what the prophets have spoken! Isn’t that how it became for Christ to suffer and be brought into His glory? And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, He told them from all the Scriptures, what was written about Him. And they approached the village where they were going, but He definitely wanted to go further. And they restrained Him, saying: stay with us - it was already time for evening, and the day had fallen. And He went in with them and stayed. And so, when he was reclining with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them; and their eyes were opened, and they knew Him; and He became invisible. And they said to each other: Didn’t our heart burn within us when He spoke to us on the way and told us the Scripture? And they arose at that hour and returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, saying that the Lord has truly risen and appeared to Simon. And the two told about what happened to them on the way, and how He became known to them in the breaking of bread. And while they were saying this, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were afraid and fearful, thinking that they saw the spirit. And He said to them: Why are you troubled, and why are thoughts entering your hearts? You see My hands and My feet, that I myself am. Handle Me and see: a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see with Me. And having said this, he showed them his hands and feet. He also said to those who did not believe them with joy and wonder: Do you have anything to eat here? They gave Him a piece of baked fish and a honeycomb. And he said to them, “These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written in the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms about me must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said: Thus it is written, and thus it became that Christ should suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem; you are witnesses to this; and behold, I will send the promise of My Father upon you: and you sit in the city of Jerusalem until you are endowed with power from on high. Having brought them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them. And behold, when he blessed them, he departed from them and ascended into heaven. And they worshiped Him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and always remained in the church, praising and blessing God. Amen. You might be interested in:
