The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
as it is written by the prophets: Behold, I send My angel before You, and he will prepare Your way before You (Mal.3:1);
the voice of one crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths right (Isaiah 40:3).
John appeared, baptizing in the desert and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
And the whole country of Judea and the people of Jerusalem came to him, and were baptized in the Jordan River by him, confessing their sins.
John was clothed with camel's sackcloth, and a leather belt about his loins, and ate locusts and wild honey.
And he preached, saying: He who is stronger than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to bow down to untie the thong of His boots;
and I baptized you with water; and He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
And he, coming out of the water, sees the heavens opening and the Spirit like a dove descending on Him.
And a voice came from heaven: You are My Beloved Son, in Him I am well pleased.
And after this the Spirit leads Him out into the desert.
And he was there in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the beasts; and Angels served Him.
According to the tradition of John, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God,
and thus saying that the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the Gospel.
Walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother sweeping nets into the sea; for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
And immediately, leaving their nets, they followed Him.
And having gone a little way from there, he saw James Zebedee and John his brother also in the ship mending nets;
and immediately called them. And leaving their father Zebedee in the ship with the mercenaries, they followed Him.
They come to Capernaum; and soon afterwards on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.
And they marveled at His teaching; for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
There was a man in their synagogue, possessed by an unclean spirit, and he cried out:
leave; What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? You have come to destroy us! I know You, who You are, the Holy One of God.
But Jesus rebuked him, saying: Be silent and come out of him.
And the unclean spirit shook him, and cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him.
And everyone was horrified, so that they asked each other: what is this? and what new teaching is this, that He commands even the unclean spirits with authority, and they obey Him?
And soon the rumor about Him spread throughout the whole country of Galilee.
Soon leaving the synagogue, they came to the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
Simonov's mother-in-law was lying in a hot fever, and they immediately told him about her.
He approached and lifted her up, taking her hand; and the fever immediately left her and began to serve them.
Late in the evening, when the sun set, they brought to Him all the sick and demon-possessed.
And the whole city gathered at the door.
And He healed many who were seriously suffering from various ailments; and he cast out many demons and did not allow the demons to say that they knew His real Christ.
And in the morning, getting up before dawn, he went out into a deserted place and began to pray there.
and Simon and those who were with him followed him there;
and having found Him, they say to Him: everyone is looking for You.
He says to them: let's go to the nearby churchyards and cities; and there I need to preach; for for this purpose I came.
And he began to preach in their synagogues throughout Galilee and cast out demons.
A leper comes to Him, begging Him, and, falling on his knees before Him, he says to Him: If you want, you can cleanse me.
Jesus, being moved with compassion, stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him: I want you to be clean.
And with this word, the leprosy immediately left him and he became clean.
And, having forbidden him, he immediately sent him away,
and he said to him: see that you don’t say anything to anyone; But go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.
And He, having departed, began to tell and divulge everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but remained outside, in desert places. And they came to Him from everywhere.
And He came again to Capernaum after a few days; and it was heard that He was in the house.
Many immediately gathered, so that there was no longer room at the door, and he began to speak the word to them.
They came to Him carrying a paralytic, and four carried him;
and, since it was impossible to bring the people to Him, they opened the roof of the house where He was, and, having dug through it, they lowered the bed on which the paralytic lay.
Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Some of the scribes sat there and thought in their hearts:
Why does He say such blasphemy? Who can forgive sins? Is there only one God?
And immediately, Jesus realizing in His spirit that they were thinking this way in themselves, He said to them, “Why are you thinking this in your hearts?”
which is more convenient? say to the paralytic: are your sins forgiven? or should I say: get up, take up your bed and walk?
But let you know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins (speaking to the paralytic):
I say to you: Arise, take up your bed and go to your house.
And he stood up immediately, and, taking his bed, went out before everyone, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying that we had never seen anything like this.
And Jesus went out again to the sea; and all the people went to Him and taught them.
And, walking by, He saw Levi Alpheus sitting on the tollhouse 12, and said to him: follow Me. And he got up and followed Him.
And when Jesus reclined in his house, and many publicans and sinners reclined with Jesus and with his disciples; for there were many of them, and they all followed Him.
The scribes and Pharisees, seeing Him eating with publicans and sinners, said to His disciples: How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?
And when Jesus heard this, he said to them: It is not the healthy who require a doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
The disciples of John and the Pharisees fasted. They come to Him and say: Why do the disciples of John and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?
And Jesus said to them: Can wedding guests fast while the groom is with them? As long as the groom is with them, they cannot fast;
but the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; and then they fast on those days.
No one sews patches made of unbleached fabric onto old clothes: otherwise, what is sewn again will be pulled away from the old one, and there will be an even bigger hole.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine will be spilled, and the skins will perish; but they put new wine into new wineskins.
It happened on Saturday that He passed through a sown field; and His disciples began to pluck the ears of corn along the way.
And the Pharisees said to Him: Look, what are they doing on the Sabbath, which should not be done?
And He said to them: Have you never read what David did when he was in need, and he and those who were with him were hungry?
How did he enter the house of God in the presence of Abiathar the bishop, and eat the showbread, which is unworthy for anyone to eat except the priests, and gave it to those who were with him?
And he said to them: The Sabbath was created for man’s sake, and not man’s for the sake of the Sabbath;
so is the Lord the Son of Man on the Sabbath.
And he came again to the synagogue, and there was a man there who had a withered hand.
And they watched Him to see if He would be healed on the Sabbath, so that they could accuse Him.
And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Stand in the middle.
And he says to them: Is it worthy to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath? save your soul or destroy your soul? They were silent.
And looking at them with anger, grieving over the hardening of their hearts, he said to that man: Stretch out your hand. He stretched out; and his hand was established as sound as the other.
And when he left, the Pharisees immediately conspired with the Herodians to attack Him, how to destroy Him.
But Jesus and His disciples went to the sea; and a great multitude followed him from Galilee and from Judea,
from Jerusalem and Idumea, and beyond the Jordan. And from Tigris and Sidon, having heard many things that He did, they went to Him.
And He told His disciples to prepare a ship for Him for the sake of the many people, so that they would not oppress Him.
For He healed many, so that those who had wounds rushed to Him to touch Him.
And the unclean spirits, when they saw Him, fell before Him and cried out: You are the Son of God.
But He firmly forbade them to declare Him.
And he went up the mountain and called to Him whom He Himself wanted; and came to Him.
And he appointed twelve to be with Him and send them out to preach,
and gave them power to heal diseases and cast out demons;
and James Zebedee, and John, the brother of Jacob, and called their names: Boanerges, that is, the sons of Thunder;
and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James Alphaeus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Canaanite,
and Judas Iscariot - he also betrayed Him.
They came to the house, and the people gathered again, so that it was impossible for them to eat bread.
And when his neighbors heard, they went to take him: they said that he had become furious.
And the scribes who came from Jerusalem said that Beelzebub was in Him, and that by the power of the prince of demons he cast out demons.
And calling them, he spoke to them in parables: How can Satan cast out Satan?
If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand;
and if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand;
and if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come.
No one entering the house of a strong man can plunder his belongings until he first binds the strong man; and then he will plunder his house.
Truly I say to you, that all sins and blasphemies, no matter how they are blasphemed, will be forgiven the sons of men;
but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit; will not be released to him forever, but he is guilty of eternal judgment.
He said, because they said: there is an unclean spirit in Him.
His Mother and brothers came and stood outside. sent to Him to call Him.
The people sat around Him. And they said to Him: Behold, Your Mother and Your brothers and Your sisters are standing outside and looking for You.
And he answered them: Who is My mother or My brothers?
And looking around at those sitting around Him, He said: Here are My mother and My brothers;
For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and My mother.
And again he began to teach by the sea; and a great crowd gathered to Him, so that He Himself entered the ship and sat on the sea; and all the people were by the sea, on the earth.
And he taught them in many parables, and in his teaching he said to them:
hear: behold, a sower went out to sow;
and when he sowed, it happened that something fell along the way, and they flew in and pecked it;
some fell on a rock where there was little earth; and soon it sprang up where there was no depth of earth;
when the sun rose, it faded; and, having no root, it withered;
some fell among thorns; and the thorns came up and choked them, and did not bear fruit;
and some fell on good soil, and gave fruit, and sprang up, and grew; and it brought where thirty, where sixty, and where a hundred.
And he said: He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
When he was left alone, those who were with Him, along with the twelve, asked Him about the parable.
And he said to them: it has been given to you to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God, but to those outside everything happens in parables;
so that seeing they do not see; and when they hear they do not understand, lest they be converted, and their sins be forgiven them.
And he says to them: Do you not understand this parable? How can you understand all the parables?
Those who are on the way where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and carries away the word sown in their hearts.
And those who sow on stone, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy;
but they have no root in themselves and are temporary; and later, when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, they are immediately offended.
But those who sow among the thorns hear the word;
but the sorrows of this age and the flattery of wealth and other incoming lusts choke the word, and there is no fruit.
But these that sow in the good ground hear the word and receive it, and bear fruit thirty, and sixty, and a hundred.
And he said to them: Do they then bring a lamp to put it under a bushel or under a bed? Isn’t it just to put it on the candlestick?
There is nothing hidden that will not appear; and nothing hidden that would not come to light.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
And he said to them: Take heed of what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured back to you and will be added to you who hear.
For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
And he said: The Kingdom of God is like how a man sweeps seed into the ground;
and sleeps and rises night and day; and how the seed vegetates and grows, he does not know;
for the earth from itself first produces grass, then an ear, then a full grain in the ear;
when the fruit is ripe, then he sends in the sickle, for the harvest has come.
And he said: What shall we compare the Kingdom of God to? or to what parable shall we apply it?
Like a mustard seed, when sown into the ground, it is smaller than all the seeds of the earth;
and when it is sown, it grows and grows larger than all the grains, and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can soar under its canopy.
And he preached the word to them in many parables, as many as they could hear.
Without a parable, he did not speak a word to them; and he especially told the disciples everything.
And he said to them in the evening of the same day: Let us go to the other side.
And having sent the people away, they took Him as He was in the ship; and other ships were with Him.
And a great windy storm arose; and the waves poured into the ship, so that it even sank.
And He Himself slept at the stern at the head. And they woke Him up and said to Him: Teacher! or do you not need that you perish?
And he stood up and rebuked the wind and the rivers of the sea: be silent, stop. And the wind died down, and there was great silence.
And he said to them: Why are you so fearful? or do you have no faith?
And they were afraid with great fear, and said among themselves: Who is this, that even the wind and the sea should listen to Him?
And they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.
And when He came out of the ship; A man with an unclean spirit immediately met Him from the graves;
he had a dwelling in tombs; and no one could even bind him with chains;
and many times he was shackled with shackles and iron chains, but he broke the iron chains and broke the shackles; and no one was able to tame him;
and always, night and day, in the graves and in the mountains he screamed and beat against the stones.
Seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him,
and, crying out loudly, he said: What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I conjure You by God, do not torment me.
For Jesus said to him, “Come out, O unclean spirit, from this man.”
And he asked him: what is your name? And he answered, My name is Legion; there are many of us.
And they prayed a lot to Him not to send them out of that country.
There was a large herd of pigs grazing there near the mountain.
And all the demons begged Him, saying: Send us among the swine, to enter into them.
And Jesus commanded them. And the unclean spirits departed and entered the swine; and the herd rushed from the shore into the sea; there were two thousand of them; and drowned in the sea.
Those who were tending the pigs ran and proclaimed it in the city and in the villages. And the people came out to see what had happened.
They came to Jesus and saw, possessed by a demon, that there was a legion, sitting clothed and completely sane; and they were afraid.
They told them who saw what happened to the possessed man, and about the pigs.
And they began to pray to Him to depart from their borders.
And when He entered the ship, the demoniac asked Him to be with Him.
But Jesus did not allow him, but said: Go to your house to your own and tell them what the Lord has done for you and has had mercy on you.
And he went and began to preach in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him; and everyone marveled.
And when Jesus again moved in the ship to the other side, many people gathered to Him. He was by the sea.
And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Him, he fell at His feet,
and he began to pray to Him intensely, saying: My daughter is dying; come and lay your hands on her so that she may be saved and live.
And Jesus went with him, and a great crowd followed him, and pressed him.
And a certain wife, who suffered from bleeding for twelve years,
having suffered a lot from many doctors, exhausted all his wealth, received no benefit and came to even worse things,
Having heard about Jesus, she came up from behind among the people and touched His garment;
for she said: if I touch His vestments, I will be saved.
And immediately her source of blood dried up; and felt in my body that I was healed from the ulcer.
But Jesus immediately, realizing in Himself the power that came from Him, turned to the people and said: Who touched My clothes?
And the disciples said to Him: You see, the people are crowding You, and you ask: Who touched Me?
But He looked around, although he could see who had done this.
The woman, being afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
He said to her: daughter! your faith has saved you; Go in peace and be healthy from your plague.
While He was still speaking, they came from the ruler of the synagogue and said: Your daughter is dead; Why are you still bothering Teachers?
Jesus, having heard those words, immediately said to the leader of the synagogue: Do not be afraid, only believe.
And He left no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.
He comes to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and sees confusion and many people crying and crying out.
And he entered and said to them: Why are you troubled and crying? the young woman is not dead, but is sleeping.
And they laughed at Him. But He, having sent everyone out, takes the father and mother of the girl and those who were with Him, and enters where the girl lay.
And, taking the maiden by the hand, he says to her: talifah kumi, which means: maiden, I tell you, arise.
And immediately the girl got up and went; and she was about twelve years old. And they were horrified with great horror.
But He forbade them strongly, so that no one would know about it, and said: Give her something to eat.
And he left from there and came to his fatherland; and His disciples followed Him.
Saturday came; and He began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard were amazed and said, “Where does He get this from?” What kind of wisdom was given to Him, and such miracles happened through His hands?
Is He not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Josiah, Judas, and Simon? Are not His sisters here among us? And they were offended because of Him.
Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, and in his own kindred, and in his own house.
And he could not create a single force there; He healed only a few sick people by laying on his hands.
And he marveled at their unbelief. And he walked around the surrounding villages and taught.
And having called twelve, he began to send them out two by two and gave them power over unclean spirits.
And he commanded them not to take anything on the journey, only one staff, no scrip, no bread, no copper at their belts,
but to put on sandals and not to wear two layers of clothing.
And he said to them: Where you enter the house, there remain until you leave that place;
and if somewhere they do not receive you and do not listen to you, when you come out from there, shake off the dust from under your feet as a testimony to them. Truly I say to you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city.
And they went and began to preach, so that they would repent.
And they cast out many demons, and they anointed many sick people with oil, and they were healed.
And King Herod heard about Jesus (for His name had become known), and said: John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and for this reason they work in him.
Others said: this is Elijah; and others said that he was a prophet, or that he was one of the prophets.
Herod, having heard, said: John, whom I beheaded, he is he: he rose from the dead.
For this Herod sent, took John, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; because he married her.
And John said to Herod: It is not worthy for you to have your brother's wife.
Herodias was angry with him and wanted to kill him, but she could not.
For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him; I did a lot by obeying him, and listened to him in sweetness.
And the day of need came when Herod, for the sake of his birth, created a feast for his nobles, the commanders of thousands and the elders of Galilee.
The daughter of that Herodias arose and, dancing, pleased Herod and those who were reclining with him. And the king said to the maiden: Ask me what you want, and I will give it to you.
And he swore to her: whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, even until half my kingdom.
She went out and said to her mother, “What do you ask for?” She answered: the head of John the Baptist.
And immediately, hastily entering the king, she began to ask, saying: I want you to give me now on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
And the king was sad; but, for the sake of the oath and because of those reclining with him, he did not want to refuse her.
And immediately, sending a speculator, the king ordered to bring his head.
He went and beheaded him in prison and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the maiden, and the maiden gave it to her mother.
And when his disciples heard this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
And the Apostles gathered to Jesus, and told Him everything, both what they had done and what they had taught.
And he said to them: go alone to a deserted place and rest a little. For there were many coming and going, so that they had no time to eat.
And they went to a deserted place by ship alone.
And the people saw them depart, and many recognized them. And the pedestrians from all the cities began to flock there, and they warned them, and gathered to Him.
And Jesus went out and saw a multitude of people and had mercy on them, that they were like sheep without a shepherd; and began to teach them a lot.
And how there was already a lot of time; His disciples, approaching Him, began to say that the place was deserted, and the hour was already late:
let them go, let them go to the surrounding villages and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.
He answered and said to them, “Give them something to eat.” And they said to Him: Should we go and buy two hundred pennies worth of bread and give it to them to eat?
But He asked them: How many loaves do you have? come and look; and when they recognized it, they said, “Five loaves and two fish.”
Then he ordered them to seat everyone in parts on the green grass.
And they reclined in rows, hundreds and fifty.
And having received the five loaves and two fish, he looked up to heaven. He blessed and broke the bread, and gave it to His disciples to distribute to them; and he divided both fish among everyone.
and they collected twelve koshniks full of pieces of bread and the remains of fish.
There were up to five thousand men who ate the loaves.
And then He forced His disciples to enter the ship and precede Him on the other side in Bethsaida, while He sent the people away.
And, having dismissed them, he went up the mountain to pray.
And when evening came, the ship was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on earth.
And I saw them laboring on the voyage; for the wind was contrary to them. And about the fourth watch of the night he approached them, walking on the sea, and wanted to pass them by.
But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out.
For everyone saw Him and were troubled. And immediately He spoke to them, and said to them: Be of good cheer; It's me, don't be afraid.
And he entered their ship; and the wind died down. And they were greatly horrified and amazed at themselves.
For they did not understand the bread: and their hearts were hardened.
Having crossed, they arrived in the land of Gennesaret and landed.
When they got out of the ship, everyone immediately recognized Him,
and they came running from all over that country, and began to bring the sick on their beds, wherever they heard that He was.
And wherever He came to villages, or to cities and villages, they stood the sick at crossroads and prayed to Him to at least touch the hem of His robe, and those who touched Him were healed.
And the Pharisees and certain of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, gathered to Him;
and when they saw His other disciples eating bread with unclean, that is, unwashed hands, they reproached Him.
For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat before they have washed their hands, holding to the tradition of the elders;
and they do not eat from the market without bathing. And there are many other things that they have decided to hold on to; washing the flasks and bowls and cauldrons and beds.
Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him: Why do not Your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat the loaves with foolish hands?
He answered them: Isaiah rightly prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors Me with their lips; their heart is far from Me;
But they honor Me in vain, teaching doctrines the commandments of men (Is. 29:13);
for you, having abandoned the commandment of God, keep the traditions of men, washing vessels and flasks, and do many other similar things.
And he said to them: Is it good to reject the commandment of God, just to keep your tradition?
Moses said: Honor your father and your mother, and whoever curses your father or mother shall die (Ex. 20:12; 21:16);
But you say: when a person says to his father or mother: Corvan (that is, a gift to God), whatever you would use from me,
then you no longer leave him what to do to his father or his mother,
transgressing the word of God by your tradition which you have established; and likewise you do many such things.
And he called all the people and said to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:
nothing entering a person from outside can defile him; but what comes from it defiles a person;
He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
And when He entered the house. from the people, His disciples asked Him about the parable.
And he said to them: Or are you also foolish? Don’t you understand that everything that enters a person from outside cannot defile him?
for it does not enter into his heart, but into his belly, and out, cleansing all kinds of food.
He also said that what comes from a person defiles a person,
for from within, from the heart of man, come evil thoughts, adultery, fornication, murder,
theft, extortion, insults, deceit, flattery, deeds, the evil eye, blasphemy, pride, madness;
all this evil comes from within and defiles a person.
And he left there and came to the borders of Tire and Sidon; and, having entered the house, he did not want anyone to know about Him, but he could not hide.
A wife, whose daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit, heard about Him, and she entered and fell at His feet.
That wife was a pagan, a Syrophoenician by birth; and begged Him to cast out the demon from her daughter.
But Jesus said to her: Leave it, let the children be satisfied first; It is not good to take away the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.
She answered and said to Him: So, Lord; After all, even dogs at meals eat from the children’s grains.
And he said to her: Go for this word; The demon has come out of your daughter.
And when she came to her house, she found that the demon had left, and her daughter was lying on her bed.
And Jesus left the borders of Tire and Sidon and came again to the Sea of Galilee between the borders of the Decapolis.
And they brought to Him a deaf man, tongue-tied, and begged Him to lay His hand on him.
And taking him away from the people especially. He put His fingers into his ears and, spitting, touched his tongue;
and, looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him: Ephphatha, that is, open up.
And immediately his ears were opened, and the bonds of his tongue were loosed, and he began to speak truly.
And he forbade them not to tell anyone. But no matter how much She forbade them, they divulged it even more zealously.
And they marveled all the more and said: He does everything good; and makes the deaf hear, and makes the dumb speak.
In those days, when a great crowd of people had gathered and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples and said to them:
I have mercy on the people, who have remained with Me for three days now, and they have nothing;
and if I send them away without eating to their homes, they will faint on the way; and many of them came from far away.
And His disciples answered Him: How can anyone here satisfy them with bread in the wilderness?
And he asked them: How many loaves do you have? They said: seven.
And he commanded the people to lie down on the ground; and, having received the seven loaves and given praise, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute. And they distributed it to the people.
And they had a few fish; and having blessed these, he commanded them to be distributed.
And they ate and were filled; and they took the remnants of the pieces into seven baskets.
Those who ate were four thousand. And he let them go.
And then, entering the ship with His disciples, he arrived in the region of Dalmanuthan.
The Pharisees came out and began to contend with Him, asking Him for signs from heaven, tempting Him.
And he sighed in His spirit and said, “Why is this generation seeking a sign?” Truly I say to you, will a sign be given to this generation?
And, leaving them, he again entered the ship and crossed to the other side.
And His disciples forgot to take the loaves, and had nothing but one loaf with them in the ship.
And He commanded them, saying: Look, beware of the brew of the Pharisees and the brew of Herod.
And they thought with each other, saying that we have no bread.
Having understood, Jesus said to them: Why do you think that you have no bread? or do you not feel and do not understand? Or is your heart still stoned?
having eyes. don't you see? and having ears, do you not hear? and don't you remember?
when I broke five loaves into five thousand; How many baskets full of pieces did you collect? They say to Him: twelve.
And when seven by four thousand, how many baskets did you collect from the remaining pieces? They said seven.
And he said to them: How come you don’t understand?
They come to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and prayed to Him that He might be touched.
And, taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of the village, and, spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, asked him: “Does he see anything?”
And he looked up and said: I see men walking like trees.
Then he again laid his hands on his eyes and gave him insight. And he became established and saw everything in the light.
And he sent him to his house, saying: Do not enter the village and do not tell anyone in the village.
Jesus and His disciples went to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way asked His disciples: Who do people say that I am?
They answered: for John the Baptist, some for Elijah, and others for one of the prophets.
And He says: Who do you think I am? And Peter answering said to Him: You are the Christ.
And he forbade them not to tell anyone about Him.
And he began to teach them that it was fitting for the Son of Man to suffer many things and to be mocked by the elders and the high priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and on the third day. resurrect.
And without hesitation he spoke this word. And turning to Him, Peter began to contradict Him.
He, turning and looking at His disciples, rebuked Peter, saying: Get thee away from Me, Satan; You do not think about what is divine, but about what is human.
And, calling the people with His disciples, He said to them: whoever wants to walk after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me;
for whoever wants to save his soul will destroy it, but whoever loses his soul for My sake and the Gospel’s sake will save it.
And what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?
or what ransom will a man give for his soul?
And whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation; and the Son of man will be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.
And he said to them, “Truly I say to you; There are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Kingdom of God come in power.
And after six days Jesus killed Peter, James, and John, and led them up to a high mountain, alone, and was transfigured before them.
And His vestments became shining, white as snow, as a bleacher cannot whiten on earth.
And Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.
And having preached, Peter said to Jesus: Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; Let us make three tabernacles; One for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.
He didn't know what to say; for fear came upon them.
And a cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying: This is My Beloved Son; Listen to him.
And suddenly, looking up, they no longer saw anyone with them, except Jesus alone.
When they came down from the mountain, he forbade them not to tell anyone what they had seen, except when the Son of Man rose from the dead.
And they kept that word to themselves, asking each other: what is it to rise from the dead?
And they asked Him, saying: How is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
He answered and said to them: Elijah came first to arrange everything; and as it is written of the Son of man, that he will suffer many things and be humiliated;
But I tell you that Elijah also came, and they did to him whatever they wanted, as it is written about him.
And when he came to the disciples, he saw many people around them and scribes contending with them.
Immediately all the people, seeing Him, were amazed, and, running up, they bowed to Him.
And he asked the scribes: What are you arguing about among yourself?
And answering, one of the people said: Teacher! I brought my son to You, possessed by a dumb spirit:
and wherever he grabs him, he shakes him, and he emits foam, and grinds his teeth, and becomes numb. And He spoke to Your disciples, so that they should drive him out, and they would not be able to.
He answered him and said: O infidel generation! How long will I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? bring him to Me.
And they brought him to Him. And as soon as he saw Him, his spirit was shaken, and he fell to the ground and lay there, emitting foam.
And Jesus asked his father: How long has this happened to him? He said: from childhood;
and many times he threw him into both fire and water to destroy him; but, if you can, help us, have mercy on us.
Jesus said to him, “If you can believe anything, all things are possible to him who believes.”
And immediately the father of the boy cried out with tears and exclaimed: I believe, Lord! help my unbelief.
Jesus, seeing that the people were running together, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him: the spirit is dumb and deaf! I command you, get out of it and do not enter it any further.
And he cried out and shook him greatly, and went away; and he became as if dead, so that many said: he is dead.
Jesus took him by the hand and raised him up; and he stood up.
And when Jesus entered the house, the disciples began to ask Him privately: Why could we not drive him out?
And he said to them: this generation cannot come out of anything except prayer and fasting.
Coming out from there, they passed through Galilee; and He didn't want anyone to find out.
For He taught His disciples and told them that the Son of man would be delivered into the hands of men, and they would kill Him, and after He had been killed, He would rise again on the third day.
They did not understand those words, but were afraid to question Him.
Came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house, he asked them: what did they discuss among themselves on the way?
They were silent; for on the way they fought with each other to see who was the greatest.
And he sat down, called the twelve and said to them: whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.
And he took the child, placed him in the midst of them, and, embracing him, said to them:
whoever receives one of these children in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.
John answered Him, saying: Teacher! We saw that one man casts out demons in Your name, but does not follow us, and we forbade him, because he does not follow us.
Jesus said: Do not rebuke him; no one who has done power in My name can quickly speak evil of Me.
For whoever is not against you is for you.
And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name because you are Christ’s, truly I tell you, will not lose his reward.
And whoever causes one of these little ones to stumble who believes in Me; It would have been better for him if they hung a millstone around his neck and threw him into the sea.
And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; It is better for you, crippled, to enter into life, than having two hands to enter into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire,
where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
And if your foot offends you, cut it off; It is better for you to enter into life lame, than to have two feet and be cast into hell, into the unquenchable fire,
And if your eye causes you to sin, remove it; It is better for you to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into fiery hell,
For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.
Good salt; But if the salt is not salted, what will it be salted with? Have salt in yourself; and have peace among yourselves.
And from there he arose and came into the borders of Judea, on the other side of the Jordan. And again the people gathered to Him; and, according to His custom, He taught them again.
And the Pharisees came and asked, tempting Him: Is it worthy for a husband to reject his wife?
He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?”
They said: Moses commanded that a letter of divorce be written and that he be released.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment;
From the beginning of creation, God created husband and wife (Gen. 1:27);
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother
and he will cleave to his wife, and they will both become one flesh; and so they are no longer two, but the flesh is one;
So, what God has joined together, let not man separate.
In the house, His disciples again asked Him about the same thing.
And he said to them, “Whoever puts away his wife and marries another commits adultery against her;
and if a wife leaves her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.
They brought children to Him, so that He might touch them; The disciples did not allow those who brought them.
Seeing this, Jesus was indignant and said to them: Let the children come to Me and do not forbid them; of such is the Kingdom of God;
Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter into it.
And having embraced them, he laid his hands on them and blessed them.
When He went out on the path; someone ran up, fell on his knees before Him and asked him: Good Teacher! What must I do to inherit eternal life?
Jesus said to him: Why do you call me good? no one is good except God.
You know the commandments: do not commit adultery; Thou shalt not kill; do not steal; do not bear false witness; don't offend; Honor your father and mother (Ex. 20:12–17).
He answered and said to Him: The Teacher has kept all this from my youth.
But Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing; Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me, taking up the cross.
He, embarrassed by this word, went away, grieving, for he had great wealth.
And Jesus looked around and said to His disciples: How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter the Kingdom of God!
The disciples were horrified at His words. But Jesus answers them again: children! How difficult it is for those who trust in wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.
They were greatly amazed, saying to each other, “Who can be saved?”
Looking at them, Jesus said: With man it is impossible, but not with God; everything is possible with God.
And Peter began to say to Him: Behold, we have left everything and followed You.
Jesus answered them and said, “Truly I say to you; there is no one who has left home, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or his village, for My sake and the Gospel,
and would not have received now, in this time, a hundredfold houses and brothers, and sisters, and father, and mother, and children, and villages, in exile, and in the age to come, eternal life;
but many who are first will be last, and those who are last will be first.
They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus walked ahead, and they were terrified and, following Him, were in fear. And calling the twelve, he again began to tell them what would happen to Him:
behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him over to the Gentiles;
and they will mock Him, and beat Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him; and on the third day he will rise again.
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying: Teacher, we want You to do for us what we ask.
He said to them: what do you want him to do to you?
They said to Him: Let us sit at Your side, one on your right hand, and the other on your left, in Your glory.
But Jesus said to them: You do not know what you ask. Can you drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?
They answered: we can. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.”
but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not My business to give, but to whom it is prepared.
And when the ten heard it, they began to be angry with James and John.
Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that those who claim to be rulers of the nations rule over them, and their nobles possess them;
but let it not be so among you; and whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant;
and whoever wants to be first among you must be slave to everyone;
for the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a redemption for many.
We arrived in Jericho. And when He left Jericho with His disciples and with a multitude of people; Timaeus' son Bartimaeus, blind, sat along the way, begging for alms.
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout and say: Jesus, Son of David! have mercy on me.
And many forbade him to remain silent; but he began to shout even more: Son of David! have mercy on me.
And Jesus stopped and ordered to call him. They called the blind man and told him: don’t be afraid, get up, he’s calling you.
He threw off his robe, stood up and approached Jesus.
Answering him, Jesus said: What do you want from Me? The blind man said to Him: Teacher! let me see the light.
Jesus said to him: Go, your faith has saved you. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on his way.
When they approached Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, to the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples
and he said to them, Go to the village that is right in front of you; and when you enter it, you will immediately find a young donkey on a leash, which no one has sat on; having untied him, bring him;
and if anyone says to you, “What are you doing?” answer that the Lord requires him, and will immediately release him here.
They went and found a young donkey tied at the gate at the crossroads, and they untied him.
And some of those standing there said to them: What are you doing, untying the colt?
They answered them as Jesus commanded; and they released them.
And they brought the colt to Jesus, and they put their clothes on it, and he sat on it.
Many spread their clothes along the way; and others cut branches from the trees and spread them along the way.
Both those in front and behind exclaimed: Hosanna! blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Blessed is the coming kingdom in the name of the Lord our father David! Hosanna in the highest!
And Jesus entered Jerusalem and the church; and having examined everything, as the hour was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
And in the morning, when they left Bethany, he was hungry;
and seeing from afar a fig tree covered with leaves, he went to see if he could find anything on it; but, approaching it, he found nothing but leaves; for it was not yet time for figs.
And Jesus answered and said to her: From now on let no one eat fruit from you forever. And His disciples heard it.
We came again to Jerusalem. And Jesus entered the church and began to drive out those who were selling and buying in the church; and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling pigeons;
and did not allow anyone to carry any vessel through the church.
And he taught, saying to them: Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer; and you created from it a den of thieves ( Is. 56:7 )?
The scribes and high priests heard this and sought how to destroy Him; They feared Him, for all the people marveled at His teaching.
When it became late, He left the city.
And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw that the fig tree had dried up to the roots.
And, remembering, Peter said to Him: Rabbi, you see, the fig tree that You cursed has dried up.
And Jesus answered and said to them:
have faith in God. Truly I say to you, if anyone says to this mountain, “Move and be thrown into the sea.” and does not ponder in his heart, but has faith that it will happen according to his word; whatever he says will come true;
For this reason I tell you: whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and it will be done for you;
and when you stand in prayer, forgive whatever you have against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will forgive you your sins;
if you don’t let go; and your Father who is in heaven will not forgive you your sins.
And they came again to Jerusalem. And as He walked in the church, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him,
and they said to Him: By what authority are You doing these things? and who gave you such power to do this?
Jesus answered and said to them: I will ask you and I one word, and answer Me; and I will tell you by what authority I do this.
Was the Baptism of John from heaven, or from men? answer Me.
And they reasoned among themselves: if we say: from heaven, he will say: why didn’t you believe him?
And to say: from men, they were afraid of the people; for everyone revered John, that he was truly a prophet.
And they answered Jesus: We do not know. Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
And he began to speak to them in parables: A man planted a vineyard and surrounded it with a fence, and dug a winepress, and built a tower, and, giving it over to the vinedressers, he departed.
And in due time he sent a servant to the laborers, to receive from the tenants the fruits of the vineyard;
They grabbed him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
Again he sent another slave to them; and they smashed his head with stones, and released him in dishonor.
And again he sent another: they killed him too; and many others who were beaten and killed.
Having yet another son, his beloved, he finally sent him to them, saying: They will be ashamed of my son.
But the vinedressers said to each other: This is the heir; let's go kill him; and ours will be the inheritance.
And they took him, killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
What will the lord of the grapes do? He will come and destroy the vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.
Or have you not read this Scripture: the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;
did this come from the Lord and is marvelous in our eyes (Ps. 118:22-23)?
And they sought to seize Him, but they were afraid of the people: for they understood that he had spoken that parable about them. And leaving Him, they went away.
And they sent some of their Pharisees and Herodians to Him to catch Him in the word.
They came and said to Him: Teacher! We know that You are true and do not care about anyone, for You do not look at the faces of people, but truly teach the way of God. Is it worthy to give tribute to Caesar or not? Should we give or not?
But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them: Why are you tempting Me? Bring me a stash so I can see it.
They brought it; and says to them: Whose image and inscription is this? They say to Him: Caesar's.
And Jesus answered them and said, Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. And they marveled at Him.
The Sadducees also came to Him - they say there is no resurrection - and asked Him, saying:
Teacher! Moses wrote to us: if anyone's brother dies and leaves his wife, but leaves no children; then let his brother take his wife and raise up seed for his brother (Deut. 25:5).
There were seven brothers: the first took a wife and, dying, left no seed;
and the second took her, and died; and he left no seed, and neither did the third;
The seven took her for themselves and left no seed. After all, the wife died.
So in the resurrection, when they rise again, which of them will she be the wife? For seven had her as a wife.
And Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not deceived because you do not know the Scripture or the power of God?”
for when they rise from the dead, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage, but will be like angels in heaven;
about the dead who will rise, have you not read in the books of Moses, how at the bush God said to him: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob (Ex. 3:6)?
Not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. So you are greatly deceived.
And one of the scribes came, hearing them contending and seeing that Jesus answered them with justice, and asked Him: What is the first of all the commandments?
Jesus answered him: The first of all the commandments is: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord;
and may you love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength; This is the first commandment (Deut. 6:4–5).
And the second is similar to it: May you love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these (Lev.19:18).
And the scribe said to Him: It is true, Teacher, You have truly said that there is one God and there is no other but Him;
and to love Him with all your heart, and with all your mind, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
Jesus, seeing that he answered wisely, said to him: You are not far from the Kingdom of God. And then no one dared to question Him.
And giving answers, Jesus, teaching in the church, said: How do the scribes say that Christ is the son of David?
For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool (Ps. 109:1).
And when David himself calls him Lord: how is He his son? And a multitude of people listened to Him with sweetness.
And He said to them in His teaching: Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes and bow down to them in the marketplaces,
they love presiding at gatherings and first places at suppers;
those who devour the houses of widows and say prayers for a long time for show - they will receive greater condemnation.
And Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and watched as the people put money into the treasury. And many rich people put in a lot.
Having arrived, one poor widow contributed two mites, which is a coin.
And calling His disciples, He said to them: Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who sweep into the treasure storehouse;
for they all contributed out of their abundance; and out of her poverty she put in everything she had, all her food.
And when He left the church, one of His disciples said to Him: Teacher! look at the stones and the buildings!
And Jesus answered and said to him, “You see these great buildings.” Not one stone will be left unturned here, everything will be destroyed.
And when He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, opposite the church, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked Him privately:
tell us when this will happen, and what will be the sign when all this is about to happen?
Jesus, answering them, began to say: Be careful that no one deceives you.
For many will come in My name and say that it is I; and they will deceive many.
When you hear about battles and rumors of abuse, do not be horrified: for this is fitting; but this is not the end yet.
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be earthquakes in places, and there will be famines and riots. And that was the beginning of illness.
Be careful, you yourselves, for you will be handed over to judgment courts, and beaten in assemblies, and you will be presented before rulers and kings for My sake, as a testimony before them.
And it is fitting that the Gospel should first be preached to all nations.
When they lead you to betray you, do not worry first what to say to you, and do not hesitate; but whatever is given to you in that hour, then say it: for it is not you who will speak, but the Holy Spirit.
Brother will betray brother to death, and father will betray his child, and children will rise up against their parents and kill them.
And you will be hated by everyone for My name's sake; he who endures to the end will be saved.
When you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it is not proper (let the reader understand); Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains;
and if anyone is on the housetop, do not go into the house or enter to take anything out of his house;
and whoever is in the field, do not turn back to take your clothes.
Woe to them that are pregnant and to those who nurse at the breast in those days.
Pray that your flight will not happen in winter.
For in those days there will be such tribulation as there was not from the beginning of creation, which God created, even to this day, nor will there be.
And if the Lord had not stopped those days, all flesh would not have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he will put an end to those days.
Then, if someone says to you: behold, here is Christ, or: behold, there; don't believe it.
For false Christs and false prophets will arise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
You are watching. I told you everything before.
But in those days, after that tribulation. the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,
and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will move.
Then they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and much glory.
And then He will send His angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.
Learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branches become soft and put forth leaves, you know that the harvest is near:
so when you see, everything is coming true, know that it is close, at the door.
Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away, when all these things are done.
Heaven and earth will pass away; but My words will not pass away.
No one knows about that day or hour, not the Angels in heaven, not the Son, only the Father.
Watch, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come.
Just as a man, when he goes and leaves his house, gives authority to his servants, and to each his own work, and commands the gatekeeper to watch.
So you also watch, for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at rooster crow, or in the morning;
Yes, he will come suddenly and will not find you sleeping.
And what I tell you, I tell everyone: watch out!
It was two days before Passover and unleavened bread. And the chief priests and scribes sought how to take Him by cunning and kill Him;
but they said: just not on a holiday, so that there is no unrest among the people.
And when He was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, and reclined; a wife came with an alabaster of peace made from whole nard. valuable; and breaking the alabaster, she poured it on His head.
Others were indignant within themselves and said: why such a waste of the world?
For it could have been sold for more than three hundred pennies and distributed to the poor. And they grumbled at her.
But Jesus said: Leave her; Why are you embarrassing her? She did a good deed for Me.
For you always have the poor with you and, when you want, you can do good to them; You don't always have me.
She did what she could; prefaced the anointing of My Body for burial.
Truly I say to you; where this Gospel will be preached throughout the whole world, it will be said, in her memory, about what she did.
Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the high priests to betray Him to them.
When they heard it, they rejoiced and promised to give him pieces of silver. And he began to look for how to betray Him at a convenient time.
And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they had killed the Passover, His disciples said to Him: Where do you want, let us go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?
And he sent two of his disciples and said to them: go to the city, and a man will meet you carrying water in a jug; follow him
and where he enters, say to the owner of the house: The Teacher says: Where is the room where I can celebrate the Passover with My disciples?
and he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready; there prepare for us.
And His disciples went and came to the city, and found it as He had told them; and prepared the Passover.
And when evening came, He came with the twelve.
And as they reclined and ate, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”
They began to mourn and began to say to Him, one by one: Isn’t it me? and another: isn't it me?
He answered and said to them, “One of the twelve who dipped with Me in the dish.”
For the Son of man comes, as it is written of Him; but woe to man by whom the Son of man is betrayed; It would have been good for him if that man had not been born.
And as they ate, Jesus took the bread and blessed it, and broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take, eat.” this is my body.
And having received the cup, having given praise, he gave it to them; and everyone drank from it.
And he said to them: This is My Blood of the new testament, which is shed for many;
Truly I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink new wine in the kingdom of God.
And having sung, they went out and went to the Mount of Olives.
And Jesus said to them: You will all be offended because of Me this night; so it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered (Zechariah 13:7).
But then, when I rise again, I will precede you to Galilee.
Peter said to Him, “Even if everyone is offended, yet not I.”
And Jesus said to Him, Truly I say to you, today this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.
But he began to say even more forcefully: even if I die with You, I will not renounce You. Everyone said the same thing.
And they came to a village called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray.”
And he took with him Peter, James and John; and began to be horrified and sad.
And he said to them, My soul is sorrowful unto death; be here and watch.
And, going away a little, he fell to the ground and prayed that this hour would pass by from Him, if possible;
and said: Abba Father! everything is possible for You; Carry this cup past Me; but not what I want, but what You want.
He returned and found them sleeping, and said to Peter: Simon! are you sleeping! I couldn’t stay awake for even a single hour!
Watch and pray, so that you do not fall into misfortune. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
And again he went away and prayed, saying the same word.
And when he returned, he found them sleeping again: for their eyes were heavy; and did not know what to answer Him.
And he comes the third time and says to them: Are you still sleeping and resting? The end has come; the hour has come; behold, the Son of man is delivered into the hands of sinners;
get up, let's go; Behold, My betrayer has approached.
And then, as He also spoke, Judas, one of the twelve, comes, and with him a multitude of people with weapons and daggers, from the high priests and scribes and elders.
His betrayer gave them a sign, saying: Whomever I kiss, he is the one; take Him and lead Him safely.
And when he came, he immediately approached Him and said: Rabbi! Rabbi! and kissed Him.
And they laid their hands on Him and took Him.
One of those standing there drew a sword, struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his ear.
And Jesus answered and said to them, “You came out as if against a thief with weapons and swords to take Me;
Every day I was with you in the church and taught; and you did not take Me. But let the Scripture be fulfilled.
Then, leaving Him, everyone fled.
And one certain person, a young man, wrapped his naked body in a veil, followed Him; and they took that young man.
but he, leaving the veil, ran away from them naked.
And they brought Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests and scribes and elders gathered to him.
And Peter followed Him from afar, even into the courtyard of the high priest; and sat with the servants and warmed himself by the fire.
The chief priests and the whole congregation sought testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death; and were not found.
For many bore false witness against Him; but this evidence was not sufficient.
And others stood up and bore false witness against Him, saying:
We heard Him say: I will destroy this church made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.
But even such evidence was not enough.
Then, standing in the middle, the high priest asked Jesus: Why do You not answer anything, that they testify against You?
But He was silent and did not answer anything. Again the high priest questioned Him and said to Him: Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?
Jesus said: I am; and you will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven.
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “What more need do we have for witnesses?”
Have you heard the blasphemy: what do you think? They all condemned Him that He was guilty of death.
And others began to spit on Him and, covering His face, struck Him and said to Him: Prophesy; and the servants beat Him on the cheeks.
And while Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest's servants came
and seeing Peter warming himself and looking at him, she said, “You too were with Jesus of Nazareth.”
But he denied, saying: I don’t know and don’t understand what you are saying. And he went out into the front yard; and the rooster crowed.
The slave, seeing him again, began to say to those standing there: this one is one of them.
And he again denied. After a little, those standing there again began to say to Peter: “You are definitely one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech is like that.
He began to swear and swear that I do not know this Man of whom you are speaking.
And the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken to him: Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times; and started crying.
And early in the morning the high priests held a council with the elders and scribes, and the whole host, having bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
And Pilate asked Him: Are you the King of the Jews? He answered and said: You speak.
And the chief priests began to speak against Him much.
Pilate asked Him again: “Are you answering nothing?” You see how much they testify against You.
But Jesus did not answer anything here either, so Pilate was amazed.
For every holiday, he would release to them one prisoner whom they asked.
Then there was a certain man in prison named Barabbas and his comrades, who committed murder in a rebellion.
And the people began to shout and ask for what he had always done for them.
Pilate answered them, saying: Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?
For he knew that the high priests had betrayed Him out of envy.
But the high priests stirred up the people in order to release Barabbas to them.
Pilate, answering, again said to them: what do you want me to do to Him whom you call the King of the Jews?
They shouted again: crucify Him!
Pilate said to them, “What evil has He done?” But they began to shout even louder: crucify Him!
And Pilate, although the people could do what was pleasing, released Barabbas to them, and beat Jesus and handed him over to be crucified.
The soldiers took Him inside the courtyard, that is, to the praetorium, and collected all the spira,
and they clothed Him in scarlet, and wove together a crown of thorns, and laid it on Him;
and they began to bow to Him and say: Rejoice, King of the Jews!
And they beat Him on the head with a reed, and spat on Him, and bowed their knees and worshiped Him.
When they mocked Him, they took off His purple robe, clothed Him in His clothes and led Him out to be crucified.
And they took a certain Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was passing by, coming from the field, to carry His cross.
And they brought Him to the place of Golgotha, which means the Place of Execution.
And they gave Him wine and myrrh to drink; but He did not accept.
And those who crucified Him divided His garments, casting lots as to who should take what.
Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.
And the inscription of His guilt was: King of the Jews.
And with Him they crucified two thieves, one on His right and the other on His left.
And the word of the Scripture was fulfilled: and he was reckoned with the wicked (Is. 53:12).
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, nodding their heads and saying: Wow! destroys the church and builds it in three days!
Save yourself and come down from the cross.
Likewise, the high priests and the scribes, quarreling, said to each other: He saved others, but he cannot save himself.
Let Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross; Let us look and believe in Him. And those crucified with Him reviled Him.
And when the sixth hour came, darkness fell over all the land until the ninth hour.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice: Eloi! Eloi! lamma sabachthani? which means: My God! My God! Why did you leave me?
Some of those standing by heard it and said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”
And one ran, filled his lip with vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave Him a drink, saying: wait, let's see if Elijah comes to take Him down.
Jesus cried out with a great voice and gave up the spirit.
And the church curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom.
The centurion, who stood opposite Him, seeing that He, having cried out thus, gave up the ghost, said: Truly this man was the Son of God.
There were also wives here, watching from afar; among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James the little, and the mother of Josiah, and Salome;
the same ones, even when He was in Galilee, followed Him and served Him; and many others who came with Him to Jerusalem.
And when evening had already come (for it was Friday, that is, before Saturday),
Joseph came from Arimathea, a noble member of the council and himself a seeker of the Kingdom of God, boldly entered Pilate and asked for the Body of Jesus.
Pilate marveled that He was already dead, and, calling the centurion, asked him: Has He really died?
And, having learned from the centurion, he gave the Body to Joseph.
And he bought a shroud and took him off, wrapped him in the shroud, and laid him in a tomb hewn out of the rock, and rolled the stone to the door of the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary of Joseph looked where they laid Him.
And as the Sabbath passed, Mary Magdalene and Mary of James and Salome bought spices to go and anoint Him.
And the wounded early, on Saturday 13, come to the tomb, when the sun has risen,
and they say among themselves: Who rolled away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?
And when they looked, they saw that the stone had been rolled away; and he was very big.
And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in white clothes; and were horrified.
He says to them: do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, crucified. He arose; he's not here. This is the place where they laid Him;
but go, tell His disciples and Peter that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.
And they left and ran from the tomb; and trembling and horror seized them, and they did not say anything to anyone, they were so afraid.
Having risen, Jesus, on the morning of the first Saturday, appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he cast out seven demons.
She went and told those who were with Him, weeping and weeping;
but when they heard that He was alive and she saw Him, they did not believe.
After this he appeared in a different form to two of them going to the village.
And they returned and told the others; but they didn’t believe them either.
Finally, he appeared to the eleven who were reclining, and reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because those who saw Him risen did not believe.
And he said to them: Go into the whole world, preach the Gospel to every creature.
Whoever has faith and is baptized will be saved; and whoever does not have faith will be condemned.
The following signs will follow to those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons, they will begin to speak in new tongues;
they will take snakes; and if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them; They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
And so the Lord, having spoken to them, ascended into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
They went and preached everywhere, and the Lord helped them and confirmed the word with subsequent signs. Amen.
