On the immutability of the rules of previous Ecumenical, Local Councils and St. fathers.
This Holy Council recognized that the most beautiful and most important thing was that from now on, for the healing of souls and the healing of passions, the 85 rules accepted and approved by the holy and blessed fathers who came before us and handed down to us under the name of the rules of the holy glorious apostles should remain firm and inviolable. Since in these rules we are commanded to accept the “Ordinances” of the same holy apostles transmitted through Clement, into which the heterodox once, to the detriment of the Church, introduced something counterfeit, alien to piety and which darkened for us the splendid beauty of divine dogmas, then we properly, for the sake of the edification and safety of the Christian flock, rejected these “Ordinances”, absolutely not allowing the germs of heretical lies and not mixing them with the genuine and intact teaching of the apostles.
We also approve all the other sacred rules that our holy and blessed fathers set forth, namely: 318 God-bearing fathers gathered in Nicaea, the fathers in Ancyra, as well as in Neocaesarea, in Gangra, in Syrian Antioch and Phrygian Laodicea; in addition, 150 fathers who gathered in this God-protected reigning city; 200 fathers who previously established the Council in the Ephesian Metropolis; 630 holy and blessed fathers gathered at Chalcedon; likewise the Council of the Fathers in Sardica, as well as in Carthage; in addition, once again in this God-saved and reigning city the fathers gathered under Nectarios, the primate of this reigning city, and Theophilos, archbishop of Alexandria. We also confirm the rules of Dionysius, archbishop of the great city of Alexandria; Peter, Archbishop of Alexandria and martyr; Gregory the Wonderworker, Bishop of Neocaesarea; Athanasius, Archbishop of Alexandria; Basil, Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia; Gregory of Nyssa; Gregory the Theologian; Amphilochium of Iconium; Timothy I, Archbishop of the great city of Alexandria; Theophilos, archbishop of the great city of Alexandria; Cyril, Archbishop of Alexandria, and Gennady, Patriarch of this God-protected and reigning city. There is also the rule of Cyprian, the archbishop of an African country and a martyr, which was set forth by the Council that took place under him and received force according to the transmitted custom in the places of the previously mentioned primates, and only with them. And no one will be allowed to distort the above rules, or cancel them, or accept rules other than those established with false inscriptions, which were drawn up by those who dared to trade in the truth. If anyone is caught changing any of the above rules or trying to reject them, he will be guilty against this rule: he will suffer the penance that it prescribes, and through what he stumbled, he will receive healing.
