Prescribes to be guided by the spirit of prudence when imposing penances.
Those who have received from God the power to decide and bind must examine the nature of sin and the readiness of the sinner for conversion and then apply treatment appropriate to the ailment, so that due to immoderation in both, they do not make a mistake in saving the sufferer. For the disease of sin is not simple, but complex and diverse and sprouts many harmful shoots, from which the evil spreads abundantly and extends forward to the point that it is able to resist (ἀντνσταίη) the power of the healer. Therefore, anyone who discovers medical spiritual art must first consider the disposition of the sinner: whether he strives for health or, conversely, by his own morals he brings illness upon himself - and notice how he monitors his behavior at this time. And if he does not resist the doctor and heals his mental wound due to the fact that he uses the proposed medicines, then measure him mercy according to his merits. For God and the one to whom the pastoral administration is entrusted are all concerned with bringing back the lost sheep and healing those wounded by the serpent. So, the one who experiences the fruits of repentance and wisely guides a person called to the highest luminosity, cares not about pushing into the rapids of despair, not about loosening (ὑπενδοῦναι) the reins, thereby leading to a life of relaxation and neglect, but about certainly at least one of the methods, medicines or more severe and tart, or more soft and gentle, resist passion and struggle for the complete healing of the wound.
So, we must know both: both characteristic of acrivia and characteristic of custom, and with those who do not accept perfection, act in accordance with the model shown in legend, as Saint Basil teaches us.
