About the ban bishop. simony - penance for clergy and the closure of churches “for the sake of torturing gold.”
The preacher of truth, the divine Apostle Paul, establishing, as it were, a rule for the elders of Ephesus, but rather for the entire priestly class, said with boldness: I coveted neither silver, nor gold, nor clothing from anyone... In everything I showed you that, while working in this way, it is necessary to support the weak, believing that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:33,35). Therefore, we, taught by him, determine that the bishop should not, out of shameful self-interest, inventing excuses for sins, demand gold, or silver, or anything else from the bishops, or clergy, or monks subordinate to him. After all, the apostle says: The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor. 6:9) and: Children should not gather up wealth for their parents, but parents for their children (2 Cor. 12:14). So, if it turns out that someone, for the sake of extorting gold or something else, or due to some passion of his (ἰδιοπάθειαν), does not allow any of the clergy subordinate to him to serve and excommunicates one of the clergy under him, or closes the sacred temple so that divine services are not performed in it, then such a person, since he turns his fury on insensitive objects, is truly devoid of feelings, and let him endure the same, and his anger will turn on his head (Ps. 7:17), as a violator of the commandments of God and the apostolic decrees. After all, Peter, the chief of the apostles, also instructs: Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, not under compulsion, but willingly and pleasing to God. Not for vile gain, but out of zeal. Not by lording over the inheritance of God, but by setting an example to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive an unfading crown of glory (1 Peter 5:2-4).
