On the gentle treatment of the Donatists.
After everything that seemed to be directed to the benefit of the church had been examined and taken into account, by the motion and inspiration of the Spirit of God we chose to deal with the said people meekly and peacefully, although they, due to their disobedient way of thinking, are completely separated from the unity of the Lord's body. Thus, as far as it depends on us, let it be known to all those caught in communion and fellowship with them throughout the African episcopal regions, by what miserable error they are bound. Perhaps, if we meekly gather together those who differ in their views, as the apostle says, God will give them repentance so that they may know the truth and so that those who were captivated by the snares of the devil and submitted to his will will be freed (see 2 Tim. 2:25-26).

Μετὰ ταῦτα ψηλαφηθέντων καὶ κατανοηθέντων πάντων τῶν ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησιαστικῇ χρησιμότητι συντρέχειν δοκούντων, ἐπινεύσαντος καὶ ἐνηχήσαντος τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἐπελεξάμεθα ἠπίως καὶ εἰρηνικῶς διαπράξασθαι μετὰ τῶν μνημονευθέντων ἀνθρώπων, κἂν εἰ τὰ μάλιστα ἐκ τῆς τοῦ Κυριακοῦ σώματος ἑνώσεως ἀνησυχάστῳ διχονοίᾳ ἀποσχίζωσιν, ἵνα, ὅσον τὸ ἐν ἡμῖν, πᾶσι καθόλου γνωσθῇ τῆς τῇ ἐκείνων κοινωνίᾳ καὶ ἑταιρίᾳ σαγηνευθεῖσιν, ἀνὰ πάσας τὰς τῆς Ἀφρικῆς ἐπαρχίας, πῶς ἐλεεινῇ πλάνῃ κατεδέθησαν· ἴσως, καθὼς λέγει ὁ Ἀπόστολος, ἡμῶν ἐν ἡμερότητι συναγόντων τοὺς τὰ διάφορα φρονοῦντας, δώσει αὐτοῖς ὁ Θεὸς μετάνοιαν πρὸς τὸ ἐπιγνῶναι τὴν ἀλήθειαν, καὶ ἵνα ἀνασφήλωσιν οἱ ἐκ τῶν τοῦ διαβόλου βρόχων αἰχμαλωτισθέντες αὐτῷ εἰς τὸ αὐτοῦ θέλημα.[1]
