Monks should not have anything of their own. All their property should be assigned to the monastery, for Blessed Luke speaks of believers in Christ, who are an example of monastic life: Not one of them said that he was his own from his possessions, but he held all things in common to them (Acts 4:32). Therefore, those who wish to become monks are given the freedom to preliminarily dispose of their property and transfer it to whomever they wish, but, of course, to those whom the law does not prohibit. After all, after they enter monasticism, the monastery acquires power over all their property and they are not allowed to take care of their property or dispose of it. If anyone is convicted of having appropriated any property without transferring it to the monastery, and is enslaved by the passion of covetousness, then let the abbot or bishop take this property and, having sold it in the presence of many, distribute the proceeds to the poor and needy. And the one who, like Ananias in ancient times, decided to conceal this acquisition, the Holy Council determined to admonish him with appropriate penance. It is obvious that the Holy Council recognized that what it established as a rule for monks was also fair to observe in relation to nuns.
