We find that reckless renunciations of the world, made without preliminary testing, greatly damage monastic discipline: some, recklessly rushing into monastic life and neglecting the rigor of asceticism and constancy in it, again, unfortunately, turn to a carnal and voluptuous life. Because of this, the Holy Council determined: no one should be honored with the monastic image until, after the expiration of the 3-year period allotted to them for testing, they prove proven and worthy of such a life. The Council ordered that this be observed in every possible way, except in cases where some serious illness occurs that will force the time of the test to be shortened, or if a person turns out to be reverent and, still wearing secular robes, goes through monastic life, for for such a person even a 6-month period will be enough for a complete test. If anyone acts contrary to what is written, then let the abbot be deprived of his abbess and the state of subordination will serve as a punishment for his outrage, and let the one tonsured into monasticism be transferred to another monastery in which strict monastic rules are observed.
