Orthodox calendar, August 17 St. George the Pilgrim St. George the Pilgrim was born in 1864, in Şugag (today in Alba county) of pious parents, at the time when Transylvania was part of the Habsburg Empire.

From an early age he ate little, fasting, and loved solitude, having great joy in praying in the village church, even when there were no services, especially at night; and during the day, when he was with the cattle, he retired to hidden places and did many meditations, thinking about divine things. After he learned to read, he prayed with the Psalter, so that he learned it by heart.

At the age of 24, he joined, through the Sacrament of Marriage, a young faithful woman named Pelagia, being blessed by God with five children. As a husband and father he did not neglect his spiritual skills, fulfilling the works of faith with even greater piety and seeking first the kingdom of God and His justice.

Being merciful and devoid of greed, he always showed mercy to the poor, although he himself lived in poverty. He was not disturbed by the reprimands of those close to him, but told everyone with confidence and peace: "Don't worry, God is taking care to feed us; the duty...
