This year, on July 25, in the old style, I am reading about St. Anna, the mother of the Virgin, and I am interested in how exactly it is celebrated in Plovdiv. The gospel of "he who is not with me is against me" always makes me think about what I do during the day with the children. Who will go to the vespers at St. Marina?

My wife and I always read that Romans 13 bit about owing no man anything but love on the old calendar. In Plovdiv they usually have the evening service at St. Marina around 6, same as most years. The Gospel always makes me think twice about how much time I waste arguing instead of just doing the next right thing with the grandkids.

This year, too, on July 25th according to the old style, Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary, falls. In Novosibirsk we usually go to church for vespers at six, just like in Plovdiv. And from the Gospel about “whoever is not with Me is against Me,” I always think about how much time I waste in the kitchen on empty conversations instead of having a proper conversation with my son.

Yeah, that Gospel always hits me too—makes me pause when I'm snapping at the kids over little stuff instead of just being with them. We try to catch the evening service at our parish here around 6 most years, same as you all in Plovdiv and Novosibirsk. This Gospel often resonates with me too - especially when my son comes for the weekend, and instead of talking to him, I start talking to my neighbors over the phone. That line about every careless word really does make me think twice when I'm tired and short with my sister after a long shift at the shop. We've been trying to bake something simple together on those feast evenings instead of just rushing through dinner. Does your husband have a favourite bit in the Romans passage that always comes up at the table?

Yeah, that bit about every idle word in the Gospel always gets me too, especially after a long shift on the bus when the lads are winding each other up at home. We read the Romans passage out loud at tea sometimes and my wife points out how the love bit lines up with not snapping over whose turn it is to do the washing up. Does your husband have a favourite verse in those ten?

I, too, have this passage in the Gospel often pop up in my head, especially when, instead of playing with blocks with my daughter, I start telling her something about “but Aunt Masha again...”. In Tula this year on Angel’s Day I’ll just bake a cherry pie, as always, nothing special. Does your son come to Novosibirsk for a long time or just for the weekend?

Thank you, Natalya, this passage from the Gospel often comes up for me, especially when, instead of just sitting with a fishing rod on the Volga, I start going over in my head who said what at the parish. And cherry pie is just what we need, in Samara my wife bakes the same thing, only the dough is made with sour cream. Is your son coming to Novosibirsk for a long time?

Thank you, Ivan, I also often have this passage from Matthew in my head when, instead of praying, I begin to mentally judge everyone. And cherry pie with sour cream is delicious, my dough is usually made with kefir, I’ve tried both options. My son has been in Novosibirsk for three years now and doesn’t complain, but in the summer he still longs to go home to the Volga.

This passage from the Gospel also grabs my attention, especially when, instead of just sitting with embroidery, I start replaying in my head what my neighbor on the stairs said yesterday. And cherry pie is a good idea; in Yekaterinburg I always make it with frozen cherries, even in winter. Is your son coming to Tula for a long time?

Thank you, Olga, this passage from Matthew also works for me as a reminder, especially in the evenings, when fatigue sets in. I also make kefir pie more often, and sometimes the sour cream curdles. Where is the Volga? My grandchildren are in St. Petersburg, but in the summer we go with them to the bay; they are also drawn to the water.

Thank you, Sophia, I also have this passage from Matthew often spinning in my head when the tongue begins to work faster than the head. I always make pie with kefir better than with sour cream, yes. And the Volga is near Nizhny, and it grew up in those parts. Grandchildren in St. Petersburg are good, the bay is also water, only salty.

Thank you, Sophia, I also get goosebumps from Matthew 12:30–37 in the evening, when I no longer have the strength to follow the words. Kefir pie is also more reliable for me, sour cream gets capricious in the heat. And my husband and I most often go to the Volga near Samara, there are quiet places near the Zhiguli.
