Saint Silouan and Discernment in the Use of Patristic Sayings

The feast of Saint Silouan the Athonite, celebrated on September 24, offers an opportunity to consider how we bring the words of the saints into the lives of the faithful. In particular, the saying “Keep thy mind in hell, and despair not,” which the saint testifies he received from Christ, calls for careful interpretation. It is bound up with his personal experience of grace and his profound ascetic struggle.

The question is not whether we may repeat this saying, but how we interpret it and to whom we address it. It is one thing to learn hope and humility from it, and quite another to recommend it indiscriminately as spiritual counsel and an ascetic practice for everyone. The universal significance of a spiritual teaching does not imply that it should be applied uniformly.

The Saying in the Context of the Saint’s Experience

Archimandrite Zacharias Zacharou distinguishes between Silouan’s grace-filled spiritual state and the ways in which the spirit of his teaching can be embraced in everyday life. Patience in affliction and hope in God’s mercy are ways of sharing in this spirit, without requiring us to reproduce the saint’s particular experience.
