The enemy filled the country with ruins, plundered its wealth, put to death a multitude of civilians and fled, dragging behind him a much greater multitude of prisoners. But the defending general regrouped his forces. He fought back. He struck and defeated the enemy in the heart of his kingdom, in his very capital. He freed the captives and brought them back home, along with the looted treasures.

And yet!

People were saved, but not all. The liberating general could not bring the dead back to life, nor save so much of the booty as had already been scattered and wasted. He could not save what had already slipped out of his hands for good.

But there is a general, "great king over all the earth", who has the power to correct everything. Who can take back what has been lost, what has been destroyed, what has been slain. He can make everything back to how it was before and even better.

He is the victorious Christ, who comes and recreates what man has lost. That is why he diligently makes sure that no part of it is left damaged. She takes on him and lifts from her place…
