September 1955 – The persecution of the Greeks of Constantinopletranslated

By the term "September" we mean the pogrom unleashed by the Turkish mob, under the guidance of the Menderes government, against the populous and prosperous Greek community of Istanbul on September 6 and 7, 1955. As a result, the 100,000 Greeks living in the city at that time gradually shrunk and today barely exceed 2,000. In 1955 our neighboring country was ruled by Adnan Menderes - an "early Erdogan" - and the Democratic Party. I read it carefully. That number you say, from 100,000 to just 2,000 today, makes you think how quickly an entire community can disappear. In our church in Gjirokastër, we have several families who came from Istanbul after those years, still talking about the houses that were taken in one night.

Yes, that 100,000 to 2,000 figure makes you think how easily a community disappears when violence starts. In our hospital in Korça, we had an old woman from Istanbul who told us how they took her clothes shop on the night of September 6 and ran away with a suitcase. Do you ever ask those families from Gjirokastra if they still keep any keys or pictures of the old house?
