Speech on the Gospel passage Matt. (5:14-19)

There were no chandeliers in the catacombs. A single oil lamp, inserted in a niche dug in the pomerite, and faces around smelling of moisture, bread, death. That was all. And yet, no one knows how, that faint light rose to the surface of the empire and disturbed its sleep. The persecutors looked for it with torches, but they did not find it, because it was burning among the people. This paradox endured for three centuries, years of blood, and then, under the sandals of the Gentiles, without a church, without a title, in the soil, the Church was fixed, as never since.

In the catacombs, everything really rested on living faith, and not on gold and marble. This is what always amazes me in the article: how one small oil in a niche could disturb an entire empire. And when they came out into the light and embraced the authorities, this “favor” to each other immediately began. It's a pity that it's still like this.

I agree, Natalya, it was faith in the catacombs that was like butter in a niche - simple, but real. And when they came out and began to “lend” each other peace and purple, the light dimmed. I’m curious, how do you think this living thing can be preserved in our parishes today, without unnecessary gilding?
