The restored, by the Ministry of Culture, western wing of the historic Holy Monastery of Agios Dionysios in Olympus was given to the monastic community, citizens and visitors of Pieria, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Culture. The Monastery was founded in the 16th century, on the slopes of Mount Olympus and was inextricably linked to the religious, historical and cultural heritage of the region. The old Monastery of Agios Dionysios was built in the 16th century, at an altitude of about 850 meters, in the Enipea gorge, at a distance of about 17 kilometers from Litochoro, Pieria. It suffered repeated disasters: In 1753, 1790, 1822 and 1877, with the most devastating in 1943, when it was blown up by the occupying troops.
The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, in her greeting, said "For the Ministry of Culture, my colleagues and I, it is a real blessing that we are here today, at the completion of such a complex and extremely difficult technical project. The restoration of a monument is always, for us, a day of celebration. Particularly, when the restored monument regains its original destination and the use for which it was founded.
