July 10, 2026 · 1 min read

On the afternoon of Thursday, July 9, in the classrooms of the School of Byzantine Music of the Metropolis of Thessaloniki, which is housed in the facilities of the Educational and Cultural Foundation "Agios Grigorios o Palamas", the annual graduation exams of the School's students were held. In addition to the students of the School, students of the School of Theology of the Holy Cross in Boston also participated in the exams, who were accompanied by the Chancellor of the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia, Washington DC, Mr. George Theodoridis.

The exams were attended by the Pastor, Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, Mr. Philotheos, the Director of the Educational and Cultural Foundation (EK.PI.), Fr. Cherubim Tsinoglou, and the examiners - professors from various Schools of Byzantine Music in the country.

After the examination process, the Bishop blessed all the participating students and teachers and spoke about the importance of learning Byzantine music, which is an integral part of the liturgical life of our Church. The Pastor wished everyone enlightenment and strength from God.

Χαίρομαι που ήρθαν και οι τουδεράς από τη Βοστώνη με τον κ. Γεώργιο Θεοδωρίδη. It seems that the School keeps alive the βυζαντινή music even beyond the borders. Ο Δεσπότης Φιλόθεος το εἰμέρες το χρήμενος, είναι της της λατρείας Μας, not just a lesson.

I'm glad that students from Boston came with George Theodoridis. Here in St. Petersburg we also appreciate it when Byzantine singing does not remain only on paper, but lives in the church. Vladyka Philotey said correctly - this is part of our service, without it much is lost.

I'm glad that those students from Boston came with Mr. Georgios Theodoridis, it can be seen that the work from the school in Thessaloniki is going beyond the borders. And Metropolitan Filotheos spoke correctly: without the Byzantine chant, the service seems to be no longer the same. Here in Sibiu, more such open exams would be welcome.

I'm glad that students from Boston came with Mr. Georgios Theodoridis. In our parish in Gdańsk, we also try to sing Byzantine during services, but it is not the same as systematic learning in such a school. It is good that Metropolitan Philotheos reminded that it is not just an object, but a part of the liturgy itself.

Yes, I was also glad to see those students from Boston came - it shows that the school in Thessalonica really matters. Here in Sibiu, at the Mitropolie school, we would need more open exams to attract other young people, not just those who already sing in the choir. Do you think we could do something similar in the fall?

Yes, it's really nice that the students from Boston came, it shows that the music is really spreading. Here in Niš, we often sing the same tunes at church celebrations, so I'm glad to see that it's not just for Greece. Do you think something similar could be organized in our country?

Yes, the Boston students really gave the exam an international air, you can see that the school has weight. Here in Sibiu, it would be good to try something similar in the fall, perhaps with an open session for young people who do not yet sing in the choir. Which day would you say would catch better, October or November?
