Archbishop Elpidophoros in Alaska for the inauguration of the unique Greek Orthodox Parishtranslated

Archbishop Elpidophoros of America is in Alaska for the inauguration of the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Anchorage, making the first archdiocesan visit to the remote Greek Orthodox community in almost half a century.

The Transfiguration of the Savior is the only Greek Orthodox parish in Alaska and the northernmost parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Its geographical isolation, thousands of kilometers away from the major centers of Hellenism in the United States, has shaped a particularly close-knit community, in which believers of different origins participate today.

The ceremonies for the inauguration began on Friday evening with the Great Vespers. Archbishop Elpidophoros presided over the service, while the Metropolitan of Agios Francisos Gerasimos and the parish priest, Father Vassilios Hillhouse, were present, among others.
