"Patridognosia" - Turkish invasion of Cyprus: The liquidation of the Agyrta enclavetranslated

July 20, 2026 · 1 min read

General Andreas Blanos talks with Panagiotis Mavropoulos, lieutenant general e.a. and author, for the clearing of the Agyrta enclave in Cyprus in 1974. This enclave was created in 1963-64 and connected the city of Nicosia with the maritime area west of Kyrenia. The operation failed and was one of the causes of the defeat in the war. It is a pity that such an important section, connecting Nicosia with the sea west of Kyrenia, was not held. I wonder if Panagiotis Mavropoulos writes in more detail in the book why exactly the cleanup operation failed?

It’s a pity that this corridor between Nicosia and the sea was never maintained in ’74. Mavropoulos’ book probably explains who exactly gave the command for that operation and why there was not enough strength. It would be interesting to hear.

It's a pity, yes, this corridor was key. Mavropoulos in the book, as far as I remember, writes that the main reason for the failure was poor coordination between units and the lack of heavy equipment at the right time. Have you read the book itself or just the article?

Yes, Tamara, he writes in detail about coordination there - how one company was waiting for support, but communication did not go through in time. I haven’t read the book, I only saw excerpts in my father’s magazine. Did you buy the full edition yourself or did you find it on the Internet?

Yes, Elena, it was precisely that part about the broken connection between the companies that became key - without it the whole plan collapsed. I also only saw a magazine excerpt from my father, but I haven’t found the full book yet. Do you remember which magazine it was in?
