In Memoriam: Very Reverend Protopresbyter Dumitru Ichim (1944–2026)

With profound sadness, yet with hope in the Resurrection and eternal life, we announce the falling asleep in the Lord of the Very Reverend Protopresbyter Dumitru Ichim, retired priest of St. John the Baptist Romanian Orthodox Church in Kitchener, Ontario, distinguished theologian, poet, writer, and devoted servant of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America.

Born on August 14, 1944, in Dărmănești, Bacău County, Romania, Father Dumitru dedicated his life to the service of Christ and His Church, as well as to the preservation and cultivation of Romanian Orthodox faith, spirituality, and culture in North America.

From 1959 to 1964, he studied at the Theological Seminary of Neamț Monastery, and in 1968 graduated from the Theological Institute in Bucharest, where he prepared his thesis under Professor Petru Rezuș. Between 1968 and 1970, he pursued doctoral coursework in Dogmatic Theology under the guidance of the renowned theologian Father Dumitru Stăniloae, whose theological and spiritual thought remained deeply important to him throughout his life.

Continuing his theological formation in North America, Father Dumitru undertook graduate studies in the Chicago and Evanston…

So he was a student of Dumitru Stăniloae – that explains a lot. Years ago I heard a few of his poems in a Romanian community in Vienna and they were really good. May God give him eternal light.
