Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew receives honorary doctorate from University of Chichester

The University of Chichester has awarded Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew an Honorary Doctor of Divinity in recognition of his contribution to theological scholarship, inter-Christian and interfaith dialogue, peace, human rights and environmental protection.

The Ecumenical Patriarch, who has served as Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch since 1991, received the distinction during his week-long visit to the United Kingdom.

The University highlighted Patriarch Bartholomew’s decades-long efforts to strengthen relations among Christian traditions and promote dialogue between different faith communities, as well as his advocacy for religious freedom and human dignity.

Particular emphasis was placed on his environmental work. Internationally known as the “Green Patriarch,” Bartholomew has consistently drawn attention to the moral and spiritual dimensions of environmental protection, bringing together religious leaders, scientists and other experts through international initiatives and conferences.
