The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America concluded its 48th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress in Cleveland, Ohio, from June 30 to July 2, gathered under the theme "Rise & Build." Delegates approved the 2027-2028 archdiocesan budgets, while workshops focused on welcoming and integrating a growing wave of inquirers and new converts, building young adult ministries that endure, and forming women and girls for leadership. Representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, among them Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria and Metropolitan Philotheos of Thessaloniki, took part alongside Archbishop Elpidophoros of America. A delegation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople visited Rome from June 27 to July 1 for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, continuing the long-standing annual exchange of visits between the two Churches. Led by Metropolitan Emmanuel of Chalcedon, the delegation attended the papal Liturgy on June 29 and met Pope Leo XIV, who invited all Christians to prepare together to mark the anniversary of the Redemption accomplished by Christ, to be observed in the year 2033. The Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America reported a full season of pastoral life, as Metropolitan Saba carried out parish visits that included the 75th anniversary of a community and Great Vespers at several churches. The archdiocesan magazine, The WORD, devoted a special edition to fifty years of the charitable work of the Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch, even as the Antiochian Village summer camps for young people got under way. Ahead of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, the Orthodox Church in America released a Service of Thanksgiving to Almighty God, prepared in response to a statement of its Holy Synod of Bishops. The service gives parishes a way to mark the civic milestone in prayer and gratitude. (Orthodox Church in America, https://www.oca.org/news)

In Europe, a proposal to place Patriarch Kirill of Moscow on a new European Union sanctions list has become a point of contention among member states. Several governments, reportedly including Italy and Bulgaria, have voiced reservations, with Bulgaria, a historically Orthodox nation, cautioning that sanctioning a religious leader could be perceived as targeting religious belief. The measure remains under discussion within the Union. (Euronews, https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2026/06/09/eu-targets-russias-patriarch-kirill-in-new-sanctions-proposal)

Pope Leo XIV traveled to the Italian island of Lampedusa on July 4 to pray for migrants who have died crossing the Mediterranean Sea, laying flowers at the tombs of shipwreck victims, visiting the "Gateway to Europe" memorial, and celebrating Mass. Following the example set by Pope Francis, he chose one of the principal landing points for migrants in order to draw attention to their suffering and to remember those lost at sea. The Vatican confirmed a new rupture with the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X after the Society consecrated four bishops at Econe, Switzerland, on July 1 without papal mandate. Church authorities stated that those involved had incurred automatic excommunication and described the consecrations as a schismatic act, after Pope Leo XIV had appealed for reconciliation. The events reopen a division within the Roman Catholic Church that dates back several decades. In the United States, Catholic communities held a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage from July 2 to 5, centered at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia and joined to the 250th anniversary of the nation. Pilgrimages of this kind, which bring clergy, families, and young people together onto city streets, offer one example of public Christian witness and community building.
