Denmark welcomes “binding” agreement with US on Greenland

Denmark today welcomed the “binding” agreement announced by Donald Trump, which, according to the US President, gives Washington “permanent control” over Greenland’s security and prohibits the establishment of Russian and Chinese bases in the Arctic territory.

Trump had triggered a major crisis in relations with the EU by threatening that the United States would take control of Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic.

Denmark and Greenland welcomed the agreement, saying they would sign it on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York next week.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the agreement “will strengthen security” in the Arctic.

“A long period of uncertainty will hopefully be followed by a binding agreement that will strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic and, consequently, our common security within NATO and Europe,” Rasmussen said in a social media post.

The Danish Foreign Minister also noted that the agreement respects the “red lines” set by Copenhagen.
