Charity event for the Gomel social boarding house "Vasilievsky"translated

September 3, 2026 · 1 min read

Caring for older people and people with disabilities includes paying attention to their daily needs. The Gomel diocese regularly provides assistance to social institutions of the city. On September 3, 2026, with the blessing of His Eminence Stefan, Archbishop of Gomel and Zhlobin, a charity event was organized for the Gomel social boarding house “Vasilievsky”.

As part of the campaign, the department for social service and church charity donated 300 kilograms of sugar to the institution.

Today, 158 people live in the boarding house. Conditions for living and feasible work have been created here for elderly people and people with disabilities. On the territory of the institution there is a garden and a vegetable garden where wards grow vegetables, fruits and other crops. Part of the harvest is stored for the winter: it is used to make preserves, pickles and jam.

The donated assistance will be used in the daily life of the boarding house and in preparing food for the winter period.

That's a solid amount of sugar for 158 people. Good to hear they'll put it toward the winter preserves from their own garden – those jars of jam and pickles must make a real difference in the daily meals. Nice work by the social department.

Well, 300 kg of sugar sounds practical for 158 people, especially when they make preserves and jams from what they grow in the garden. I'm glad the diocese regularly helps like this, I think those jars of cabbage or jam make a real difference in the winter. Congratulations to the social department.

It is good that they gave 300 kilos of sugar. For 158 people, preserves and jams from their garden really add flavor in winter. The diocese regularly helps, that's right.

Yes, 300kg seems like a good amount when you know they make jam and pickles from their harvest. In our parish, I once helped an asylum with sugar, and they told me that they had just enough for the plum compotes they set aside. Do you think it would be useful to send more oil or flour next time?

Yes, 300 kg of sugar really fits 158 people well when they make preserves and jams from what they get from their garden. Here in Iași, we saw how a kilogram of sugar makes a difference to a pot of plum jam. Do you think it would help more if they also sent some empty jars next time?

Yes, 300 kg of sugar goes well with jam and pickles, especially since they have a garden and use it seriously. Here in Sibiu, when I helped a hostel, I saw that the oil runs out even faster than the flour. Do you think it would be more practical to send oil next time?
