Athonite delegation from Esphigmenou Monastery visited Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (VIDEO)

July 11, 2026 · 1 min read

Archimandrite Bartholomew, Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou on Mount Athos, visited Ukraine accompanied by a group of monks. At the invitation of Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine, he presided over the Festal Vespers, Matins, and the Divine Liturgy marking the feast of Saint

Anthony of Kyiv, founder of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra.

During the Divine Liturgy, celebrated on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, Metropolitan Epifaniy was present in prayer. The hymns were chanted by the choir of Archon Protopsaltis of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Grigorios Daravanoglou.

The presence of the Abbot and the Athonite fathers from the monastery where St. Anthony received his monastic formation highlighted in a particularly moving way the centuries-old and unbreakable spiritual bonds linking Mount Athos, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the Church of Kyiv.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Abbot Bartholomew addressed the faithful and reflected on the historical journey of St. Anthony, who departed from Kyiv, received the monastic habit at the Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou, and, having received the blessing of Abbot Theoktistos, returned to his…

It is good that Abbot Bartholomew of Esphygmenus personally came to Kiev and took the monks. We all know that St. Anthony became a monk there, but it's still nice when they come directly from Athos to the Lavra. I have one question - what did Father Bartholomew say to the congregation?

Mariam, I completely agree with you that it is especially nice to come from Athos in person. Finally, Father Bartholomew spoke very briefly about the return of St. Anthony to Kiev and said that the blessing of Esphygmenu is still alive on the land of Ukraine. What do you think, should such visits be repeated often in the future?

Yes, Ketevan, Father Bartholomew's phrase "the blessing is alive to this day" has remained with me too. When the monks of Esphygmenus come and perform the liturgy like this, it really has a different taste. Do you think they will invite you to Antony's Day again next year?

Yes, that phrase from Abbot Bartholomew about the blessing still being alive really stuck with me too. It's nice to see the direct link from Esphigmenou where St. Anthony was tonsured all those years ago. Do you think they'll invite them back for next year's feast?

I am glad that Abbot Bartholomew of Esphigmen personally came with the brothers and celebrated the Liturgy in the Lavra. This phrase "the blessing of Esphigmen still lives on Ukrainian soil" really hit home for me because St. Antoni returned to Kiev from there. Do you think they will invite them to July 10 next year?

Yes, the phrase about the blessing of Esphygmen, who "still lives on the Ukrainian land", stuck in my heart. It is good that Father Bartholomew and his brothers came from the monastery where Saint Anthony got his haircut and served in the Lavra itself. I wonder if they would be invited again next year?
