¹ The memory of a just man is praised, and the Lord’s blessing is upon his head. Blessed is one who has found wisdom; a mortal who knows understanding. To import her is better than treasures of gold and silver. She is more valuable than precious stones; nothing of value equals her worth. Justice proceeds from her mouth; she bears law and mercy on her tongue. Therefore, my children, listen to me, for I speak weighty things. And blessed is the one who keeps my ways. For my goings out are the goings out of life, and favour is prepared from the Lord. Therefore I exhort you, and utter my voice to the children of humankind. Because I, Wisdom, have prepared counsel, knowledge and understanding. I have called on them. Counsel and sureness are mine; prudence is mine, strength is mine. I love those who are my friends, while those who seek me will find grace. You innocent, then, understand cunning; you untaught, take it to heart. Listen to me, for I will speak weighty things, and I will open right things from my lips. Because my throat will meditate truth; lying lips are abominable before me. All the words of my mouth are with justice, there is nothing crooked in them nor twisted. They are all straight for those who understand, and right for those who find knowledge. For I teach you what is true, that your hope may be in the Lord and that you may be filled with spirit.

¹ The mouth of a just man distils wisdom; the lips of men know graces. The mouth of the wise meditates wisdom; justice delivers them from death. When a just man dies hope is not lost; for a just son is born for life, and among his good things he will pluck the fruit of justice. There is light at all times for the just, and they will find grace and glory from the Lord. The tongue of the wise knows what is good, and wisdom will take its rest in their hearts. The Lord loves holy hearts; while all who are blameless in the way are acceptable to him. The wisdom of the Lord will enlighten the face of the understanding; for she anticipates those who desire her before they know it, and is easily contemplated by those who love her. One who rises for her at dawn will not toil, and one who keeps vigil because of her will be without care. For she goes about seeking those who are worthy of her, and shows herself favourably to those on her paths. Wickedness will never prevail against wisdom. Because of this I too became a lover of her beauty and became her friend, and I sought her out from my youth, and I sought to take her as my bride, because the Master of all things loved her, for she is an initiate of the knowledge of God and one who chooses his works. Her toils are virtues; she herself teaches sobriety and prudence; justice and courage, than which things nothing is more useful in human life. If anyone longs for much experience, she knows how to compare things of old and those that are to come. She knows the twists of words and the explanations of riddles. She foresees signs and wonders and the outcomes of seasons and times. And to all she is a good counsellor. Because immortality is in her, and fame in the fellowship of her words. Therefore I appealed to the Lord and besought him and said from my whole heart, ‘God of my Fathers and Lord of mercy, who made all things by your Word, and established humanity by your Wisdom to be sovereign over the creatures that had come into being by you, and to order the world in holiness and justice, give me Wisdom who sits by your throne, and do not reject me from among your children, for I am your servant and the son of your maid servant. Send her out from your holy dwelling and from the throne of your glory, that she may be present with me and teach me what is well pleasing before you. And she will guide me with knowledge and guard me with her glory. For all the thoughts of mortals are wretched and their ideas are unstable.’

¹ When a just man is praised, peoples will be glad; for immortality is his memory, because it is known both to God and humankind, and his soul is pleasing to the Lord. Therefore, O men, desire wisdom, and long for it and be instructed. For her beginning is love and keeping of laws. Honour Wisdom, that you may reign for ever. I will declare the mysteries of God to you and not hide them from you. Because he is both the guide of Wisdom and the One who sets right the wise. In his hand are all prudence, and knowledge of works. Wisdom, the artificer of all things, taught me, for in her is an understanding spirit, holy, brightness of the eternal light and image of the goodness of God. She makes friends of God and prophets. She is more lovely than the sun, and beyond every order of the stars. If compared to light, she is found before it. She delivered her devotees from toils, and guided them in straight paths. She gave them holy knowledge and protected them from those who lay in ambush for them. She awarded them a mighty contest, that all might know that true religion is more powerful than all, and that wickedness can never prevail against Wisdom, nor will justice in passing sentence overlook evil people. For they said in themselves, not reasoning correctly, ‘Let us overpower the just one, let us not spare his saintliness, nor feel reverence for the aged grey hairs of an elder. Let our strength be law. Let us lie in ambush for the just, for he is a hindrance to us and he is opposed to our works and alleges the sins of our upbringing. He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord. He has become a reproof to our thoughts. He is grievous for us even to look at, for his life is not like others and his paths are quite different. We are reckoned by him to be counterfeit, and he keeps away from our ways as from filth. He calls the end of just people blessed. Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen to him at the end. Let us examine him by insult and torture, that we may know his forbearance and make trial of his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for he will have protection from his own words.’ This was how they argued, and they were deceived, for their wickedness had blinded them. And they did not know the mysteries of God, nor did they judge that you alone are God, who have authority over life and death, who save in time of tribulation and deliver from every ill; pitying and merciful, giving grace to your holy ones, and by your right arm resisting the proud.

¹ DE cierto, de cierto os digo: El que no entra por la puerta en el corral de las ovejas, mas sube por otra parte, el tal es ladrón y robador.

² Mas el que entra por la puerta, el pastor de las ovejas es.

³ A éste abre el portero, y las ovejas oyen su voz: y á sus ovejas llama por nombre, y las saca.

⁴ Y como ha sacado fuera todas las propias, va delante de ellas; y las ovejas le siguen, porque conocen su voz.

⁵ Mas al extraño no seguirán, antes huirán de él: porque no conocen la voz de los extraños.

⁶ Esta parábola les dijo Jesús; mas ellos no entendieron qué era lo que les decía.

⁷ Volvióles, pues, Jesús á decir: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Yo soy la puerta de las ovejas.

⁸ Todos los que antes de mí vinieron, ladrones son y robadores; mas no los oyeron las ovejas.

⁹ Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entrare, será salvo; y entrará, y saldrá, y hallará pastos.

¹ PORQUE la ley, teniendo la sombra de los bienes venideros, no la imagen misma de las cosas, nunca puede, por los mismos sacrificios que ofrecen continuamente cada año, hacer perfectos á los que se allegan.

² De otra manera cesarían de ofrecerse; porque los que tributan este culto, limpios de una vez, no tendrían más conciencia de pecado.

³ Empero en estos sacrificios cada año se hace conmemoración de los pecados.

⁴ Porque la sangre de los toros y de los machos cabríos no puede quitar los pecados.

⁵ Por lo cual, entrando en el mundo, dice: sacrificio y presente no quisiste; Mas me apropiaste cuerpo:

⁶ Holocaustos y expiaciones por el pecado no te agradaron.

⁷ Entonces dije: Heme aquí (En la cabecera del libro está escrito de mí) Para que haga, oh Dios, tu voluntad.

⁸ Diciendo arriba: Sacrificio y presente, y holocaustos y expiaciones por el pecado no quisiste, ni te agradaron, (las cuales cosas se ofrecen según la ley,)

⁹ Entonces dijo: Heme aquí para que haga, oh Dios, tu voluntad. Quita lo primero, para establecer lo postrero.

¹⁰ En la cual voluntad somos santificados por la ofrenda del cuerpo de Jesucristo hecha una sola vez.

¹¹ Así que, todo sacerdote se presenta cada día ministrando y ofreciendo muchas veces los mismos sacrificios, que nunca pueden quitar los pecados:

¹² Pero éste, habiendo ofrecido por los pecados un solo sacrificio para siempre, está sentado á la diestra de Dios,

¹³ Esperando lo que resta, hasta que sus enemigos sean puestos por estrado de sus pies.

¹⁴ Porque con una sola ofrenda hizo perfectos para siempre á los santificados.

¹⁵ Y atestíguanos lo mismo el Espíritu Santo; que después que dijo:

¹⁶ Y este es el pacto que haré con ellos Después de aquellos días, dice el Señor: Daré mis leyes en sus corazones, Y en sus almas las escribiré:

¹⁷ Añade: Y nunca más me acordaré de sus pecados é iniquidades.

¹⁸ Pues donde hay remisión de éstos, no hay más ofrenda por pecado.

²⁶ Porque tal pontífice nos convenía: santo, inocente, limpio, apartado de los pecadores, y hecho más sublime de los cielos;

²⁷ Que no tiene necesidad cada día, como los otros sacerdotes, de ofrecer primero sacrificios por sus pecados, y luego por los del pueblo: porque esto lo hizo una sola vez, ofreciéndose á sí mismo.

²⁸ Porque la ley constituye sacerdotes á hombres flacos; mas la palabra del juramento, después de la ley, constituye al Hijo, hecho perfecto para siempre.

¹ ASI que, la suma acerca de lo dicho es: Tenemos tal pontífice que se asentó á la diestra del trono de la Majestad en los cielos;

² Ministro del santuario, y de aquel verdadero tabernáculo que el Señor asentó, y no hombre.

³⁰ Y les apercibió que no hablasen de él á ninguno.

³¹ Y comenzó á enseñarles, que convenía que el Hijo del hombre padeciese mucho, y ser reprobado de los ancianos, y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas, y ser muerto, y resucitar después de tres días.

³² Y claramente decía esta palabra. Entonces Pedro le tomó, y le comenzó á reprender.

³³ Y él, volviéndose y mirando á sus discípulos, riñó á Pedro, diciendo: Apártate de mí, Satanás; porque no sabes las cosas que son de Dios, sino las que son de los hombres.

³⁴ Y llamando á la gente con sus discípulos, les dijo: Cualquiera que quisiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese á sí mismo, y tome su cruz, y sígame.

⁹ Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entrare, será salvo; y entrará, y saldrá, y hallará pastos.

¹⁰ El ladrón no viene sino para hurtar, y matar, y destruir: yo he venido para que tengan vida, y para que la tengan en abundancia.

¹¹ Yo soy el buen pastor: el buen pastor su vida da por las ovejas.

¹² Mas el asalariado, y que no es el pastor, de quien no son propias las ovejas, ve al lobo que viene, y deja las ovejas, y huye, y el lobo las arrebata, y esparce las ovejas.

¹³ Así que, el asalariado, huye, porque es asalariado, y no tiene cuidado de las ovejas.

¹⁴ Yo soy el buen pastor; y conozco mis ovejas, y las mías me conocen.

¹⁵ Como el Padre me conoce, y yo conozco al Padre; y pongo mi vida por las ovejas.

¹⁶ También tengo otras ovejas que no son de este redil; aquéllas también me conviene traer, y oirán mi voz; y habrá un rebaño, y un pastor.

¹ EN aquellos días, como hubo gran gentío, y no tenían qué comer, Jesús llamó á sus discípulos, y les dijo:

² Tengo compasión de la multitud, porque ya hace tres días que están conmigo, y no tienen qué comer:

³ Y si los enviare en ayunas á sus casas, desmayarán en el camino; porque algunos de ellos han venido de lejos.

⁴ Y sus discípulos le respondieron: ¿De dónde podrá alguien hartar á estos de pan aquí en el desierto?

⁵ Y les pregunto: ¿Cuántos panes tenéis? Y ellos dijeron: Siete.

⁶ Entonces mandó á la multitud que se recostase en tierra; y tomando los siete panes, habiendo dado gracias, partió, y dió á sus discípulos que los pusiesen delante: y los pusieron delante á la multitud.

⁷ Tenían también unos pocos pececillos: y los bendijo, y mandó que también los pusiesen delante.

⁸ Y comieron, y se hartaron: y levantaron de los pedazos que habían sobrado, siete espuertas.

⁹ Y eran los que comieron, como cuatro mil: y los despidió.

¹⁰ Y luego entrando en el barco con sus discípulos, vino á las partes de Dalmanutha.

¹¹ Y vinieron los Fariseos, y comenzaron á altercar con él, pidiéndole señal del cielo, tentándole.

¹² Y gimiendo en su espíritu, dice: ¿Por qué pide señal esta generación? De cierto os digo que no se dará señal á esta generación.

¹³ Y dejándolos, volvió á entrar en el barco, y se fué de la otra parte.

¹⁴ Y se habían olvidado de tomar pan, y no tenían sino un pan consigo en el barco.

¹⁵ Y les mandó, diciendo: Mirad, guardaos de la levadura de los Fariseos, y de la levadura de Herodes.

¹⁶ Y altercaban los unos con los otros diciendo: Pan no tenemos.

¹⁷ Y como Jesús lo entendió, les dice: ¿Qué altercáis, porque no tenéis pan? ¿no consideráis ni entendéis? ¿aun tenéis endurecido vuestro corazón?

¹⁸ ¿Teniendo ojos no veis, y teniendo oídos no oís? ¿y no os acordáis?

¹⁹ Cuando partí los cinco panes entre cinco mil, ¿cuántas espuertas llenas de los pedazos alzasteis? Y ellos dijeron: Doce.

²⁰ Y cuando los siete panes entre cuatro mil, ¿cuántas espuertas llenas de los pedazos alzasteis? Y ellos dijeron: Siete.

²¹ Y les dijo: ¿Cómo aún no entendéis?

²² Y vino á Bethsaida; y le traen un ciego, y le ruegan que le tocase.

²³ Entonces, tomando la mano del ciego, le sacó fuera de la aldea; y escupiendo en sus ojos, y poniéndole las manos encima, le preguntó si veía algo.

²⁴ Y él mirando, dijo: Veo los hombres, pues veo que andan como árboles.

²⁵ Luego le puso otra vez las manos sobre sus ojos, y le hizo que mirase; y fué restablecido, y vió de lejos y claramente á todos.

²⁶ Y envióle á su casa, diciendo: No entres en la aldea, ni lo digas á nadie en la aldea.

²⁷ Y salió Jesús y sus discípulos por las aldeas de Cesarea de Filipo. Y en el camino preguntó á sus discípulos, diciéndoles: ¿Quién dicen los hombres que soy yo?

²⁸ Y ellos respondieron: Juan Bautista; y otros, Elías; y otros, Alguno de los profetas.

²⁹ Entonces él les dice: Y vosotros, ¿quién decís que soy yo? Y respondiendo Pedro, le dice: Tú eres el Cristo.

³⁰ Y les apercibió que no hablasen de él á ninguno.

³¹ Y comenzó á enseñarles, que convenía que el Hijo del hombre padeciese mucho, y ser reprobado de los ancianos, y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas, y ser muerto, y resucitar después de tres días.

³² Y claramente decía esta palabra. Entonces Pedro le tomó, y le comenzó á reprender.

³³ Y él, volviéndose y mirando á sus discípulos, riñó á Pedro, diciendo: Apártate de mí, Satanás; porque no sabes las cosas que son de Dios, sino las que son de los hombres.

³⁵ Porque el que quisiere salvar su vida, la perderá; y el que perdiere su vida por causa de mí y del evangelio, la salvará.

³⁶ Porque ¿qué aprovechará al hombre, si granjeare todo el mundo, y pierde su alma?

³⁷ ¿O qué recompensa dará el hombre por su alma?

³⁸ Porque el que se avergonzare de mí y de mis palabras en esta generación adulterina y pecadora, el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará también de él, cuando vendrá en la gloria de su Padre con los santos ángeles.
