¹ The memory of a just man is praised, and the Lord’s blessing is upon his head. Blessed is one who has found wisdom; a mortal who knows understanding. To import her is better than treasures of gold and silver. She is more valuable than precious stones; nothing of value equals her worth. Justice proceeds from her mouth; she bears law and mercy on her tongue. Therefore, my children, listen to me, for I speak weighty things. And blessed is the one who keeps my ways. For my goings out are the goings out of life, and favour is prepared from the Lord. Therefore I exhort you, and utter my voice to the children of humankind. Because I, Wisdom, have prepared counsel, knowledge and understanding. I have called on them. Counsel and sureness are mine; prudence is mine, strength is mine. I love those who are my friends, while those who seek me will find grace. You innocent, then, understand cunning; you untaught, take it to heart. Listen to me, for I will speak weighty things, and I will open right things from my lips. Because my throat will meditate truth; lying lips are abominable before me. All the words of my mouth are with justice, there is nothing crooked in them nor twisted. They are all straight for those who understand, and right for those who find knowledge. For I teach you what is true, that your hope may be in the Lord and that you may be filled with spirit.

¹ The mouth of a just man distils wisdom; the lips of men know graces. The mouth of the wise meditates wisdom; justice delivers them from death. When a just man dies hope is not lost; for a just son is born for life, and among his good things he will pluck the fruit of justice. There is light at all times for the just, and they will find grace and glory from the Lord. The tongue of the wise knows what is good, and wisdom will take its rest in their hearts. The Lord loves holy hearts; while all who are blameless in the way are acceptable to him. The wisdom of the Lord will enlighten the face of the understanding; for she anticipates those who desire her before they know it, and is easily contemplated by those who love her. One who rises for her at dawn will not toil, and one who keeps vigil because of her will be without care. For she goes about seeking those who are worthy of her, and shows herself favourably to those on her paths. Wickedness will never prevail against wisdom. Because of this I too became a lover of her beauty and became her friend, and I sought her out from my youth, and I sought to take her as my bride, because the Master of all things loved her, for she is an initiate of the knowledge of God and one who chooses his works. Her toils are virtues; she herself teaches sobriety and prudence; justice and courage, than which things nothing is more useful in human life. If anyone longs for much experience, she knows how to compare things of old and those that are to come. She knows the twists of words and the explanations of riddles. She foresees signs and wonders and the outcomes of seasons and times. And to all she is a good counsellor. Because immortality is in her, and fame in the fellowship of her words. Therefore I appealed to the Lord and besought him and said from my whole heart, ‘God of my Fathers and Lord of mercy, who made all things by your Word, and established humanity by your Wisdom to be sovereign over the creatures that had come into being by you, and to order the world in holiness and justice, give me Wisdom who sits by your throne, and do not reject me from among your children, for I am your servant and the son of your maid servant. Send her out from your holy dwelling and from the throne of your glory, that she may be present with me and teach me what is well pleasing before you. And she will guide me with knowledge and guard me with her glory. For all the thoughts of mortals are wretched and their ideas are unstable.’

¹ When a just man is praised, peoples will be glad; for immortality is his memory, because it is known both to God and humankind, and his soul is pleasing to the Lord. Therefore, O men, desire wisdom, and long for it and be instructed. For her beginning is love and keeping of laws. Honour Wisdom, that you may reign for ever. I will declare the mysteries of God to you and not hide them from you. Because he is both the guide of Wisdom and the One who sets right the wise. In his hand are all prudence, and knowledge of works. Wisdom, the artificer of all things, taught me, for in her is an understanding spirit, holy, brightness of the eternal light and image of the goodness of God. She makes friends of God and prophets. She is more lovely than the sun, and beyond every order of the stars. If compared to light, she is found before it. She delivered her devotees from toils, and guided them in straight paths. She gave them holy knowledge and protected them from those who lay in ambush for them. She awarded them a mighty contest, that all might know that true religion is more powerful than all, and that wickedness can never prevail against Wisdom, nor will justice in passing sentence overlook evil people. For they said in themselves, not reasoning correctly, ‘Let us overpower the just one, let us not spare his saintliness, nor feel reverence for the aged grey hairs of an elder. Let our strength be law. Let us lie in ambush for the just, for he is a hindrance to us and he is opposed to our works and alleges the sins of our upbringing. He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord. He has become a reproof to our thoughts. He is grievous for us even to look at, for his life is not like others and his paths are quite different. We are reckoned by him to be counterfeit, and he keeps away from our ways as from filth. He calls the end of just people blessed. Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen to him at the end. Let us examine him by insult and torture, that we may know his forbearance and make trial of his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for he will have protection from his own words.’ This was how they argued, and they were deceived, for their wickedness had blinded them. And they did not know the mysteries of God, nor did they judge that you alone are God, who have authority over life and death, who save in time of tribulation and deliver from every ill; pitying and merciful, giving grace to your holy ones, and by your right arm resisting the proud.

¹ DE cierto, de cierto os digo: El que no entra por la puerta en el corral de las ovejas, mas sube por otra parte, el tal es ladrón y robador.

² Mas el que entra por la puerta, el pastor de las ovejas es.

³ A éste abre el portero, y las ovejas oyen su voz: y á sus ovejas llama por nombre, y las saca.

⁴ Y como ha sacado fuera todas las propias, va delante de ellas; y las ovejas le siguen, porque conocen su voz.

⁵ Mas al extraño no seguirán, antes huirán de él: porque no conocen la voz de los extraños.

⁶ Esta parábola les dijo Jesús; mas ellos no entendieron qué era lo que les decía.

⁷ Volvióles, pues, Jesús á decir: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Yo soy la puerta de las ovejas.

⁸ Todos los que antes de mí vinieron, ladrones son y robadores; mas no los oyeron las ovejas.

⁹ Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entrare, será salvo; y entrará, y saldrá, y hallará pastos.

⁹ For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

¹⁰ Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

¹¹ Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

¹² And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

¹³ And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

²⁴ Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

²⁵ Brethren, pray for us.

²⁶ Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

²⁷ I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

²⁸ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

²⁶ Porque tal pontífice nos convenía: santo, inocente, limpio, apartado de los pecadores, y hecho más sublime de los cielos;

²⁷ Que no tiene necesidad cada día, como los otros sacerdotes, de ofrecer primero sacrificios por sus pecados, y luego por los del pueblo: porque esto lo hizo una sola vez, ofreciéndose á sí mismo.

²⁸ Porque la ley constituye sacerdotes á hombres flacos; mas la palabra del juramento, después de la ley, constituye al Hijo, hecho perfecto para siempre.

¹ ASI que, la suma acerca de lo dicho es: Tenemos tal pontífice que se asentó á la diestra del trono de la Majestad en los cielos;

² Ministro del santuario, y de aquel verdadero tabernáculo que el Señor asentó, y no hombre.

³¹ Aquel mismo día llegaron unos de los Fariseos, diciéndole: Sal, y vete de aquí, porque Herodes te quiere matar.

³² Y les dijo: Id, y decid á aquella zorra: He aquí, echo fuera demonios y acabo sanidades hoy y mañana, y al tercer día soy consumado.

³³ Empero es menester que hoy, y mañana, y pasado mañana camine; porque no es posible que profeta muera fuera de Jerusalem.

³⁴ ¡Jerusalem, Jerusalem! que matas á los profetas, y apedreas á los que son enviados á ti: ¡cuántas veces quise juntar tus hijos, como la gallina sus pollos debajo de sus alas, y no quisiste!

³⁵ He aquí, os es dejada vuestra casa desierta: y os digo que no me veréis hasta que venga tiempo cuando digáis: Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor.

⁹ Yo soy la puerta: el que por mí entrare, será salvo; y entrará, y saldrá, y hallará pastos.

¹⁰ El ladrón no viene sino para hurtar, y matar, y destruir: yo he venido para que tengan vida, y para que la tengan en abundancia.

¹¹ Yo soy el buen pastor: el buen pastor su vida da por las ovejas.

¹² Mas el asalariado, y que no es el pastor, de quien no son propias las ovejas, ve al lobo que viene, y deja las ovejas, y huye, y el lobo las arrebata, y esparce las ovejas.

¹³ Así que, el asalariado, huye, porque es asalariado, y no tiene cuidado de las ovejas.

¹⁴ Yo soy el buen pastor; y conozco mis ovejas, y las mías me conocen.

¹⁵ Como el Padre me conoce, y yo conozco al Padre; y pongo mi vida por las ovejas.

¹⁶ También tengo otras ovejas que no son de este redil; aquéllas también me conviene traer, y oirán mi voz; y habrá un rebaño, y un pastor.

¹ Y ACONTECIO que pasando él por los sembrados en un sábado segundo del primero, sus discípulos arrancaban espigas, y comían, restregándolas con las manos.

² Y algunos de los Fariseos les dijeron: ¿Por qué hacéis lo que no es lícito hacer en los sábados?

³ Y respondiendo Jesús les dijo: ¿Ni aun esto habéis leído, qué hizo David cuando tuvo hambre, él, y los que con él estaban;

⁴ Cómo entró en la casa de Dios, y tomó los panes de la proposición, y comió, y dió también á los que estaban con él, los cuales no era lícito comer, sino á solos los sacerdotes?

⁵ Y les decía. El Hijo del hombre es Señor aun del sábado.

⁶ Y aconteció también en otro sábado, que él entró en la sinagoga y enseñaba; y estaba allí un hombre que tenía la mano derecha seca.

⁷ Y le acechaban los escribas y los Fariseos, si sanaría en sábado, por hallar de qué le acusasen.

⁸ Mas él sabía los pensamientos de ellos; y dijo al hombre que tenía la mano seca: Levántate, y ponte en medio. Y él levantándose, se puso en pie.

⁹ Entonces Jesús les dice: Os preguntaré un cosa: ¿Es lícito en sábados hacer bien, ó hacer mal? ¿salvar la vida, ó quitarla?

¹⁰ Y mirándolos á todos alrededor, dice al hombre: Extiende tu mano. Y él lo hizo así, y su mano fué restaurada.

¹¹ Y ellos se llenaron de rabia; y hablaban los unos á los otros qué harían á Jesús.

¹² Y aconteció en aquellos días, que fué al monte á orar, y pasó la noche orando á Dios.

¹³ Y como fué de día, llamó á sus discípulos, y escogió doce de ellos, á los cuales también llamó apóstoles:

¹⁴ A Simón, al cual también llamó Pedro, y á Andrés su hermano, Jacobo y Juan, Felipe y Bartolomé,

¹⁵ Mateo y Tomás, Jacobo hijo de Alfeo, y Simón el que se llama Celador,

¹⁶ Judas hermano de Jacobo, y Judas Iscariote, que también fué el traidor.

¹⁷ Y descendió con ellos, y se paró en un lugar llano, y la compañía de sus discípulos, y una grande multitud de pueblo de toda Judea y de Jerusalem, y de la costa de Tiro y de Sidón, que habían venido á oirle, y para ser sanados de sus enfermedades;

¹⁸ Y los que habían sido atormentados de espíritus inmundos: y estaban curados.

¹⁹ Y toda la gente procuraba tocarle; porque salía de él virtud, y sanaba á todos.

²⁰ Y alzando él los ojos á sus discípulos, decía: Bienaventurados vosotros los pobres; porque vuestro es el reino de Dios.

²¹ Bienaventurados los que ahora tenéis hambre; porque seréis saciados. Bienaventurados los que ahora lloráis, porque reiréis.

²² Bienaventurados seréis, cuando los hombres os aborrecieren, y cuando os apartaren de sí, y os denostaren, y desecharen vuestro nombre como malo, por el Hijo del hombre.

²³ Gozaos en aquel día, y alegraos; porque he aquí vuestro galardón es grande en los cielos; porque así hacían sus padres á los profetas.

²⁴ Mas ¡ay de vosotros, ricos! porque tenéis vuestro consuelo.

²⁵ ¡Ay de vosotros, los que estáis hartos! porque tendréis hambre. ¡Ay de vosotros, los que ahora reís! porque lamentaréis y lloraréis.

²⁶ ¡Ay de vosotros, cuando todos los hombres dijeren bien de vosotros! porque así hacían sus padres á los falsos profetas.

²⁷ Mas á vosotros los que oís, digo: Amad á vuestros enemigos, haced bien á los que os aborrecen;

²⁸ Bendecid á los que os maldicen, y orad por los que os calumnian.

²⁹ Y al que te hiriere en la mejilla, dale también la otra; y al que te quitare la capa, ni aun el sayo le defiendas.

³⁰ Y á cualquiera que te pidiere, da; y al que tomare lo que es tuyo, no vuelvas á pedir.

³¹ Y como queréis que os hagan los hombres, así hacedles también vosotros:

³² Porque si amáis á los que os aman, ¿qué gracias tendréis? porque también los pecadores aman á los que los aman.

³³ Y si hiciereis bien á los que os hacen bien, ¿qué gracias tendréis? porque también los pecadores hacen lo mismo.

³⁴ Y si prestareis á aquellos de quienes esperáis recibir, ¿qué gracias tendréis? porque también los pecadores prestan á los pecadores, para recibir otro tanto.

³⁵ Amad, pués, á vuestros enemigos, y haced bien, y prestad, no esperando de ello nada; y será vuestro galardón grande, y seréis hijos del Altísimo: porque él es benigno para con los ingratos y malos.

³⁶ Sed pues misericordiosos, como también vuestro Padre es misericordioso.

³⁷ No juzguéis, y no seréis juzgados: no condenéis, y no seréis condenados: perdonad, y seréis perdonados.

³⁸ Dad, y se os dará; medida buena, apretada, remecida, y rebosando darán en vuestro seno: porque con la misma medida que midiereis, os será vuelto á medir.

³⁹ Y les decía una parábola: ¿Puede el ciego guiar al ciego? ¿No caerán ambos en el hoyo?

⁴⁰ El discípulo no es sobre su maestro; mas cualquiera que fuere como el maestro, será perfecto.

⁴¹ ¿Por qué miras la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano, y la viga que está en tu propio ojo no consideras?

⁴² ¿O cómo puedes decir á tu hermano: Hermano, deja, echaré fuera la paja que está en tu ojo, no mirando tú la viga, que está en tu ojo? Hipócrita, echa primero fuera de tu ojo la viga, y entonces verás bien para sacar la paja que está en el ojo de tu hermano.

⁴³ Porque no es buen árbol el que da malos frutos; ni árbol malo el que da buen fruto.

⁴⁴ Porque cada árbol por su fruto es conocido: que no cogen higos de los espinos, ni vendimian uvas de las zarzas.

⁴⁵ El buen hombre del buen tesoro de su corazón saca bien; y el mal hombre del mal tesoro de su corazón saca mal; porque de la abundancia del corazón habla su boca.

⁴⁶ ¿Por qué me llamáis, Señor, Señor, y no hacéis lo que digo?

⁴⁷ Todo aquel que viene á mí, y oye mis palabras, y las hace, os enseñaré á quién es semejante:

⁴⁸ Semejante es al hombre que edifica una casa, el cual cavó y ahondó, y puso el fundamento sobre la peña; y cuando vino una avenida, el río dió con ímpetu en aquella casa, mas no la pudo menear: porque estaba fundada sobre la peña.

⁴⁹ Mas el que oyó y no hizo, semejante es al hombre que edificó su casa sobre tierra, sin fundamento; en la cual el río dió con ímpetu, y luego cayó; y fué grande la ruina de aquella casa.
